The old Man Utd Thread

I am not basing my opinion of Welbeck on last night's performance, I'm going on every game I've seen him play from last season and this. Welbeck's goals have come against Stoke, Southampton, Derby, Wolves and Barnsley, not exactly top class opposition, and bar a couple of good strikes he has been largely wasteful. He doesn't have great movement, his control isn't the greatest, his decision making can be poor and he generally gives off an aura of clumsiness. At best he can aspire to be a new Paolo Wanchope, all gangly and awkward, but Wanchope was never good enough to play for Utd.

With your assessment then I'm guessing you haven't seen him that much at all. Decision making aside, you haven't at all described Welbeck. Lets not forget that ge's only just turned 19 years of age.

Actually you're probably right - he's shit.

Regards Welbeck, I really cant see him ever being a Utd first teamer. I am under no illusions that I may be talking shite but I have been disappointed with him anytime I have saw him play. He holds onto the ball far too long and allows the opposition to close down runs and players. He thinks he's far better than he is. As I say, he thinks he's Theirry (cheat) Henry, he's not even David Healy at the minute. Summed up last night when he tried one of Henry's (cheat) trademark curls using the inside of his right foot from the left. Welbeck connected with the ball on the side of his heel and it tamely hit a defender.

He's young and I hope he proves me wrong. He could do a Fletcher but I think it's more likely he'll do a Richardson.

LOL, just because he went to curl one into the far post doesn't mean he thinks he's better than what he is, or the next Henry. More so just because he scuffed it doesn't mean he's shit.

What about the one he did curl in to the corner last season against Derby in the one of the cups which Henry would have been proud of? Fantastic goal that was.

I'm quietly confident he'll prove you wrong too :(

What the hell do some of you watch to base those ridiculous statements on!? Wellbeck is shit? Nope. His movement and interplay is far superior to Macheda's. Kiko, as you call him, only ever passes the ball when he's been forced to run into his own half. Seriously, he has potential, but right now seems to think he's Ronaldo or something! Liking Obertan, could see him going very far once he gets regular 1st team action, his foot rolls make me wanna go and fuck people up on FIFA. Gibson I like as well. Wasn't great against Besiktas, but you can see the brain is there. Anderson seems to have gone backwards. I used to watch his passes find no-one and go 'make the run!!! that ball was sick' now I find myself thinking 'who the fuck was that ever gonna find?' on a regular.

EDIT: Oh yeah... Scholes gets it, fuckin legend.

I just watched this after recording on Sky Sports last night and I'm amazed we managed to win so convincingly. We were dire for the entire first half and big periods at the start of the second. I'm really surprised Pompey didn't score more goals.

One thing I have increasingly been noticing though is that Vidic really is looking out of sorts at the moment. He was poor again yesterday. What's wrong with him? Is it just a dip in form? Not being partnered with Rio? Got his mind on moving?

I don't know what's wrong, but he's looking extremely vulnerable and a shadow of his former self.

That Rooney lad is pretty good at penalties ain't he!

Also, pretty impressed with Valencia yesterday. Really starting to run at the defences now.

Aaaaalso, Evra is fucking ace!

I dunno was it really though? Vidic had a chunk of his shirt. I no if it was outside the box it would be a free kick.

By the letter of the law it is a penalty but when you see it go un-punished in every other game the inconsistency is a bit frustrating.

I think both Welbeck and Macheda will do well, part of the problem is they end up playing in games against weaker opposition that play with as many people behind the ball as possible. Given a start in a more open game I would expect both of them to do much better. Macheda has shown some lovely footwork when he has played and Ferguson has said a few times he isone of the most natural finishers in the team. Hopefully he'll get a game against Spurs on Tuesday. To be honest i'm not sure if Gibson will still be at United nextyear and possibly even January. He'll make a decent premiership player but I just don't think he'll make it at United. When you look at the other players he is competing with, including those coming up through the reserves I just don't see where he will fit in. Anderson was crap in that match but if I were to guess I reckon Ferguson just told him to sit back and let Gibson play hisgame rather than vice versa.

He's had a few ropey games but our defense nearly always looks terrible when Neville plays. He's always 20 yards behind the left back meaning the two centre backs have to stay further back and it leaves a massive hole in front of Vidic. Plus opposition players know they can press neville with no fear ofhim going past them.

Aaaaalso, Evra is fucking ace!

Easily our best left back since Irwin () and an absolute bargain at £5 million (ish). Should go down as one of Ferguson's best ever buys.

He's discovered this thing called doubt, which he had not previously felt. It's all Torres' fault, basically.

Vidic being shit as nothing to do with Neville really, you just don't like Neville no more! ;). Neville wasn't too bad against Pompey in all fairness, however I thought Brown and Vidic were a bit shit at times.

All this talk of Vidic going as got me thinking that maybe there is something in the rumor. Might even explain his patchy performances so far. The Vidic of last season will be almost impossible to replace, the Vidic of this season not so difficult. I feel if a decent offer comes in we might well just be losing Vidic next year :(

I expect it's just generic rumour mill stuff but we've been linked with Micah Richards today. He's been really poor for City but if you look at how bad Hughes has managed to make the entire defense i'm not sure that Richards' form can be criticised too much. If he doesn't cost too mush I reckon it might be worth a punt, if he can recapture some of the potential he showed a few years ago Evans/Richards could be a hell of a CB pairing.

I don't like seeing Richards at CB. He's too prone to lapses which are punished a lot more than when he's at RB. He could be one of the best RBs in the world one day if he is developed as one properly, out wide his pace usually get's him out of trouble when he does get caught out of position, and he's so quick and powerful, and good on the ball, for a defender, that I think he's wasted as a CB.

I could never understand why he wanted to play as center back for City, when he broke through a couple of years back and got into the England squad he was looking like a great prospect for the future as a right back. Said in this thread more than a few times that we should have a go at signing him. Although this last year or so hes been pretty terrible on the whole for City. Maybe its time he had a go on the flank again.
