The old Man Utd Thread

Obertan looked really sharp- the couple of misses aside it was a pretty promising league début. There's certainly the potential for something special there.

He showed more potential than Nani when he came on despite fluffing his lines in the box. This really should be Nani's last season if he keeps performing this bad.

Are you lot watching a different team than me? Yet again I was there and I felt it was another shitty performance.

I don't know, sometimes it seems like the desire's there, but our finishing is woeful or, like today, it seems like they're simply not in the mood for it, but an easy win will do.

Why aren't we destroying teams and having fun, which I felt we could have today? It just seems like a massive struggle to get things moving at the moment and I don't really understand why.

Needless to say, I'm not happy. A win's a win, I know, but Chelsea, and even Arsenal, have got a lot more drive than us this season, therefore I predict we'll finish 3rd in the league, 2nd at best.

Watching our lucky start to the season fade away, I'm getting more inclined to agreeing with Sith!

It would be dull to point out that we always start going about the business of fucking shit up after Christmas, but there it is. Much will depend on the outcome of next week's head-to-head, yes, but with Chelsea handicapped in at least one way in the new year, winning the league is going to be like stealing middle-aged couples from a yacht.

I don't know how our 'lucky start' to the season has 'faded away'. We're still competing on all fronts by playing at a canter (and with both of the first-choice centre-backs missing yesterday). After failing to land any big fish in the summer transfer market, this was supposed to be a transitional season anyway. My expectations have been more than met.

In even more positive news, it is reported that Sir Alex is to offer Nani a new four-year contract.

Even though Waddle did say a load of nonsense, I agree with him the fact that Man Utd have played with a slower tempo for the last season or so hence them not destroying teams as often as they did. Last season they won the league, but they grinded out results most the times then outplaying the opponents. Compare to 06/07 and 07/08 where they basically destroyed most teams they played. Against teams that keep possession very well like Liverpool and Arsenal they struggled this season, and when Fletcher is not around they don't have someone who can do his job.

I remember when every game pretty much had these explosive breaks where off a corner at their own goal the entire team would just tear down the pitch and Cole or Yorke would score off an easy one two.

That still happened in the Rooney Ronaldo days, but mainly because of those twos immense pace and dribbling skill, and it was certainly not a team effort.

These days it seems to be the entire team camping in the final third just crossing the ball in, collecting it off a defensive clearence, then crossing it again.

What they need is pace down the middle to balance the wings, and a central partnership between Rooney and Owen. It's not going to happen on current evidence.

I don't think it's a lack of pace in midfield as none of them are slow (Scholes aside) it is that for the last two seasons our central midfield has been forced to cover for Ronaldo in what was essentially a 4-3-3 formation so we now have to adjust to a more conventional 4-4-2 where the midfielders need to get up in support of the strikers when the wingers are attacking out wide.

I think a lot of it (especially against Liverpool last week) is the lack of having a defensive midfielder. When we have both Fletcher and Hargreaves fit (or at least one of them for each game) then we will play a lot better.

As DC07 pointed out we are always shit at the start of the start of the season anyway, the difference last year was that barring a major defensive effort it continued all the way through.

Ever the optimist eh :D

Went yesterday for the first time in a while, and wasn't that impressed. Obertan looked promising when he came on, but there was a massive lack of desire and urgency all over the pitch. The first 30 minutes were some of the most boring I've ever seen watching United.

As I though it wasn't much different to this blog for those who don't want to listen to the podcast. Ignore the last paragraph mind :P

I think Anderson suffered somehwat from his own performances when thrown into central midfield, not that they were bad, quite the opposite in fact. Like Carrick I think he has also suffered from the inconsistancy in midfield and when Fletcher and Hargreaves have been injured he often plays the defensive role simply because he is more athletic, stronger and more comfortable on the ball. Given a run in midfield with Hargreaves or Fletcher I suspect we'll see a far more attacking Anderson and with any luck he might finally get the ball on target now and again. It's worth remembering he is still only 20 though!

Anyway, if CSKA play tomorrow like they did in Russia then it should be a relatively easy win, even with what looks like a relative 'B' team. Would be nice to see Obertan again too.

We've also been linked with Villa again this week. I really can't see it happening (Silva maybe) but interesting still as it looks like he will be for sale.

Quiet news week? Surprised they had time for that lie, thought they were preoccupied with slating the manager and Ferdinand.

If we sign anybody from Valencia it should be Mata BTW, rather than somebody whose inferior to Rooney and would surely only get in his way in Silva.

I felt for them there, and the coach. They deserved a victory. They lost their confidence after we pulled it back to 2-3 mind, and despite having all the commitment in the world they couldn't hang on. Fate will have us believe commitment is enough, but then again he's a fucking muppet.

We were pretty fucking bad though, and the entirely different squad we field at the weekend are gonna have to be a lot better if we want a result.

We always look so much better when we just go for it. I hate this pedestrian passionless crap we've been perfecting for the past season and a half until we're backed into a corner.

Yep, we always seem to play better once we go behind, which obvisously isn't what we want to be doing. For whatever reason we've lost the ability to put teams to the sword and just demolish them like Chelsea seem to be doing at the moment. I don't know if SAF is trying to make us play this slow or if the players just lack the oomph until they are 3-1 down and looking like muppets.

When did I ever say commitment is all you need. Are you dyslexic or something, because you 'mis-read' every post I make.

And you wanna watch the name calling or I'll turn up at your next World of Warcraft convention and bitchslap you.
