The old Man Utd Thread

We're doing really well considering the injuries we have, especially at the back. I think it proves how great the coaching staff are at getting the full squad capable of playing a number of systems. Having squad depth is one thing, but having them all know how to play together, and play out of position and still get results is a big achievment.

Yeah, its nice to working away at the goal difference too. 3-0, 1-4 and 0-4 in the last three have certainly helped.

Game against Villa is going to be different story though, they are realy purring along at the moment. We're going to need to get some injuries sorted by then.

If nothing changes before Tuesday, I reckon we'll have Park at right-back, De Laet and Carrick as the centre backs. Evra must be wondering when his time will come... of course we'll have Fletch mopping up in front of this makeshift defence, our attack should keep them plenty busy so I'm not too worried. Should be interesting, anyway.

United’s 19-man squad for the game in Wolfsburg: Tomasz Kuszczak, Ben Foster, Patrice Evra, Oliver Gill, Gabriel Obertan, Magnus Eikrem, Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson, Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Matty James, Darren Fletcher, Ji-sung Park, Anderson, Cameron Stewart, Nani, Oliver Norwood, Michael Owen, Danny Welbeck

Well that is a damn small squad. With only 2 defenders in the traveling party from what I can see.

Fuck that, we should be winning this game. Where are Rooney and Berbatov?

De Laet not on the Champions League squad list or something?

Rested for the big game at the weekend! Winning the group is always nice, but in the grand scheme of things the moment I don't think its a necessity given the situation with injuries.

De Laet isn't registered either, unfortunatly as he'd have been a certain to start.

Its a silly risk to take IMO, fixtures are going to be busier when the Champions League kicks off again, and drawing a tougher team then could result in an early exit. And I doubt risking playing Rooney and/or Berbatov (or at least having them on the bench) would add to the defensive injures we already have. (or at least i hope it wouldn't!).

Either way it looks like we are going to try and park the buss and hit them on the break as they will want a win more than us it seems.

Apparently if CSKA beat Besiktas we will win the group regardless of the result in our game.

How does that work then?

I thought if it was 2-1 to them then the head to head was the same, but we go out on goal difference. If it's 1-0 to them then again 2-2 on both games and anything else like 2-0, 3-0 whatever they have a better head to head. Edit- not out, I mean to 2nd in the group.

Is it something mental to do with us having a better head to head than Beisktas and them beating the Germans?

I think it's becaue if they beat us and CSKA win we are all on 10 points which means instead of head to heads the league placings are worked out as a mini league excluding the Besiktas results (for all teams). It does seem the fairest way of doing it even if it's bit of a nightmare working it all out.

If Wolfsburg beat us and CSKA don't win then we will finish second I think.

Mental. They really do make it up as they go along.

Park and Fletch full back, Evra and Carrick in the middle? Then again they've not included Judas' son for nothing and he's a centre half so maybe he'll get the nod, though I know nothing about him.

If Wolfsburg beat us and CSKA don't win then we will finish second I think.

Yeah, the Russians wouldn't have 10 points and be out, the Germans would have a better head to head like I went on about in the other post.

I think it will be Fletcher-Carrick-Gill-Evra along the back. Dzeko isn't massively quick so i'd rather have some extra height in there. I don't think we'll actually play that defensively, what's the point in inviting attacks onto a decimated defence? I think we'll play quite attacking and try and make use of the extra attacking ability some of the defensive stand-ins will have.
