The old Man Utd Thread

What. Surely moving inside creates space for him to overlap?

Anyway, Anderson on for Scholes who has been good. Clearly no a tactical sub, just more energy on the pitch now.

Giggs is playing more as a third central midfielder (although he seems to be playing a bit wider since Anderson came on) meaning ever time Fabio gets the ball he has to stop, check back and pass back to the middle.

Glad those boring shit heads have been knocked out. Rangers are pathetic lining up like that when they need a win, doubly so when drawing results in the exact same outcome (elimination) as losing. I can half understand doing that in the away game seeing as it was the first, but at this late a stage when they need a result?

I'm sure the stock response will be they have no money, but look at some of the teams that have taken points of United this season. Aren't Rangers supposedly bigger than Fulham or WBA? Tell you something I bet you anything Blackpool try and win the game next week.

Walter Smith at the end was a joker too, as where the pundits. Rangers deserve credit apparently, fuck knows why according to them. Smith reckons because a kick to the face and chest isn't deliberate then all is cool.

Not in the slightest. Fulham for a start will have far more cash coming in and available to them than Rangers. Vast amounts more.

The only thing saving Naismith was that it wasn't a malicious challenge as he had no idea that Fab was running in behind him.

Stonewall penalty though.

Clueless, ignorant bastard.

It was hard work having to watch the game with the STV commentary and pundits. There's optimistic and then there's delusional, and they set out their delusional stall from the start.

Still, a sickening result for the home team is always welcome, if only to see the absurd TV people discuss whether a direct kick to the face is a foul.

The quickest of Googles suggest otherwise.

Rangers FC 2008 Turnover was 65M, making a small profit.

Fulham FC's turnover in the same period was 52M. They lost 7.5M

Edit- Latest 2010 figures, from Rangers site:

Turnover of £56.3m (2009 - £39.7m), an increase of £16.6m or 41.8%

Clueless, ignorant bastard.

Scunthorpe put up a much, much better fight than Rangers.

United fielded a hugely inexperienced back 4. A draw sees Rangers go out. A loss sees Rangers finish third. The point of playing for a draw in last nights game is?

You can understand it in the first half because they wouldn't have known Valencia were beating Bursaspor but after half time when it was 100% clear that 3rd place had been secured it was a completely pointless exercise to play so defensively when anything other than a win resulted in the same outcome.

If we were to open up we would have been horsed. You guys didn't see our home matches against Bursaspor or Valencia. On paper, defensive as fuck. In practice, however, the five at the back could adjust into a really wide midfield which offered pretty dynamic and effective counter attacking. We simply missed a couple of our key attack-minded defenders last night in Papac and Bougherra. With those guys playing we would have had a chance. We'd certainly have offered more of a counter attacking threat. As it is, though, our squad is paper thin, and instead of those guys playing, we had to go with Ricky Foster, a loan player from fucking ABERDEEN, and Steven Davis at right back. Steven Davis being our most creative midfielder. So that was that area of the pitch fucked as well. We also missed Edu in there, who has been a pretty influential player for us in this campaign. We simply don't have the depth in squad required to compete at this level, and that's precisely down to our fucking huge debt of late. Yes, we've had impressive turnover and profits latterly, but that's what you get when you're forced into not spending a dime on players (apart from Jelavic, an expensive striker who is both cup-tied and injured!).

That's all big picture stuff though isn't it? The smaller picture was that you had absolutely nothing to lose by going for a win once it was clear Valencia were going to beat Bursaspor.

If you'd have beaten us we would have had to go for the win against Valencia and you would have gone through if you beat Bursaspor.

Go for the win = opening up and getting horsed. Walter decided he wanted to stick with a more counter attacking approach which, with better passing and hold up play from Miller might have come off. We created arguably the best chance of the match in the first half when Van Der Sar saved from Miller at his near post, when a cutback would have been the better option. I think Walter played it absolutely right with what he had at his disposal. As I said earlier, it was a pretty effective approach against Valencia. Fair enough, that match ended in a draw, but you should have seen the sitters we were missing. Positively Rooney-esque.

Edit - the one decision by Walter that I disagreed with was the substitution of Weiss who was looking lively and entertaining. He ripped the pish out of a fair few United players at times.

The way United are playing at the moment i'm not convinced you'd have got horsed but yeah, going all cavalier was unlikely to result in anything but a loss. It would just be nice that when give a chance to attack without anything at stake they might have taken it. After all, the defense had already given you a few chances and if the game opened up slightly they would have been left even more exposed.
