The old Man Utd Thread

I dunno, if Rooney gets injured or gets sold (I know) there is no replacement. He accounts for most of our attacking play. We can't afford to buy anyone, but Owen isn't scoring enough, Berbatov has his injury and isn't scoring as many as he should, Kiko is looking for a loan move, Wellbeck is being used more as a winger for some reason when he even plays, and as for Diouf, he looks like he can score a hatfull, but its still early days.

Some interesting reading in the Manchester United programme ahead of their game with Hull, where boss Sir Alex Ferguson has made an impassioned plea for Red Devils fans to try to quell their unhappiness about the club's financial situation after their debts were revealed to have risen to £716m. Ferguson said: "We mustn't allow the situation to be divisive. We could be perceived as being split which I believe would be harmful and inaccurate."

That was from BBC live text. Not really sure what Fergie's deal is really.

The full text from today's programme:-

"One for all, and all for one... its a terrible cliche, but nevertheless it does sum up one of the essentials for success in team sport.

The family of Manchester United is under pressure as a result of all the issues and controversies surrounding the ownership and financial situation of the club that have been stirred up in the media.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and to express disapproval if the don't like what they see around them. Just as it has always been the right of the fans to let it be known if they are not happy with the way their team are playing.

I'm not slow to express disapproval myself if something I don't agree with - even in the boardroom with the directors. But once I walk out of the meeting I get on with my job as manager of the team.

Some of our fans are clearly unhappy with the financial position, but we mustn't allow the situation to become divisive. The danger, as I see it, is that we could be presented as being split, which would be harmful and inaccurate because I believe the vast majority of United fans are behind us and appreciate the importance of standing together in support of the team.

I could see our opponents rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of watching us fall out among ourselves if we don't all think carefully about what we are doing.

We must not lose our focus - which, from where I stand, is about building a strong football team that will win trophies. That's what we are about, or at least should be.

We must remain loyal to the cause of Manchester United. The staff and players should be quite one-eyed about that, and stay true to the history of the club and all the work done by Sir Matt Busby and the other managers who have contributed to creating the great club we have at Old Trafford today.

This is not about stifling criticism; it's simply a plea to stand together rather than take action that will damage ourselves more than anyone else.

Manchester United is bigger than me, the players, the directors, officials and the fans. And particularly at this critical stage of our season, we need to pull in the same direction.

It would be a shame to lose our concentration now because I can really see light at the end of the tunnel as we ready ourselves to push for the championship."

Didn't expect him to come out and speak the truth, but "The family of Manchester United is under pressure as a result of all the issues and controversies surrounding the ownership and financial situation of the club that have been stirred up in the media." is not only inaccurate but quite disgusting really. Very few papers said anything when the deal was done, and absolutely nothing when the team won things again. People, granted a very small percentage, knew about this stuff and voiced it without the aid of the media.

Granted some reports have been shit, but had it not been for the media getting the prospectus and publishing it people would only have suspicion and not the concrete facts of what has and will happen. Though, that said anybody whose seen the annual financial report had ammunition anyway.

Then again he's hardly going to speak the truth and say "shit, it's actually largely down to me that the parasites are here", was he.

---------------------------------

Listened to the game on Key 103 Manchester sounded like we did OK bar messing up shit loads of chances. Nervy post half time, they had a chance at 1-0 that could have been buried but missed. Berba came on, we became more potent and Rooney was superb.

Was spitting feathers when I heard the team and no Valencia, doubly so as it was Nani on the wrong side and Park in his place. As it turns out everyone thinks Nani was good. Excellent, good on him. Thought he started the season well then went back to his bad ways, hopefully this positive performance from him will be repeated.

Rooney is killing it lately, his general play has been great. I saw that goal he scored agaisnt Newcastle a while back, the mega volley and it never fails to blow me away that did that. Interesting that the top 4 PL scorers are English just now.

Nani looked good today, and Owen showed some good interplay, despite poor finishing.

But Rooney is amazing

Nani was very good. He was certainly less wasteful than in recent times, and his crossing was back to what we saw when he first joined us. When he's on his game I still think he's the best crosser in the team.

Will be interesting to see how Nani does in the next few games he plays. He was genuinly excellent yesterday but on another day he could just as easily have lost the ball when dribbling and put in shit crosses. Still, if he shows some consistency then he brings a much better balance to the team than Giggs when Valencia is on the right.

If Berbatov is fit then I hope we play a 4-4-2 on Wednesday, Rooney can cause them all kinds of problems in defense and there is no way Mancini will play a remotely attacking formation. Wouldn't be surprised if we see Brown at RB though, Rafael played today and I would expect him to play against Arsenal as well. My worry for the latter is that Ferguson will want to play a 3-man central midfield and the only way he'll do that is with Rooney up top on his own and I doubt we'll be able to win the game playing like that.

What was good about Nani yeaterday is that he didnt over dribble the ball. I think he's getting it into his head that when he creates half a yard of space, pass the ball or cross it. I hope he continues to do well and that this isnt a false dawn.

Any idea when Vidic is back? Im wondering whether Rio's fitness would stand up to the games against City and Arsenal.

Fergie Jr. has taken Danny Welbeck on loan until the end of the season.

Quite surprised by that, he gets plenty of first team action. Couldn't see Sir Alex giving him to anyone else but PNE.

Maybe Diouf is penciled in to get more game time

He was excellent to be fair to him. Amazing what a bit of confidence can do, thought he looked good against Burnley too so hopefully he can carry on where he left off and get a good run of games. When he confident and playing well he's not only the best crosser but he's out best winger. Just hasn't done it on a consistent basis really.

Think he's impressed a lot of people so far in his short time here (his hatrick in the reserves was good to see). I know the players have all spoken highly and been impressed how quickly he's settled. Won't do Welbeck any harm either as long as he gets games on a regular basis.

Doesn't really surprise me at all tbh, we're out of the FA Cup, only a maximum of 2 left in the Carling Cup - which will likely be more of a first team effort after the other cup exit, Milan in the Champions league, and he hardly played at all in the League, only sub appearances in 3-4 games IIRC.

He needs to be playing more than he is, Kiko too.

Anything to do with him being on the right instead of the left , do you think?

I'm not so sure. While he did play well on the right against Hull, his better performances in the past have come on the left wing. Not to mention I don't think he'll displace Valencia any time soon so I hope Nani can emulate his performances on the left.

Yeah, I think hes right footed isn't he?

If thats so, it makes sense why he cut in across goal more when hes played on the left and been forced to dribble rather than take a decent cross.

Not surprised to see Welbeck go on loan, he’s probably 6th in line up front and 5th/6th on the wing now Park and Nani are fit. Diouf has shown some promise and Macheda has just come back from injury so we aren’t short of options.

Nani has always appeared pretty two footed although he obviously prefers his right foot. At least when he is on the left it means he can cut in for the shot easier. It’s not like with Valencia who is unlikely to shoot from distance anyway so he is better on the right where he can get beyond his man with pace. Ferguson has said that he can play in the centre (as he has for Ecuador I believe) although I very much doubt we’ll try it (but it could be interesting to say the least!).

Good to see Rafael getting some regular games, does anyone else think he’s starting to look pretty stacked? He seems to have put on a fair bit of muscle. It’s just a shame Fabio is competing with not only an awesome full back but quite possibly the first man to discover the secret to perpetual motion. I’d actually quite like to see Fabio play ahead of Rafael at some point, more for comedy value than anything else but who knows, twin intuition could make them an awesome combo!

Yeah, theres no reason SAF couldn't rotate Rafael and Fabio at right back if he wanted Fabio to play more, although I assume if he sees Rafael as a regular at that role in the future he will want him to make it his own rather than share it.

Can't complain about having Pat fit and playing well though, hes been about the only constant we've had all season. :)

Talking of wingers and the left side though; Tosic eh? What happened there?

You think he'll be sold/loaned or do you think he'll be in the background for a bit then come through when hes been trained the English game more?

He just hasn't performed well enough to get a chance I don't think. He has had one or two standout performances in the reserves but nothing to really make people stand up and notice. Its a shame because he as a cracking left foot, just not sure the rest of his game is up to scratch, yet.

SAF is always willing to give players time so who knows what the future holds for Tosic. Should an decent offer come in though I wouldn't be surprised to see him offloaded.

I meant it literally sorry, so Fabio playing right midfield ahead of Rafael. Won't happen mind.

No idea what will happen with Tosic. People occasionly complain that he hasn't been given a chance but Ferguson always seems willing to give players a chance if they are good enough.

Chances are you won't have, think he's only made 3 appearances for Fulham. I know he scored an OG against Chelsea not long ago but I don't remember him much from the game.

Ah yeah, I remember the Chelsea game vividly unfortunately. Thats who he is, I remember thinking at the time he had done well in the game and was unlucky with the OG.
