The old Man Utd Thread

Yeah, on current performances we can barely justify being in the top 4 let alone second place. At least we know that when we start gettings some defenders fit (and Fletcher back in midfield!) our performances should improve. Chelsea have only got a couple of injuries and are just not playing as well as they were a couple of months ago so who knows how it will go for them.

At least our next couple of games aren't against overly dangerous opposition.

He's been bright when I've seen him play (which is about 6 games or so now) to be fair to him. He's quick, skillful and direct and he's got a sweet left foot which if he did come to United would provide a little bit of balance on the wing.

I also think it might be a good deal for Nani too. He's highly thought of in his native country as he generally shines when playing for Portugal. I like him as a player, and I think he's suffered in the shadow of Ronaldo and I'm not so sure he can find a way back in the colour of United. If he does move on, which I suspect he might well do, I think he's forge a good career in his own right. Just a shame he can't seem to do it for United, all be it he's not the first and won't be the last.

Good news about Diouf too, surely he can't do any worse than Manucho. Ole speaks very highly of Diouf too and I'd trust Ole with my life!

So the Daily Fail say that Utd are preparing a £9m + Nani bid for Angel di Maria. Whats your thoughts?

He obviously can't play in Europe this season, but is he any good? I have seen nothing of him but heard about our interest in him a while ago.

So we (potentially) bid 9mil for him then?

Manchester United's Senegal striker Mame Biram Diouf will be available to make his debut in January after being granted a work permit. The 22-year-old signed from Molde this year before returning to the Norwegian side on loan.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on the club's website that he has been impressed with Diouf and says he could make his debut in the New Year.

"He's been training with us and is looking very exciting," said Ferguson. Diouf has scored 35 goals in 74 games for Molde, who are ex-United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's former club.

The forward has made one appearance for the senior Senegal national side, and is at United's disposal next month because his country did not qualify for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, he will not be available for the FA Cup tie against Leeds on 3 January.

It annoys me how Benitez gets the press on his back for having players like Voronin in the team who came on a free, while Fergie gets no stick for spending £30m on Berbatov, who has been rubbish considering the money paid. Compared that to Torres for £20m...

Probably because Ferguson has earnt a little bit more leeway on the quality of his transfers. Also a lot of media (at least online) do tend to criticise Berbatov.

You're comparison is pretty retarded as well, we only spent 3.5 on Obertan vs 11 on Babel, 5 on Evra vs 18 on Johnson etc etc. You can argue the toss all day long but generally Fergie gets it right far more than wrong and has show time and again that he has the ability to improve players of all ages. Liverpool's strategy of having to sell to buy would work a lot better if Benitez was able to do the same.

Berbatov was overpriced, but that was more to do with Spurs and then the City interest. I think every United fan here would have loved to have seen us spend £20 Million on Torres than £30 million on Berbs, but that probably the only example Benitez has over Fergie, an example that we oft reminded is a player who loves Liverpool and always wanted to play for them. Benitez must have done some hard scouting and tough negociating work to secure that guy. :P

Of all the players you give as an example of the manager not taking flak for you choose Berbatov! That guy takes more stick than anyone, and Fergie for signing him!

IMO though; critics of Berbatov should also be prescribed a healthy dose of actually watching him play regularly.

Amongst the Henry handball furore I completely missed King Eric saying on Domenech "he's the worst coach since Louis XVI". ;)

Here is another one from the great man;

What shocks me the most is that this player, at the end of the game, went to sit next to an Ireland player to comfort him - when he had just screwed him. If I had been an Irishman he wouldn't have lasted three seconds

Yeah we were shit. Incredibly sloppy passing and disjointed. And pretty close to a full strength team out there. And that 'sign of champions' quote has been used about us for about the last 18 months now. I remember when we used to win games playing well for most of the season :hmm:

After saying I wanted Berbatov to play more often he was really bad today. Some of his passing is so lazy and thoughtless it beggars belief. Such an infuriating player.

Some Liverpool fans are still saying this, at least it's applicable to us!

The problem is that a lot (or all) of his passes just look lazy, when they come off they are brilliant and when they don't they are classed as lazy. His passing was far from the worst today anyway.

It is slightly worrying just how shit we are playing though. Credit should go out to Kuzsack though, playing in front of a complete mish mash of defense that changes with every game he's done exceptionally well. His distribution lets him down a bit but his shot stopping has been brilliant and he seems to be improving his command in the area with each game.

Terribly depressing to watch. Reminded me of last season's Champions League final with lengthy passages of play where no Utd player seemed capable of passing to another Utd player. I fear more for Hull after this flattering 3-1 victory. Against a half-decent side we'd be talking about a sixth league defeat of the season.

You're meant to feel good after a comfortable scoreline pulls you back to within two points of the leaders, but not on this occasion.

Berbatov certainly looks lackadaisical, but as you say, when it works, which to be fair is a lot of the time, it looks amazing, and he is by far the most technically gifted player in your squad. He hasn't been all out devestating for you, like he was for Spurs, but then again look at Carrick.

It seems to me that a return to basics is needed regarding training, which isn't really anything to be ashamed of. Many teams have to go back to simple passing and moving drills, to refresh the expression of flair... take note Fergie, I have spoken!

Doesn't matter how simple it is, the players and formations change so much that nobody has a chance to build up an understanding with anyone else. We got away with it last season because the players who did play consistently were on good form, this season you would struggle to name anyone who has stood out.

All fair points.

He'll have to dust off his big red hotline phone for you!

... so to speak... :(

We need to start putting out basically the same team every week. Obviously our injuries in defence haven't helped, but it's the only way we can find our rhythm.

What phresh said. Anyway, always nice to close the gap.

Its ridiculous that after the last couple of months we've had we're only 2 points behind Chelsea.

Mental. :hmm:

It's not inconceivable that Fulham get a result today given how Chelsea have been of late, and I think we'll beat Wigan. Take those 2 points and... What it doesn't disguise though is just how shit the league really is. Last year we didn't really attack very well but defended superbly which saw us through. This time, well we're doing neither yet still there.

What is really mental and what I can't get my head around is we play Sunday then Wednesday. At Xmas! What the hell happened to Boxing Day then the 28th, or 29th if lucky with a further game at New Year Day? Many teams have got the whole Saturday then Monday games thing but why I think there's been no moaning so far is that the main moaners in us, Scouse and Arse have an extended rest but interestingly Chelsea don't. It's obviously for TV in the majority, but for example why aren't we playing tomorrow seeing as we aren't on TV? Not complaining like, it's just very odd that certain teams have been relatively sheltered from the Xmas slog.
