The old Man Utd Thread

you can't fault him for the way he made that comeback happen though. at the end we had RVP, Rooney, Hernandez, Kagawa, Januzaj and Valencia all on the pitch. he went for it with the substitutions and we turned it around, with the winner scored by one of the subs. Moyes deserves some credit again. i think he seems to be groping his way gradually towards a decent line-up, as well. give the man time.

A couple of observations:

We need to stop playing centre-backs at right-back. I can't think of any top team that does this, and yesterday showed exactly why. Rafael wouldn't have been outpaced like Smalling was for their first goal, and considering how well organised and compact Stoke were in the final third, we desperately missed Rafael's overlapping runs to get in behind them and open them up. This is such a basic feature of the game now (opening up highly organised defences with overlapping fullbacks), and one Moyes himself should understand better than most from his Everton team.

Cleverley's performance (0 tackles, 0 interceptions) highlighted yet again the urgent need to spend in January. The best teams all focus on winning the ball back further up the pitch to instigate quick counter-attacks, but our midfield isn't cut out for this. Carrick needs someone ultra-mobile and aggressive to partner him and fulfil that role. Herrera looks like he could be that kind of player, so it's essential that we go back in for him in January with a serious bid, or else target someone similar.

Jon, why do you care about negs? Respect lost... Typical united fans always just disappoint me.

I just love the thought of some sad, socially awkward geek getting himself worked into a frenzy because I dared to disregard some bullshit rule about not speaking of negs.

Get this. As long as this place has the feature I'll continue to talk about them.

Bringing on Valencia changed the game, though Hernandez and Januzaj also had an impact. Who knows, maybe Nani would've done better if he'd been supported by a proper attacking fullback from the off. I was heartened by Moyes' positive substitutions, given that Everton fans have criticised his caution during games in the past. I guess he had to take a gamble though!

It's annoying that one Tom Cleverley, who has been out of form for the longest time, still looks like our best option to partner Carrick. He is unlikely to win us the ball back or make decisive contributions in attack, but at least he is very mobile and energetic, can carry the ball forward well and is a decent passer. I might prefer it if we had a more complete player as an option, but I think the qualities he does have make him a good foil for Carrick, and despite being 24 he's still learning the game. I don't see us being able to get someone decent in January either.

really? really? Cleverley? Sorry Liam but he was awful. i was almost disgusted by the fact he made no tackles. at 24 he's had plenty of time to "learn the game" he's simply not good enough. All he has is his ability to run. It's as though we (as England) have learned NOTHING sicne the 80's when skill was shunned as a necessity in favour of stupid twats that can run around like headless chickens. for a supposed future centerpiece of our national team and arguably biggest club team in England, the situation is a bit of a joke.

Personally i'm surprised we didn't see Felani start the match for his physical presence - although saying that, he probably would have got sent off.

Do I think Moyes is the right man for the job? Definitely not, if you think about what his teams are like they are well organised and hard to beat which is the last thing we should have been looking for in a manager, but he's the one we have and I can't think of any other alternatives we could have got (any ideas?).

Mourinho was crying out for the job. All his sucking up to Ferguson over the years, he was priming himself for it. I also suspect Guardiola would have been up for it had Ferguson told him about his retirement plans. Maybe Klopp could have been prised away? Any number of managers would have wanted this job. Instead we went for Moyes. Still amazes me.

He's not good enough but he's the least not good enough player we have. Fellaini has more quality but him and Carrick together doesn't really work, there's no-one to drive forward and connect the play.

its far too early to say that carrick and fellani doesnt work. Well, from what we've seen it hasnt been great, but they both have the quality.

Fletch is back in training and completed 60 minutes of a reserved match yesterday! Sounds like he's still a way off being anywhere near the first team though.

It's not like you couldn't have predicted they'd play like that together though. The problem we've had for years is getting overrun in midfield, we didn't need another slow player. That said if Carrick ever gets injured or loses form we'll be very glad to have signed him.

Januzaj is finding so much space in this free role, and is really tying things together nicely. As much as I'd love to see Kagawa given more opportunities, I'd be hard pressed to say the teenager hasn't done more to earn himself the time on the pitch.

Hope Snodgrass is ok. Januzaj looking good tonight in that number 10 role. Freedom of the park it seems for him. Zaha playing well on the right too. Young has been pretty crap all night, over hit pretty much every cross he's put into the box.
