The old Man Utd Thread

Don't get all the Neville hate. For his flaws of being slow as fuck nowadays, he's done very little wrong this second half of the season. Think he's played very well in a fair few games in that period too. I'd of thought him being first choice for so long and easily the Premier Leagues best ever RB might have brought him some respect, guess not.

Since he's had a run of games he's certainly been a lot better but most of the good performances have been against weak teams and he has unsurprisingly struggled against pace. Bellamy skinned him a few times yesterday and Barry did himself out of a legitimate penalty by overdoing the fall. I actually don't think his defense is the biggest issue though, his crossing which has been terrible recently and his lack of pace severely hampers Valencia as well. It's testement to Valencia's ability that he managed to put in a decent performance yesterday. It's not like Neville picks the team though so can't put the blame on him for playing.

The title is going to be tight now. The Scholes goal yesterday harked back to Macheda's against Villa last season. If we can beat Spurs then I just about fancy us for the title. Torres may be out for Liverpool but they could now be fighting for a Europa League position let alone a CL spot so it could be a must win game for them. Likewise Wigan could still be in a relegation scrap so who knows what could happen. Exciting times!

Neville is such a nutter.

*edit*

I found it bigger. If anyone finds one wallpaper-sized (at least 1280 * 800) you let me know, k?

From the Guardian's "Five things we learned from the Premier League this weekend"

Gary Neville and Paul Scholes should get a room

That kiss was wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. And before you scuttle off down to the comments section to level accusations of homophobia at us, don't bother. If it was two ripped and dashing footballers – some Matt Taylor-on-Jason Roberts action, for example – we'd have no problem with such ostentatious public displays of man-love and possibly be even a little turned on. Hell, even if Gary Neville had just planted one hand on either side of Paul Scholes's head and laid a shock-and-awe black-and-white movie style smacker on his lips, that would have been fine too. But it was the tenderness of the moment, the cupping of the face, the tilting of the heads, the eyes closed expectantly, the blur of ginger hair and wispy not-quite-beardness in yesterday's sport sections that put us off our lunch. Down with this sort of thing. Careful now.

£20m? LMAO. Everyone knew he wasn't worth that even when we bought him.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...ne-20m-bid.html

That link says he has scored 12 goals this season.

Really? Is he hardly ever used? Or is the system at the moment designed around feeding the in-form Rooney?

That seems incredible to me, if it is the all-competitions number. I assumed he'd have at least 20

So Liverpool have to travel 24 hours or more to Madrid. Best case scenario is they are well beaten. This makes it unlikely they will win the Europa League, giving them renewed focus on the Premier League and finishing in the top six. Meaning they will have to try their very hardest against Chelsea...

Wouldn't it just be perfect if Liverpool won us our 19th title. :coffee:

All from open play though

We did help out beating Blackburn all those years ago, shame Andy LOLe couldn't hit a barn down down at Upton Park (although that would be a lot more amusing if you hadn't won 612 titles since).

Nah, it'd be shite seeing your lot win #19, but I can stomach the thought of it more than I could the thought of my own team rolling over for the sake of a rivalry. Mind you, we've rolled over and had our bellies tickled many times this season so no-one would probably notice anyway.

As an aside, do you think Mr Ferguson would step down if you clinched the league this season?

There's no way Liverpool will do anything to help us win the Prem. Regardless of that, I can't see them beating Chelsea though to be honest.

Their epic journey is being oversold somewhat. They are going on the train to Paris. You can do Liverpool to London in about two hours on the train. London to Paris takes almost exactly the same amount of time. They are then staying in a nice hotel in Paris overnight, and if the airports are open in the morning (which is highly likely) flying from Paris to Madrid. If the airports are closed, they are taking the train to Bordeaux and flying to Madrid from there as it is outside the no fly zone.

I'm pretty sure the players will only be taking hand luggage. The other kit is probably going in a van or something and will meet them at the other end. It will probably be quite a relaxing trip, though they will use it as an excuse if they get turned over.

Considering how little he's been used in the smaller games and that Rooney is the main penalty taker (in fact, the only penalty taker we trust), twelve goals is a great tally, the best for a second striker in the Premiership as far as I can remember.

I'm not sure about the Berbatov thing, I think hes pretty useful to have and that we should ideally want to get the best out of him, but that means getting in a strike partner to complement him and and actually play that kind of system, which probably won't happen on both accounts. Which then suggests that if someone is going to pay £20 million, thats more than we will ever get for him from this point on, but then again do any of you think the money would go and a superstar striker to save us? More like disappear down a hole and make do with Owen and Pea-lad.

Like I say, ideally i'd like him to stay (but then I think i'd also like us to sign another top rate striker as well). I don't have any problems with him as a player, hes perhaps not scoring as many as we all want due to circumstances as much as anything... I definately don't see him as shit.

On the Liverpool issue, I'm not sure I can see them doing one on Chelsea tbh, especially without Torres and Gerrard not being on tip-top form this season. They definitely won't be going out of their way given they have little to play for and a possible final to look towards.

I'm not getting my hopes up, we've been pretty poor on average this season, so don't expect a title out of it. Still, come on Liverpool!?

I think he's a decent player that's far too hard on himself and is obviously scoring enough compared to other second strikers and compared to our past second strikers, but if we were offered £20m I wouldn't say no, AC would be quite the club for him to go to. I think having Owen, Macheda, Diouf and Chicharitomon as rotation strikers wouldn't be a bad situation to be in.

Berbatov can stay if we can afford to get another striker without selling him. Otherwise, building a strike force round such a lacklustre, unconfident, erratic player is suicide. It can't be fun for him either. I bet he wants to leave - he certainly looks miserable on the pitch. Makes Ginola look chirpy.

On what evidence? The games where we have lost or been bad have pretty much correlated with the games Rooney has missed or gone missing. I'm not sure that is enough, it's not even enough with Berbatov in the mix, let alone without him.

We really don't know whether the latter three are even going to be good enough to play regularly for us, and Owen is hardly a dead cert to hold down a place in the team.

A hat-trick in the Champs League, Carling Cup Final goal amongst others from Owen, Diouf looks strong in the reserves and needs a few games, Chicharitochu (on YouTube, I know I know!) has the energy to partner Rooney.

Either way, Rooney will do well whoever he's with.

Thats my point though, what about when he's not there?

Having won the Milk Cup twice in a row (coming against Everton in the final both times), and with the northern reserves title wrapped up, the future looks extremely bright for our club. SAF has reserved praise for Corry Evans and Oliver Norwood (beats me), who have emerged as a great central midfield partnership. Nice to see Ole's doing well in his new job too; perhaps we have another option when SAF goes.

Our reserves only play down the road from me. I should really check their fixture list for next season, and get to some games.

When he is not there we have berbs he has scored 12 this season and we should have support from diouf, kiko, welbeck, owen.

Compare to

Chelsea - apart from Drogba , Anelka has scored 9

Liverpool - Torres and 9 for Kuyt

Arsenal - apart from inujury ridden Van Persie have asharvin 9 and betner 6

There are no teams with two strikers banging them in 20 a piece

oh and Rooney has played in 42 games this season - he is not even injury prone
