The old Man Utd Thread

Was that a penalty against Carrick btw? Didn't quite see.

Should have been although the player pokes the ball away from goal looking for it but in doing so makes it look like a well timed tackle. If he chips it over Carrick or pulls it back it's a guaranteed pen.

Really saw the best and worst of Nani that half, 2 or 3 stupid runs and then a brilliant cross to set up the goal.

How bad is Wellbeck playing? Jesus, he's shit. You'd think he'd try a bit harder seeing as he's getting his opportunity to claim a more regular place in the squad.

And just to balance things out Kusczak has been amazing. Why Fergie had that spell of putting Foster before him I'll never know*.

*Surely it was to big him up, get his price up while playing for England then offload him to some suckers.

Welbeck continues to disappoint. Other than that a good nite. Crosses into the box from Wolfsburg looked constantly dangerous but the make shift defence exceled. Poor old Nani. The difference between he and Obertan is shocking. Nani looks completely lacking of the ability to take it round a single player. Obertan looks like he can take it round a whole team.

Thought the score slightly flattered us, it could easily have been 2-2, but they missed we went down the other end and made it 3. Remembering the penalty they should have had and the two amazing misses from about a yard out reinforces this, but overall I'm pleased considering what troubles we overcame. Some nice performances, felt the CB's did well considering mainly. I mean Utd go away to the German champions, with a depleted side and win in a game that really meant nothing to us and should have been everything to them. Manager has shown his value again with the result, he baffles at times but this is his true quality.

One thing I wanted to check on as it caused me some frustration. First half it was Evra at LB, Carrick and Fletcher CB with Park RB, yeah? Nani helping out on Evra's side (which I felt he did) and somebody on Parks side? Presumably it was meant to be Gibson or Welbeck, but neither seemed to offer any defence. What further muddied the shebang was Park was so far advanced he was practically right wing... we got opened up so many times down there. Seemed to sort itself when Valencia came on and looked more defined. So, did we play 3 at the back which sort of explains the weakness on the right, or was it a back 4 and Park forget to defend and nobody helped?

---------------------

See that rubbish about Sol Campbell?

I mean it's blatantly bullshit because he can't join 'til January when everybody will be back (though I bet Rio won't be), he's slow and looked past it at Pompey. That and he hasn't played for half a year so can't be remotely fit. It's clearly a slow news day and the agent talking rubbish to force Newcastle/ some Championship side into action.

Right? RIGHT? RIGHT?

I mean the reason Carrick can step in and do a job is because in football today you can't tackle and get stuck in, it's all about reading the game, awareness of space and the benefit of speed to make up for any lapse.

This confused me as well. It seemed like they were playing 3 centre backs and 2 wing backs (Nani and Park). Though, it looked like Fletcher was playing half as a centre back, half as a right back. Park was playing as half a right winger, a quarter wing back and a quarter full back. I know that sounds a bit daft but thats how it looked to me. Until Valencia came on Wolfsburg down the left looked a cosntant threat. I dont think they utilized it as much as they should thankfully. Was truly a crazy formation.

That's the secret of Manchester United's success though, isnt it? No other side has as consistently punished you for missing chances as United have over the last 15-20 years.

The third goal was just perfect counter attacking football. Okay, United got a bit lucky that the Wolfsburg striker took an airshot when he might have scored, but the way defence was turned into attack from that point onwards was sublime. Owen's run was just the man showing his class, how concious was he of staying in his own half before the ball was played? And the extra pass from the defender to the midfielder (I dont recall which two players it was) so the angle of the pass to Owen could be changed was fantastic. Down the Villa we would have just lumped the ball forwards and hoped Gabby got on the end of it.

The result was very flattering really as bowser said. We were on the back foot for large periods (as was expected) and could easily been two or three down before Owen got his first. Saying that on the whole they defended well (aside from occasionally large gaps on the right - where they scored from).

3 goals from 5 shots though for Owen, a couple of them not the hardest to convert, but his positioning was second to none, and he even out-ran a full back over half the pitch to score.

Na, it's all luck, buying refs and bias.

Seriously though, you're absolutely right though I don't think it's just the lethality and speed but the emphasis on attacking football and going for the result in the last minutes that sets us apart. The sheer numbers that get forward is amazing.

Though I think the managers ability to inspire, motivate and cajole performances for such a prolonged period is possibly more important. I don't just mean the manager himself going on for so long, but it's freakish that Giggs the past few years has been as good as ever, Scholes too, are the obvious ones. But when you look at the amount of games some foreign players have played I think it's a real trick in managing to make these players care so much and play like it's their last game for such a prolonged period. That, and rebuilding many teams are the managers greatest qualities.

Looking forward to the weekend? We have an amazing record against you, but it's got to end some time. At times you looked beaten before you even started, probably with that record in mind. I'll never forget that cup tie at the start of the decade where we where losing 2-0 with 10 to go and then Ole and Ruud stepped up.

If Utd can get some back maybe the run can continue, but if I was a Villa player I'd be really looking forward to the game. Sure you lost last year but the majority of the performance should give confidence, especially if we don't have peeps back.
