The old Man Utd Thread

Higuain is leaving Madrid this summer. FACT.

We should snap him up - but we won't

I've been saying this for aaaages.

What makes you so sure of this fact? I knew he wasn't favored for a long time, but his score tally has been mental this season for them.

Why on earth would Madrid sell Higuain? They've had some astoundingly talented 'rejects' in the last few years.

Is the real story behind this not that Ronaldo and Higuain don't like each other and one will have to go? Could have sworn I read that somewhere.

As the Guardian podcast said this week, an Inter side lead by reject Sneijder and a Bayern side lead by reject Robben must be laughing their bollocks off at Real not reaching a final in their own stadium.

While Lyon without Benzema make the semi-final.

Dunno about that, but I've seen Sid Lowe state numerous times that the reason Higuain often carries the can is because he was bought by Ramon Calderon and as such isn't one of Florentino Perez's bumchum favourites.

I can't see another big name striker coming in unless Berbatov leaves. The only way we will is if it is someone like Benzema who can play wider but I still can't see it happening.

The anchor midfield position has become the main issue for me. Carrick has been on a downward trajectory for nigh on two seasons now. Fletcher has proved brilliant in a more attacking box to box role and Anderson will never be a holding midfielder. Even if Hargreaves does get 'fit' he'll never be able to play the 40 plus games a season that Carrick has done so that leaves us without anyone at all to play that holding role that is so important in a 4-3-3 (slightly less so in a 4-4-2). I'd love to see someone like Cambiasso come in but I doubt that will happen. Keeper is obviously an issue as well although I think we are actually alright across the rest of the defense, there is simply no way we will have another season with such rotten injuries across the back 4.

Yes. It's clear that UTD need some spark in the midfield. It's where they're losing games. The defence is fine and the attack is fine - the only reason Berbatov and co aren't banging them in is because nobody is supplying them through the middle. Plenty of crosses are there thanks to Nani and Valencia and Giggs when he comes on, but they somebody who can control the game in the middle and thread a nice throughball into the box or at least create some shape to base a bit of build-up play on. That's my uneducated opinion, anyway.

Yeah that sounds a fair assessment to me. I've seen Gourcuff and Hamsik listed by a lot of United fans as someone they think could do a creative job in midfield like you describe. I wish we'd gone for Van Der Vaart or Snjeider

We've been heavily linked with Steven Defour from Standard Liege for a while but he's just signed a new contract with them. It's been no secret that Fergie was after him though as he wrote him a letter when he was out with a broken foot a while back.

'Dear Steven, I heard that you have a serious injury. You probably don't feel at your best, and you'll have lots of doubts in your mind. But don't worry, as everything will turn out fine. You will have to work hard to make your comeback, but then I will follow your performances closely. I will certainly keep in contact with Standard, and I hope that your mental strength holds out.'

This is true, and Gourcuff is a great shout oli.

I still think we need another first rate striker though too.

I would think Gourcuff would cost an absolute fortune and apparently he's not that consistant, although I confess I don't pay much interest to the french league.

Put me in the VDV or Hamsik camp. However VDV has recently said he is happy at Real and wants to see out his contract.

Defour is a defensive midfielder in the Hargreaves mould is he not?

Apparently even though VDV is playing brilliantly for Madrid at the moment he'll be benched as soon as kaka, who's been mostly shite, is fit. At least Perez told the Spanish media he fully expects Kaka to make a straight return to the team. Surely that will piss him off no end if it's true?

I feel kinda sorry for Berbatov and I'm not sure why Ferguson bought him in the first place any more, it's plain to see Berbatov needs a strike partner alongside him as he's simply not going to put in the shift required of a lone striker. But everyone knew this when he was at Spurs so why did Ferguson spend 30 million on a player that will be ineffective in the big games as United always go with a 4-5-1 that turns into 4-3-3 in attack formation for those games. I read that Berbatov has started 6 out of 22 champions league games so far, 6 starts for the club's record signing?

I know a-lot of people think Berbatov is lazy and maybe he is, but Ferguson bought a square peg for a round hole and has been trying to make it fit ever since. I'd put money down that if Berbatov leaves and goes to a club that plays 4-4-2 he will be a big success again, his goal record for United isn't what was expected but it's hardly as bad as some make it out to be.

As I said Berbatov doesn't fit the system Ferguson falls back on in the big games so I'm lost as to why he spent 30 million on a squad player.

I agree on the holding midfield player as that's clearly were we are losing the games, they took a gamble with Hargreaves given his fitness record and it back fired spectacularly, basically we still need to replace Roy Keane.

Oh the debt, the debt. We've not spent insignificant sums since the Glazers took over you know.

There's no way we'll sign 3 potentially big name players as well as this new Mexican lad and Smalling - five new players would unbalance the squad surely?

Utterly incredible. I'm astonished. Are you the guy that keeps writing to the MEN and defending the parasites? There was me thinking the author was a City fan on a windup. Or a paid stooge.

I truely thought the bond prospectus had woken folk up. How wrong, sadly. The manager has spent less than 5 million net. But, yeah, it's all down to a lack of value.

"We first received some background knowledge of the boy last October," the manager said. "One of our scouts went to Mexico in December and watched a few games – the reports that came back were very good. At that time we thought we'd just wait because he was only young.

"But then he came into the national team and that created a potential problem: if he went to the World Cup and did well at the tournament then we could be in danger of losing him.

"So I sent our chief scout, Jim Lawlor, over to Mexico for three weeks to watch him and get some more background on the boy. While Jim was there, Chicharito played twice for the national team and also for Chivas: he scored in every game.

"Jim filed a fantastic report on the boy, so last week we sent our club solicitor over there with Jim to do the deal. We're delighted to sign him."

Although bursting with potential, Chicharito is hardly a global household name. But Sir Alex isn't bothered by the 21-year-old's lack of superstar status.

"We like doing these kind of deals," the boss said. "We identify young talent and we’ve been good at that over the years. These are the kind of signings we prefer to make."

When you see these deals you expect the player to have been watched for years but that's obviously not the case here.

I heard we only paid around £6m or so for him. Not a bad bit of business for someone who has been scoring a lot this season. Even if he turns out to be shit we could recoup most of that fee.

Where did you hear that?

Not at all I just don't think every failing can be laid at the feet of the Glazers. If they weren't around I'm not sure it's sensible to keep being ripped off simply for being Man Utd

Not a bad team out today

VDS

Neville

Ferdinand

Vidic

O'Shea

Valencia

Giggs

Scholes

Nani

Berbatov

Macheda

Nice for Evra to finally get a bit of rest, unfortunately no sign on Hargreaves on the bench though. Interestingly no Carrick on the bench either

Carrick wasn't at the races against Bayern, he had what's known as a shocker...

To be fair to Nani, he'd be expecting a lung busting forward ala Rooney to be there on the end of his cross, Macheda coming back from injury though....
