The old Man Utd Thread

Because that's when he was actually for sale, for less money, from a club that we were selling Ronaldo to for £crazy.

12 months ago we might have had different ideas and different targets. Just because we didn't bid for him 12 months ago doesn't mean we don't want him now. Going by the sound of reports and that the player has come out and committed his future to Inter suggests that maybe we actually was interested.

We were obviously interested, we probably made a concrete bid too. But should have made it last year. It's not like everyone has suddenly realized how great he is, there was lots of talk in here last summer about getting him and Robben. I'm guessing we make a fair amount of firm bids which get rejected from time to time for whatever reason.

Fergie is obviously getting desperate as he knows we don't have a decent creative midfielder & playmaking force anymore, and as such was willing to push the boat out. I'm assuming there will be other targets to fill that position. They were probably realistic about the circumstances of the bid, and that United isn't going to be a massive draw after winning the treble in a country you like living in, but at least we know they are trying to spend some of the Ronaldo money on decent players... although money going out is still money going out at this stage.

Apparently his previous deal at in was £3 million a year anyway, so we would have had to better that also.

So Christiano Ronaldo has named his son... Christiano Ronaldo.

:(

Someone was telling me his 'son' was born by a surrogate mother he's never met or something? A hint of Michael Jackson about it anyway.

Jesus. Rodwell has a new contract nailed down at Everton, right? If we fancy throwing a lot of money at the problem, we could try and get the Schwein. Our midfield was so weak last season without Anderson and Hargreaves though, we need someone new in over the summer or next season will be very difficult.

I just made this post in the football thread, but really it was a bit much for that thread. So here it is instead. Right, so how do we expect to like up next season? I'd personally go for something along the lines of

             Rooney

     Hernandez        Nani

            Anderson

       Fletcher   Scholes

Evra                       Rafael

        Vidic  Evans/Rio

              VDS

For me Giggs could also take up that role where I've put Anderson, or Park. However, Fletch is the only ideal central/defensive midfielder we have, with Hargreaves dead and Carrick going missing. Scholes is a genius, but in that formation he may force Anderson to help out too much with the defending; only an issue in games where defending is crucial but still. That is where we are most weak, before the summer is out we need another dependable player who can play 30-40 games in the middle, making tackles and passes and providing some much needed energy.

What about Valencia?

Ozil is an interesting possibility, but hardly an imperative signing for us. We have plenty of attacking midfield options.

Do you just mean he should be there, or are you suggesting we convert him into a central midfielder to provide some much-needed energy? The latter would be sheer silliness, if you meant the other think then yes, he will be a major player next season even if he's not first choice. Should get 30 games on the right at least.

Scholes will play 20 games, Giggs the same. If you count them as playing the same position that's the centre of midfield sorted. Anderson is a dead weight who needs to be dropped. We need to bring in a midfield enforcer this summer.

A large amount of goals United scored last year came from Valencia one way or another, as much as Nani came on last season I still think i'd have Valencia on the right personally.

EDIT: Although I expect SAF will be telling him to work on his shooting and try for goal a bit more.

Anderson has dropped in form, but his run when he first came to us was incredible. We need to give him another chance to reach those heights, and develop his game further as he's only young. Yeah, Nani will spend most of his time next season on the left next season, and Valencia on the right. I'd prefer Nani on the right for the big games though.

We need Sneijder.

I wish he'd been involved in the Ronaldo deal somehow. I said as much the summer we sold him. Madrid seemed so keen to get rid of their brilliant Dutch players, I'm still surprised we didn't try and get one or two on the cheap.

I meant why isn't he a preferred starter over Hernandez? As for converting him to central midfield, doesn't he play there for Ecuador?

We need Schweinsteiger. And from what I've seen off Hernandez he likes to play right off the shoulders of the defenders eg where Rooney played last season. I reckon if they both start in the same 11 then Rooney will play to the left or off Hernandez.

Can't agree - Anderson is a great player, ideal for a DM role, injury has kept him down and it's his season for the taking if it shakes it off.
