If we bring in any more players I would prefer a deep lying midfielder to essentially replace Hargreaves.

To go all Football Manager, I'd love to see Rodwell play for us at some point in the future

Aye. At the start of the summer, all I said I wanted was for us to get him, and maybe Silva. I wouldn't say it's been dissapointing though, Chicharito looks really great, and we've got plenty of cover in youth. Our squad is one of the best around regardless really.

When you look at some of the players who didn't even make the bench yesterday (through injury - Anderson, Hargreaves, Rio, Obertan and then left out - Owen, Fabio, Cleverly, Gibson, Brown, Neville) we've got a massive squad to cope with the season ahead. If we bring in any more players I would prefer a deep lying midfielder to essentially replace Hargreaves.

Its not just a case of coping for this season though, signing a creative midfielder, Ozil or someone else is pretty important to securing the long term centre of the team when Giggs and Scholes retire.

Now is the time to be doing that.

Well, I kind of agree but I just don't think he fits in our setup as it stands now. Given the choice I would prefer to see Van de Vaart and he could well be surplus to requirements at Madrid now.

Newcastle are screwed if they have to resort to playing Nolan up front. Anyway was a good laugh when the whole of OT started chanting "Shearer took you down".

I'm a newcastle fan and eve I lauged at that :)

Was a shoddy performace from us. We should have gone 1 up in the first but were beaten by the much, much better side. I know this is the Man UTD thread, but for what it's worth, I think newcastle will struggle to stay up.

I'd have liked to have signed him this season to be honest. He's going to be some player in the future as he's quality now. Shocked he wasn't in the England squad this time round, exactly the kind of player England should be looking to for the future.

Hopefully we'll grab him next summer!

Anyone seen the Press Conference yesterday? Fergie said that he hasn't even seen DVD's of the new lad Bebé which came as quite a surprise! Basically went on the advice of Carlos Queiroz and scouts based in Portugal.

He probably wouldn't have got that much first team football if he moved this summer so it's probably better that he stays at Everton although he could have been loaned back to them.

Does seem a bit strange but Bebe's club said 4 clubs had bid for him I think so we obviously had to move quickly. Only minor concern is that the last player Queiroz recommended we buy (and we bought them) was Manucho  The one advantage of having Queiroz on your side is that if any player asks him for advice on which club to go to he's unlikely to say Real Madrid!

I just read about Arsenal's fanshare initiative, and I thought it drew interesting parallels with the long-term objectives of MUST; fan ownership and therefore influence over the long-term direction of the club. Like MUST, the fanshare acts as a not for profit holding company, which buys shares on behalf of the fans who aren't minted. Like MUST, it is an independent organisation from the club, though in Arsenal's case the relationship is obviously a lot cosier. Obviously the comparisons stop there; that vision of MUST is only an idea at the moment, though you can already make deposits. Envy doesn't quite cover it.

Hopefully the idea will spread, though I doubt any Premier League clubs will be entirely fan-owned in my lifetime. Certainly not Manchester United. If the 'Red Knights' do take over, I will be looking to see if they let MUST buy any shares, however nominal.

Van Der Vaart is up for sale, and this is what he has to say about it;

"I could never play for another club in Spain and the truth is that if you are leaving Real Madrid, there is only one club you can join that is not a step down – and that's Manchester United."

That's the spirit. :P Of course, he's just sucking up, I'm sure he isn't set on joining us really. The sort of sounds you want to hear though, if you have an excellent-dutch-playmaker sized hole in your squad. I hope we put a bid in, maybe start at £14m and see what Madrid think of that.

He's a gifted player but its not the type of player Fergie as every really had. Usually our most attacking midfield player in a 3 man midfield (no way would he be played in a 4-4-2 I don't think) is one that can get about the pitch and hussle and hassle the opposition. Van Der Vaart would not be up to that job I don't think.

I'd want him for less than £14m too, Real payed less than that when they signed did they not?

I'd have thought VDV and the others they want to ditch (both Diarra's and Gago) should be in the region 8-10 million. In which case I guess Van Der Vaart might be worth a punt but I can't see it happening really.

Oh, you're right, he was way less. £8-10m it is then. They want to reduce their wage bill mostly I imagine, so they should take a lowish offer. I quite rate Lassana Diarra too. If either of them are going cheap why not?

I like Lass Diarra too as a player, £10M for him would be a good price for a player who's both useful with and without the ball. More so with Hargreaves seemingly no where near first team football :(

He just knows which top clubs don't already have midfields packed with decent players.

Hes decent, and would fit in, but hard to get too excited about.

Sniejder > Ozil > ??? > Van Der Vaart

Chaps.

My mate wants to go up for the Liverpool game. Only problem is we dont have tickets. He has been up quite a few times and is confident that we will get one from a tout but I wanted to ask in here to see how likely the OT regulards think that is for this particular game. I just don't see it happnening but I am coming from a relatively naive standpoint I suppose.

We'd be kipping over at a friends so the only costs would be petrol and the ineviable £50 (guess) for a ticket near kick off?

£50 for a Liverpool ticket from a tout? Are you kidding? It was £48 for a ticket to last weeks match when they were on general sale. You could always register and try on viagogo I suppose but yeah expect more than 50
