The old Man Utd Thread

What was going on with Milan's defense for Rooney's second goal I've no idea, two very decent headers from him in the end, though.

And it was a quality game. Good to see 'Dinhio showing why he was once the world's best player even if his pace has desserted him, and Seedorf's little came was pure class. You've got to be favourites to go through now, but it's far from over.

Ronaldinho had some beautiful touches but his lack of effort was embarrassing at times. If Dunga takes him to the WC playing like that i'll be surprised.

Part of the problem seemed to be that we played an open game at Milan's pace and that was always going to suit them to some extent. The last goal makes the return tie a shade more interesting but i'm not convinced they will outscore us at OT playing like they did tonight. The most frustrating thing for me is the lack of pace in our midfield, Fletcher did a really good job considering he was on the wrong flank but Scholes was no better than any of their players and Carrick seemed to lose it a bit towards the end. It's a shame Anderson has been a bellend as he'd have been useful to have for the last 20 odd minutes.

Yeah I just meant Ronaldinhio showed the ability that made him great. He'll never actually be that player again.

The midfield battle was interesting. I do agree it was almost as if you tried to play Milan at their own game and it came off just looking unnatural. I doubt you'll give the ball so frequently and so sloppily at OT, but then again if you do I doubt Huntelaar or Pato will carry on missing those chances. Tie definitely in your favour, but both team's performances showed it can still go either way.

I think that is partly because it was the away game of a two legged tie, our first leg against Inter last year saw a similarly poor performance at times. We won't play like that at OT, especially after the players saw how Milan just gave up for most of the second half.

I remember us dominating most of that match at the San Siro last season, first half in particular was one of the best away performances I've seen from us. The only upside to Milan getting a second is that we will have to concentrate and wont try to coast the home leg.

That's how I remember the first leg against Inter too. We only drew 0-0 but we totally outplayed them. We were actually worse when we won the return leg at OT

Maybe i'm thinking about the second leg then

Apart from the last few minutes of today's game I can just remember having the same feeling that we could play as badly as we wanted and would still go through.

Is it only me that seems to be totally baffled by Park's role in the team last night? Man marking Pirlo when Milan had the ball. Fletcher out the left. It made little to no sense.

The team selections are slightly baffling at times, Valencia not playing, our £30 million striker on the bench (I'm sure when we bought him Fergie mentioned something about him being great for big European nights).

It seems a done deal that Vidic is on the way out in the summer as well now, with him being permanently injured and declaring himself unfit for last night.

All Nani had to do was take on his man and we probably could have been cruising in the first half. The majority of times he took too long or cut back on his left to deliver a useless ball.

All Scholes had to do was keep possession. The one thing the man has grown up doing. He is a master at it. Yet time and time again he played ridiculous passes, or left balls for someone else only to get it picked off by a Milan player.

All Park had to do was roll around on the floor acting like he was injured, so Fergie HAD to take him off. Its ridiculous how he gets in the team to be honest. He gives nothing to attack or defence.

Carrick getting sent off, for changing direction of the ball, means that Fletch and Scholes will start. But for the second leg I'd like to see a 4-4-2 with Berb up top. Last nights game would have been a perfect stage for him. No pace to go up against so he should have been able to hold it up up top and deliver killer passes. Berb will be a game changer in the second leg.

It was a strange one but then it did work, so...

I mean Fletcher had a fantastic game and Park had some good moments in the final third finding pockets of space. He was involved a lot with our good period of the game. Plus, Pirlo is their playmaker so attaching some one like Park to him to spoil does make sense.

I thought the team was spot on and I predicted as such. Nani is in good form so deserved his start (all be it he didn't have the best of games last night) to be fair to him. Valencia will get his chance to stake a claim for the wide right berth. We was always going to play 4-5-1 and you need Rooney playing as the lone front man because he's just so bloody good at it. Berbatov missed out for that reason.

The rest of the team picked itself really.

Vidic is on his way for sure too, I've been saying this for a few months now. No evidence to back it up, just a gut feeling

It'll be 4-5-1 again. I'm 99 percent certain. All the success we've had in Europe over the last 2 years plus as come about with playing 4-5-1. I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

I'm Berbatov's biggest fan but whenever Rooney is fit they is no space in a 4-5-1 system for him.

Who are we going to play in the centre?! The only possible solution will to bring Anderson back from exile but I can't see that happening.

Well, we don't play them again until the 10th of March which is 3 weeks away. No reason why Anderson won't get a chance in that time. Plus, they is Gibson too if needed.

Valencia could play down the centre, he does for Ecuador? Or Park in the middle again with Nani and Valencia out wide

I would like to see Anderson bought back but with only a few games between now and the second leg who knows if he'll get the chance? He would have probably featured for the reserves at some point but ther games keep being cancelled. He's looked happy enough in the training pictures so i'm hoping it will be just be a blip and we'll see him again soon.

I think we might go with a 4-4-2 at OT, the amount of space we got behind their midfield would have been perfect for Berbatov and knowing that they now have to come to OT and go for a win there will be even more space. As Trigg says though it will probably be a 4-3-3, after all it worked well last night despite half the players doing their best to pretend they had never seen a football before.

Also, Vidic's agent has come out and said that he isn't for sale and that they are tired of the transfer talk. Not that it really means that much but it's not the usual line an agent takes when trying to get a move for their player....

Valencia is looking very dangerous for us, in the first ten minutes anyway. 4-4-2 with Berbatov and Rooney up front, probably playing that way out of respect for Everton's defensive capabilities.

*edit*

Again Valencia is the outlet, beautiful ball in and Everton do not deal with it. Smashed into the roof of the net by Berbatov.

*edit*

Big ball in, crap header from Evans and someone I've never heard of is invited to hit it. He does, with aplomb. Ah well at least it was a good goal.
