The old Man Utd Thread

Well that was pretty poor. Thought a few players came out of that having done well, Obertan, Macheda and Park specifically.

Every time I see Neville in the team I want to throw hot fat in my eyes, it's like the entire corner of the pitch is made of quicksand when he's at RB. The midfield of Anderson and Gibson was spectacularly turgid which is pretty much what I expected, 2 players basically in positional limbo neither going completely forward or completely tracking back. Unfortunate goal for Foster, I though his distribution was decent tonight.

This match also highlighted how lacking we are in quality when it comes to dead ball situations.

I thought Welbeck was poor tonight. He thinks he's Henry (cheat) and is far too stingy with the ball. He and Macheda didnt work well as a partnership and their movement left a lot to be desired. Obertan was good. Very promising. I think his final ball would have been better with Rooney or Berba in there. He needed a striker that knows what area to attack as opposed to two who looked glued to the defenders.

In the first half Gibson was pretty good. Bursting forward from midfield a good bit. Second half the whole team stagnated especially the midfield duo. Park done well enough but I get frustrated with him coming in field too much and clogging the middle. It's ok if Evra is bombing down the left but Rafael on the wrong flank couldnt do the same. The whole attack then gets bogged down. For all the possession Rustu only really had to make 2 saves in the 2nd half.

Some of the passing was shocking and Utd really looked a bit clueless in the final third.

Was exceeding dubious about Obertan before he signed. I mean the signs weren't good. For starters I'd never heard of him, he was signed out of nowhere after not getting a game at his own club and Larry White said he was shocked at the move. Him looking scarily like 50p head Silvestre was perhaps the most damning thing, well besides being injured.

But he's an exciting lad, isn't he? Maybe it's a bit early, but besides the Twins at fullback probably the most likely to make the first team of last nights players. He's maybe missing that last bit of class/ composure/ experience when it's the crucial moment but he's quick, quite strong and not afraid to get stuck in. Brave and will take people on, but needs to work on his crossing. Getting whacked doesn't seem to effect him as much as other wingers we have which is a big plus... I really, really like him now.

ABout the only plus of a really boring, shitty match really. Anderson is going backwards, I thought Gibson was horrific short of one run that he fucked up at the end anyhow, felt them two being so slow and ponderous was a large part of why we never got going. Overall though it's a great big meh, the game, the competition, the performance. Wonder if he'll play a stronger team against the Germans and try to win the group, the manager didn't give much away when asked. I'd of thought that playing a stronger team against a weak side at home is more likely to get a result than in Germany, but we should get a draw either way.

Big thumbs up to the fans though. Booing the lad who was pissing blood from his head was classy, though I'll maybe give them the benefit of the doubt as that lot were diving and rolling around wasting time, maybe they didn't realise he was cut. Not singing, evacuating the stadium like there was a bomb scare with extra time not even announced and, above all things and best of all, booing the team off... terrific.

After we went a goal down the team got really anxious I thought and they maybe tried too hard. Before that goal though we'd opened them up in wide area's with some lovely interplay from Kiko, Welbeck and Obertan. Obertan was exciting to watch, if a bit wasteful at times. I'm sure we'll see more of him in the coming weeks; most likely against Spurs in the CC.

The midfield did a job in getting a hold of the ball but didn't really do much with it once they had it, we had posession for large parts of the game and it was heavily in our favor. Still not convinced by Gibson though, and it pisses me off how much he looks to shoot all the time.

Brown was brilliant too, don't think he put a foot wrong in the whole 90 minutes.

Overall it's a good experience for the younger players and I'm sure they'll take a lot from it. Welbeck is going to be some player too, he's got bags of potential I just hope he can fulfill it.

I really don't see it. Nothing he has ever done has excited me in the slightest. I don't understand where any love was coming from. My cousin, who I watched the game with, said the same thing to me last night and every time Welbeck got the ball, and inevitably lost it, I just looked round at him in a questioning fashion. By the end of the match he wasn't feeling the love for him either. Why he was moved to the wing when Owen came on I don't know. It should have been a straight swap.

Neville needs to be put out of his misery, he was crap last night. When Evra came on we should have switched Rafael to right back and taken Nev off. I love the man, he has been a great servent, but he is well past it now. And what the hell was he doing taking a corner?!

I'm disappointed to have lost our home European record, but we dominated a game with our second string. We didn't deserve to lose, but we did and Fergie must realise that if we want to ensure top spot we must not play the same team again.

I think he looks more like a weirdly deformed caricature of Thierry Henry!

Of the kids that played last night (excluding Rafael), I think he's the only one that looks like he's got potential. All the others are continuing to look shite.

I thought Wellbeck did really good last night, his movement was brilliant, and when he was shifted to the right wing he adopted his defensive duties quite well. Obertan was good in parts, but as the clock ticked down he started to lose composure on the ball and was making silly challenges.

I feel for Nani, I still like him as a player. Hopefully - whether he stays or goes - he can grow into the promising player that many expect of him.

Welbeck didn't even understand he was on a football pitch. He was truly awful. Looking at SkySports ratings of the game last night, looks like the critics and public agree with me. The critics gave him a 5 (Gibson got a 4 and Neville and Rafael a 5 also) and the public have rated him the worst bar Foster.

2 things about those ratings though. Rafael didn't deserve to be lumped in with the dire Welbeck and Neville. And Foster didn't put a foot wrong, there was absolutely nothing he could do about the goal.

But my point still stands...Welbeck is shit! :D

Are you including Anderson as a kid?

No, I don't mind Anderson actually. He can be pretty good, if a bit inconsistent.

It was Gibson, Macheda & Wellbeck I wasn't convinced by.

So you've based your opinion on his performance last night? I've been watching Welbeck now for about 18 months and I'll be very very shocked if he doesn't make it at Manchester United.

I can't believe he's not excited you either. He's scored some quality goals for the first team, which have been exciting to watch. Last night wasn't his best but you could still see what he's capable of in my opinion. He found space well drifting out wide or dropping deep and showed good touch.

Apart from Obertan, he looked the most threatening going forward. He's only gone 19 today and I think he'll mature into a quality player. I hope to see more of him and hopefully he can push on and show you how good he really is. I'm confident he will.

James, I think Nani still got a part to play. SAF is always patient with his players, look at Fletch, people were calling for his head for years. Myself included at times and he stuck with him and we're seeing the benefit of that now.

His confidence is at an all time low really. Everyone is excited by Obertan at the moment, and rightly so. However had that been Nani playing last night being as wasteful as Obertan was at times they'd be a lot of people slating Nani. He does get a rough ride from our fans.

If he does move on from United, I'm sure we'll see a different player from the one we've seen at United. He looks a different player for Portugal for example.

Each to their own, but even if I was a Man Utd fan I don't think I'd want any of the players sucking me off.

I am not basing my opinion of Welbeck on last night's performance, I'm going on every game I've seen him play from last season and this. Welbeck's goals have come against Stoke, Southampton, Derby, Wolves and Barnsley, not exactly top class opposition, and bar a couple of good strikes he has been largely wasteful. He doesn't have great movement, his control isn't the greatest, his decision making can be poor and he generally gives off an aura of clumsiness. At best he can aspire to be a new Paolo Wanchope, all gangly and awkward, but Wanchope was never good enough to play for Utd.

He's still awkward because he's 6' 1" and 19. He doesn't have the build to match his frame, yet. Plus he's out on the wing most of the time, which will develop his ability to read the game, and play in support but I want to see him in the middle eventually. I like the touch he's shown, and he does seem smart, although yeah he needs more experience to turn this into an end product.
