The old Man Utd Thread

You can't really blame them for doing the best with what they've got and fair play to them they got a point.

Not really bothered about the result though to be honest, just hope Valencia isn't out for the whole season :(

Funny thing is as long as Nani stays fit the right wing position isn't really an issue, but who is going to step up on the left? Park was pretty poor and has never been an out and out winger. That only leaves Giggs. Slightly concerning really.

Bebe to save our season!

Newcastle also went home with nothing to show for it. I'm not saying it's the kind of match I like to see as a neutral, particularly with a midfield as bereft of creativity as United's was tonight, but they've gone to a difficult away venue and come away with a clean sheet and a point to show for it.

Add another reason to the list of why Celtic and Rangers shouldn't be allowed in the Premier league, their boring as fuck and happy to just stick 9 men behind the ball for 90 mins. Newcastle gave us more of a game than them.

If you steamrolled them 6-0 that would be another reason not to allow them.

Well... This could take some time. But Newcastle have access to money that the old firm can only dream about.

Man U looked pretty tame tonight, sorry Uers, Chelsea would have steamrollerd Rangers, United need some muscle in the midfield.

I don't like this excuse, reminds me too much of Arsenal's moaning over past years. The problem is that when Scholes doesn't play we don't have a playmaker. I would have actually put Giggs in the middle, he's played well in central midfield loads of times and looked the most likely to conjure something up apart from a Gibson shot (the only reason he ever really seems to be on the pitch).

So, we're joint second in the group now, I think. Obviously the result is a little disappointing, but I think it's acceptable. It just means the points from here out are more valuable, so playing a stronger starting XI is probably a must. Our play was a little one-dimensional, we were begging for a big of magic from the likes of Scholes. Having said that, if he played today he probably would have to be left out against Liverpool.

We'll be lucky to have Valencia back this season if it's as bad as it looks. Nani and Park are now our main wingers, so unless someone like Obertan really steps up, we look quite thin. You have to hope, looking to seasons ahead, that he comes back the same player.

He'd presumably have to go on the left to accomodate Berbatov anyway who has been in much better form so far this season. You could play Berbatov wide but not convinced about that. The other option is to play Anderson as a wide midfielder, not that it's ever really worked in the past.

What did dizogg say/where?

Must have missed it.

Shitty luck for Valencia, the commentators said it might be the pitch? Rooney went over on his ankle too.

We're really going to miss him this season, he ended up being one of our best players last year. :(

Fergie made the 10 changes knowing how Rangers would defend. He was ready to send a messge out to the team ghat playedbon Saturday and was ready to drop points as a result.

Not ideall but not the end of the world. Credit to Rangers, you can defend like that for 90 mins and it only takes a single mistake and it's all rendered fruitless , so respect to them for completing their objective

I agree that no-one should be criticising Rangers tonight. They accomplished what they set out to do very professionally and effectively. It certainly wasn't a horrendous disaster of a night but definately extremely frustrating to watch. Here's hoping Valencia has a swift recovery.

Anderson? He's a defensive/central midfielder. I might have him as an emergency left back but that's about it. Oh, and the idea of Berbatov ambling up and down the wing doesn't really appeal to me. I love the guy, but watching that would be torture.

We've got O'Shea and the reserves for left back cover, De Laet if he has to. Anderson I've got down as a central and attacking mid, doesn't seem the defensive type, more into pushing up the field a la Scholes.

I agree with AlwaysBeClosing. We bought Anderson from Porto when he played most of his games from the left or dropping off the front line. He has also played most of his games for Brazil in the second striker role.

He has been playing deeper for Utd because I think Fergie is trying to build up that side of his game, ready to unleash the attacking force of Ando...Well here's hoping anyway.

Hopefully Ferguson is wrong but all the quotes from him this morning are suggesting that Valencia will likely be out for the rest of the season. We better pray Nani stays fit or we are proper fucked out wide. Lets hope someone steps up to the plate!

Are Cleverly and Welbeck both on season long loans or is there an option to bring them back in January?

If he has indeed broken his leg and dislocated his ankle then it is probably a long road back sadly. The potential complications of an injury in that area can be seen in the rehabilitation time (and success) of, say, Eduardo, compared to Marcin Wasilewski (out Sep-May), or Aaron Ramsey (out Feb-Nov, touch wood), who both broke their legs higher up and thus didn't have complications with the ankle joint.

Not saying Valencia's leg is quite as fucked as Eduardo's was -- it almost certainly isn't, so fingers crossed he'll come back 100% unlike poor Dudu. But I'd be gobsmacked if he played again this season.

Season long for both I think unfortunately.

Bebe is a winger too.

I would say Bebe is a really long shot for playing in the first time in the near future. I had read somewhere that Cleverly can be recalled in January though so I suppose that's an option

Doesn't have to be in the near future, Valencia is out till next season, just mentioning Bebe because I don't think he was mentioned when people were talking up wide alternatives. He's in the squad(s) 'till January so is expected to play some part.

I'm really curious to see him play.

I am pretty interested to see him play as well, there must be something about him for Quieroz to bring him to our attention and for so many clubs to have been (allegedly) circling.

I've managed to convince my other half that Bebe isn't allowed to take set pieces a few times now. Each time she asks why and I reply with the classic joke 'because no one puts Bebe in the corner'. She falls for it every time
