The old Man Utd Thread

Where the fuck have those type of performances been this season? Okay, we conceded possession, but, apart from Fellaini, I though we played really well.

Might even fluke it in the Allianz. Unlikely, but we've given ourselves a great chance.

Seeing us set up with 2 banks of 5 was utterly, utterly depressing. But in fairness it has worked. The main negative is Fellaini. He provides nothing. Can't pass, can't tackle, can't hold on to the ball, can't run and worst of all can't head the ball! I thought that was one of his main attributes?! He just doesn't attack the ball even when going up against someone who is at least half a foot smaller than him (Alaba). When he does get on the end of it it could go anywhere.

But as good a result as we could have hoped. What's the chances of a result at the Allianz? :/

That was surreal. I thought we were going to get battered, but we had a number of clear chances and ultimately, though they had a lot of the ball, Bayern were pretty toothless by their standards. Plus they'll be missing Schweini and Martinez for the return. The main thing counting against us is that we'll have to score.

Wow, Valencia should have been off and Rooney dived to get Schwein off. Football ey. Fellani played better than he has but this Man U team are so depressing

See my post above. I don't get what you're seeing, at all. Care to explain?

Arsenal and Liverpool (not so much) fans will be shitting themselves for a little while longer.

I really hope United go through, Moyes deserves some luck.

He doesn't deserve luck, he deserves a few plaudits (me included) for actually bringing some decent tactics tonight.

He lost the ball and recklessly dived in out of pure frustration, getting no where near it maybe?

Maybe watch it again. There was nothing reckless about it. And, as I said above, he probably bore the brunt. He just isn't the type to whinge.

Chiles, who knows about as much about footy as my mum. Keane, who relishes the opportunity to be negative about us at every chance he gets. And numpty, who probably doesn't realise he isn't watching Eastenders.

Decent enough performance and result. I do think the weakness in Bayern's defence helped a lot. Never before have I seen Welbeck physically trouble CB's as much as he did tonight. There is still shit loads of work that needs done to the team but still in with a fair chance after the first leg is a lot more than most of us would have been expecting.

@ Jon, I didn't think it was a red for Valencia either. The Bayern player was sliding on his arse for about 5 yards before even getting near the ball. I thought it was a bit of decent refereeing from a European ref for once. Rooney definitely dived though.

Vidic's header was absolutely beautiful. Fellaini was just...ugh aside from a couple of decent tackles shouldn't be playing. Was he at fault for their goal as well? He seemed vaguley like he shoulda been tracking the striker back, he was definitely in the frame.

I think we can all agree that Fellaini is looking like a spectacular failure. It's nothing to be ashamed of really, as we've had many if those before who've gone on to better things. But, as Moyes' first signing, and a panic one at that, it doesn't look particularly good.

Martinez should have seen red when he brought Hernandez down surely. High up the pitch but e was trough in on goal with nobody likely to get near him.

This is Hernandez we're talking about. He'd have knocked it to Neuer with his first touch or fell over the ball or something.

i actually think Hernandez fell over on his own - lost his feet with no contact by the defender. as for the other decisions, in my opinion Valencia's one was not a sending off, it was a 50-50 ball there to be won, bith players went in one-footed, with toes rather than studs. it's a football challenge. i can see how these days some people might see it as a sending off - 50-50s have gone out of the game a bit. Schweinsteiger was unlucky, as there wasn't a lot of contact and Rooney was looking for a foul in that position to take the pressure off his defence. the ref saw it as him sliding in and taking out a player that was breaking, which is sort of true, but he should have shown some common sense and seen that Rooney had already lost the ball anyway. he stayed down when he wasn't injured - i don't like that. it was exactly the same thing that Lahm did in the first half to get Valencia booked though.

the decision that irritates me was Welbeck's disallowed goal. there was nothing wrong with it at all. Welbeck played ok generally, but it's his miss that was his most telling contribution. you can forgive a player missing a chance when trying to do the right thing, but a stupid dinky chip when the keeper hasn't even gone down? idiot.

Only got the first half because I booked a flight before I knew when we were playing.. but great result. Glad Giggs came off at half-time, Kagawa was needed to keep a little more possession (did we get any?). A gif of our goal shows Neuer pushing Welbeck out and not concentrating on the ball - if that hadn't gone in I'd be wondering if we got a penalty. Great to be in it, bring on the Allianz!

Eh? Neither two footed, a lunge or any intent. Why do you think he should have gone? It was a 50/50 ball that they both went for. If anything Tony had it worse, he got crunched in the balls.

I just said he was lucky not to be sent off, European ref and all, not that I thought it was a 2nd yellow. Yeah he had both feet off the floor, but he didn't go in studs up or anything.

I think the Valencia challenge definitely looks like a yellow on the replay but from the referees angle, and in realtime, it just looks like two players sliding in for the ball.

Quite amusing to see Bayern (or any team really) complaining about diving when all of them are at it. I think the yellow was harsh but that is the referees fault not Rooney's. Any Bayern player would have gone down in the same position.

Overall it seems quite refreshing to go into the second leg with some kind of chance, I don't think anybody would have predicted that.

Well, it's Rooney's fault as well if he did dive. Bayern are a pretty dirty team though so I can't say I'm too fussed.

Also, apparently Fellaini was the second most expensive player on the pitch last night. He looked terrible.
