The old Man Utd Thread

Call it mindless optimism, but I think they'll be an upset with Wigan and Man U will pip it. Something about Chelsea's season - the knowledge that they can play dog shit when they really shouldn't - I think it more than likely that just a few defensive jitters early on could cost them the game.

I think Wigan do have the attackers that can hurt them, it's just a question of whether they'll see any of the ball. I'm predicting a classy and assured performance from Chelsea, who have been here before and know what they need to do. Also, Wigan have Titus Bramble. Nuff said.

Evans has signed a new deal, or is at least close to signing one. SAF let it slip at a press conference. Not as a bad as telling him he should marry his bird, but still clearly not something he should be telling everyone until it's done and dusted. Great news anyway, he's been immense this season. Just wish we still had Pique to pair him with.

Valencia star David Silva has claimed that he is honoured by interest from Manchester United, insisting he would find it hard to resist a move to Old Trafford in the future.

The tricky midfielder has made it clear that he's happy at Valencia, but that it would be very hard for him to turn down an offer from United if the Red Devils decided to make a move for him.

"When you hear a club like Manchester United is interested in you it is an honour. I am very aware of the Premier League, and in recent years it has been the stand-out league in the world," said Silva to the Daily Express.

"If it came calling, especially if it was a club like Manchester United, it would be very hard to resist. I am happy at Valencia, but every player has his price and if they get an offer they think is good business anything is possible."

This would be great if it can be pulled off before the WC, otherwise his price would be too silly...

Can you accommodate 2 world class strikers though. Fergie seems to like the Rooney up front on his own formation, and I can't see them wanting to share that every game. And Villa is too good to leave on the bench! Especially if you're playing 40 mil or whatever. And he's not a spring chicken.

I doubt you'll get him.

:D Easy mistake to make.

We've been linked with him a few times in the past and I suspect he is one of the players we're linked with who we are genuinly interested in. It all depends on what Ferguson decides to do with the midfield next year, Carrick hasn't started since the first Bayern game (I think) and I really wouldn't be surprised to see him leave. That means we either need a midfield anchorman (Cambiasso please!) or we move Fletcher back there, have Hargreaves for cover and then whoever else in the attacking position(s).

Either way I can't see him (or Villa) staying at Valencia for another season as their value will be at it's highest around the WC so he has to go somewhere!

I wish we'd signed him last summer. Absolutely on the top of my list. He could play either side of a front three, or as the second striker. Both those formations need Rooney to really work, though. If he openly wants to come here, I suppose that's the biggest issue gone with any potential transfer. Also Valencia are still swimming in debt, so they might need to sell anyway. They'd probably proritize keeping Villa which is good for us too.

Sid Lowe was discussing Valencia on the last Football Weekly and mentioned the debt is no longer much of an issue (local government bailout, FTW!) and that the official he spoke to was quietly confident they could stave off interest in Villa and Silva again (although Juan Mata might be a more viable sell).

Obviously, Valencia aren't likely to turn around and say, 'yeah, sure, all for sale, fill your boots everybody,' as that'd be like taking on pocket aces with a beer hand. Would be gutted if you got Silva, as he'd light up the Premier League, not to mention we've been linked with him in the past. Maybe £1.8m and El Zahr would cover his cost? :D

I'd think they would be more likely to sell Villa. After the WC his value could be inflated and at 28 time is running out for a big money move. As he reaches 29 and 30 the number of clubs willing to buy him and his value drops off, whereas Mata is 22, Silva is 24, both have years left in them. This summer is potentially when Villa's value will be at its all time highest.

At the same time, his goals (of which there are plenty) are so important to them. If they wish to continue qualifying for Europe, and competing when they're there, he's probably their most important player. Yes his value is peaking, I just think he's worth more to them than anyone else right now.

Yeah, can see both sides. Difficult to say which would be better for Valencia, although if they sold Silva, Mata could fill the void and vice versa (albeit Mata would have to expand from his current role a little). Unless they're planning to use Villa money to buy Rooney, Torres or Eto'o then there aren't many players capable of filling El Guaje's boots. Ah, okay, it wasn't that difficult to say!

Oh god, you're going to sign Villa and win the CL and #19* next year, aren't you? Swines!

*maybe #20, depends on Wigan...

Right, so I'm not giving Wigan a chance, unless John Terry plays like he did against Tottenham. They all know what they need to do, and they won't have any trouble doing it. Wigan beating them is about as likely as us losing to Stoke. I'll still be checking on the Chelsea game every now and then still, obv.

I think he's great, but he's got to go. You can see in his body language that he's lost all confidence and I think a lot of the players around him have too. He never settled since he arrived and I think a decent season might have helped him out, but it isn't to be.

Get rid and get someone who'll fit the team better.

Caldwell off for Wigan, Lampard puts away the penalty. That's about as badly as that could have gone at this stage, then.

*edit*

Ah, I see we've already covered that. Let's make this a rout, finish the season in style, regardless of what's happening in London.
