The old Man Utd Thread

Obertan is scarily good.

Really came out of left-field (or right) didn't he?

Not sure anyone expected him to be half decent, let alone this season. It's odd, even Blanc and other people connected to Bordeaux seemed a bit non-plussed by him and surprised United were interested. Reflected in the fee also. Mind you he did seem to have a non-treated injury the entire time he was there and out on loan.

Big things to come for him hopefully. Need to get him a goal. :D

We defiantly started with a back 3 with Nani and Park playing as wing backs. A couple of players mentioned the change in system after the game.

We looked so much better when we went to a 4-3-3 with a proper back four.

Forgot to mention Evra as well, he was fantastic and seemed to thrive on being the captain for the night.

Oh yeah, and of course everyone will talk about YSB, but man, Scholes was good again.

He always was my favourite, doesn't ever get the praise he deserves (bar from Zidane) but the guy is, was and will always be sheer class.

YSB?

I don't see why we can't make Kuszczak the permanent successor to VDS, I feel much more confident with him in between the posts than Foster. He's pretty consistent and a good shot stopper.

Great goal by Owen for his third, showed some good speed and composure to put it away.

I believe one person said he was a really good buy. Not a Utd fan though...

Its a strange one. I remember him being really highly rated when he was a few years younger. Then when we actually signed him, his Manager at the time (Blanc) said he was shocked that we'd be interested in him.

Maybe the change in club has given him a new lease of life in terms of football. Not to mention he did have a spine injury for a year that seem to go unnoticed at his previous club.

He's made a bright start to his career with United and hopefully he can go on to be a successful player for us. Could well turn out to be a bargain at £3M thats for sure.

YSB?

Aye, that's what he's affectionately referred to as nowadays. You can't have missed the chant after each and every goal he's scored for the club, can you?

"I would love to play for Manchester United," Campbell told ESPN. "But I'm not counting any chickens, just waiting to see what happens.

"I have heard nothing officially from United. It would be a great move."

I bet he fucking would. Still, at least the fact he's talking about it rather than actually doing it suggests it may, just may, hopefully be nothing but talk on his and the agents behalf.

We'll be bringing Anderton out of retirement next

As long as the injuries ease over xmas I can't see us bringing in anymore centre backs (unless that Dodo chap is still coming).

Last nights game felt really strange in that we really, really should have lost but still came away looking like comfortable winners. It says a lot to be able to put out such a mashed up a team and still put in a half decent performance though. It's almost impossible to say how good a performance it was really, the team and formation we put out was completely mental, as ckny said it was proper FM stuff out there.

Obertan is starting to look like a real bargain and even Nani had an alright game by his standards, especially as he was playing as a wing-back come winger. I thought Park was pretty poor though, never seemed to offer much in attack or defense. Evra is just too fucking good though, when he plays as a full back he does a better job than most wingers in attacking and even playing in a 3 man defense (for the first 70-odd minutes) he got into attacking positions. Quite interesting that he was chosen as captain, I would have put money on it being Fletcher or possibly Carrick.

Would you play really well for a manager that said that?

Well no, those quotes I was referring to didn't materialise until the deal was all but complete. Not sure Blanc would have said them to Obertan directly as that would be a bit harsh! :P

I'm keen to play for the club too fatbob, reckon it's worth me emailing the Beeb? Unlike Sol, I can start now and not in January!

But, yeah, Ruud... personally I'd have loved to see him back.

I'd have Ruud back in a heartbeat too. Was my favorite player when he was here and I was gutted when we sold him, especially in the circumstances with him falling foul of SAF.

Looking forward to the weekend? We have an amazing record against you, but it's got to end some time. At times you looked beaten before you even started, probably with that record in mind. I'll never forget that cup tie at the start of the decade where we where losing 2-0 with 10 to go and then Ole and Ruud stepped up.

Nope. We are something like 24 games without a win against you guys. Last time we beat you was when we played your reserves in the League Cup in 1999 and Bosnich returned to Villa Park for the first time (he got dogs abuse). Last time we beat you in the league was 1995. The "You dont win anything with kids" game. Dwight Yorke scored for us, thats how long ago it was! The last time we won at Old Trafford was when we were defending champions of Europe.

We just dont beat Man Utd. Its odd, our record against the rest of the "big four" is pretty good. We still havent lost a game at the Emirates stadium, we have only lost at home to Chelsea once this century (Villa Park is the only English ground Mourinho failed to win a game at) and we tonked Liverpool at Anfield this season. We just cant beat Manchester United though. I picture this future where Bill Gates decides he is a Villa fan, signs us the entire Brazillian world cup winning XI and we still roll over and die whenever we play United. The winless run used to be annoying. Then it got depressing. Now its gone past depressing where most of us really dont give a fuck what the score is. We are so used to losing it really doesnt mean anything anymore. We just take consolation that at least we have as good a record in local derby games as you have against us.

Vidic returns for Villa match

Nemanja Vidic will return to bolster United's defence against Aston Villa on Saturday, but the Serbian will still be only one of two recognised defenders in the back four.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed to his Friday press conference that Vidic has overcome a recent bout of flu, and is likely to be joined by Michael Carrick in the centre of defence, with Darren Fletcher extending his recent stint on the right side of defence. Patrice Evra will continue at left-back.

The Reds' glut of rearguard concerns should ease, however, in the coming days and weeks. Rafael has started training, and is likely to be available for Tuesday's meeting with Wolves, while the same goes for Wes Brown, who starts training again today. Edwin van der Sar remains out of action, but should return next weekend.

Gary Neville, Jonny Evans and John O'Shea are all still out, with Evans due back within a fortnight and O'Shea likely to be back for Leeds' FA Cup visit.

Despite the continuing problems in defence, Sir Alex has ruled out a move for free agent Sol Campbell, declaring that the former Arsenal and England centre-back is "not a player we're interested in bringing to United."

Vidic to return, good stuff!

Also, quashed the rumors of Sol Campbell joining us that was obviously made up in the media.

Good news all round then, John O'Shea though, long time out with a 'dead leg' innit?

We really could do with Evans back too, so its good that hes coming along well.

Yeah, the O'Shea injury is a bit of a strange one thats for sure. Bit of a shit time (Xmas Period) to have the injuries to the back four though. Anyone know the deal on Brown? Thought he was taken of as a precaution but it seems it was an injury. Poor sod.

Reading this thread depresses me.

Then I suggest not reading it.

Although if my football team hadn't won a trophy since before Elvis died I don't think my main source of football depression would be the vague and often incoherent ramblings of the fans of another team.

Well, obviously he didn't open training everyday with "Uuu zee gabs over zer - 'e iz never guing to ply for ze manchesters" but I imagine it was pretty easy to infer.
