The old Man Utd Thread

Evans and Smalling did look fantastic. Smalling's tackle was just enthusiasm, he knew he wasn't going to get sent off so why not throw himself into a stupid challenge. He won't do it in a real game. He seemed fast, which neither Evans or Vidic really are so he's an excellent option to play with them. For me, Rio needs to spend a bit of time out, his body needs to rebuild or he'll just have niggle after niggle. Still would be lovely to see Rio and Vida in top form together at some point, they're both still in the middle of their careers.

I genuinely think we only need one player this summer; a central/defensive midfielder. Rodwell would've been perfect, but he's out of the picture now. I thought we would've at least put a bid in for Silva given the attention we've showed him previously, but I guess things must really be that tight. He's well worth £25m, and even if all we did was push up City's bid, that'd still be something. Cole would've been a risk, and for some reason I'm quite certain he'll bomb at Liverpool. Hernandez isn't a bad addition at all though, if that's all we get.

I'm much more excited about Cleverley than Gibson too, who has disguised his limitations with some stunning long-range efforts. He is not a very good playmaker, and we don't need a midfielder with a great shot, but who can't make opportunities for others. Cleverley has proven himself to be quite a well-rounded young footballer at Watford. Corry Evans is also a player who I feel could shore up our midfield. He is apparently impressing for the reserves in a deep role, though I'll admit it's probably too early for him yet.

So did anyone watch the last 2 games. Thought we were dire in both matches especially defensively, Fabio played against Philidephia and was awful and Raf against Kansas was constantly caught out of posistion and I haven't been too impressed by Smalling yet. I'm just glad that Vidic is going to sign a new contract. As for positives Obertan has been good apart from his final ball and Cleverly looks a better bet than Gibson, but for me the best of the youngsters has been Wellbeck. Hopefully he can get a loan to a premiership team and get some regular first team football.

Yeah, they were pretty balls in the last two matches, with a couple of exceptions. Was hoping Nani would pick up where he left off despite just getting back from injury.

Despite Hernadez probably getting some game time tomorrow, I think a 1:30 am kick off is a bit beyond me. Highlights me-do.

Was surprised about Vidic to be honest, I was sure he was on the way out. Could it have been a contract ploy all along? Good news though, we're going to need an experienced central defender with Rio looking to be patchy for the rest of his career.

Yeah, I always doubted this stuff came from Vidic's camp. No doubt though, once the stories started circulating, his agent told him to shut up. Contradicting them wouldn't help his position at the negotiating table.

2-0 down now. An amazing shot just now, just on the edge of the box and under a bit of pressure, but bangs it into the top corner. We look out of it, but it's good experience for the lads. We really benefit from these runs in the Milk Cup every year.

Anyone watching tonight? I'm in the casino watching as my laptops in the repair shop.

Macheda scored after 23 seconds, comedy defending let him pinch the ball and slot into a virtually open net.

I'm watching (as an MLS fan). The selection process for the MLS players is a bit of a joke. How is Kevin Alston in the team? He'd be the player who gave the ball to Macheda. It's a bit of a swizz, as these players hardly know each other, never mind having played together. They get about 3 days playing together and a handful of them played a competitve game last night. Still, it's a lark and this will be the first time MLS All Stars have actually lost.

Really enjoyed that well worth staying up for, some great goals. Scoreline was harsh but the damage was done early. Surprised that I liked the american commentary, what they lacked in knowledge (described Scholes as a defensive midfielder and said he was known for his interceptions) they made up for in excitement and their phrasing "Pass Denied". Super Exited to see what Hernandez can do this season.

No goal for Welbeck, but he was undeniably impressive. Looks a lot stronger than last season, his runs are less loping now and very direct. His awareness and vision seems to have come on too, though an all-stars game probably isn't the best test of that as he got a lot of time and space on the ball. Good signs all around though, particularly from Cleverley as well. I hope he can prove to be adept at playing further back, and gradually learn how to run a game. Gibson once again shows us what a tremendous striker of the ball he is, but I'm not convinced he's all that when it comes to typical midfield dogwork. Chicarito is bloody fast and plays right on the line, and will doubtless be very exciting for us. Macheda is physically very imposing indeed, and yet quick and skillful. He will be a real handful for defenders, the main issue with him in the long term clearly won't be any problems with his development, but interest from other teams.

I didn't see anything of Obertan really, must've tuned in too late. Not much to shout about defensively, if I was to think of a negative, but I guess young defenders are likely to switch off in friendlies. They've got plenty of time to sort themselves out. I'm not scared about Rio's long absence, we should either have him back fully fit and refreshed or not at all.
