What's the deal with Rio Ferdinand at the moment anyway?

I dont follow Manchester United that closely, but he has missed something like 25 of the last 50 games with a back injury hasn't he? He seems to have made some uncharacteristic errors in the games he has played recently too. Is he on the decline now? He is 31 next month and that usually the kind of age where defenders are at their absolute peak. Now I am slightly concerned about his form and fitness going into the 2010 world cup. I was kinda banking on him being our best defender again.

Evans and Vidic has been our most consistent partnership for a while now. Ferdinand, when fit and focused, is clearly one of the best defenders in the world. We rarely have such luck, though.

Welbeck's 18, and doesn't suit the wing IMO. Give him some time.

Still a shit result.

On a weekend where our two closest rivals are going head to head we should've been taking 3 points as it's likely that they both could drop points.

I don't think we played bad enough to lose the match but that was still a bit too close for my liking.

Evans is our best central defender at the moment and Fergie hinted before the Wolfsburg game he was unlucky not to have played more. I'd happily take him over Vidic or Ferdinand the way those two are playing though.

I thought Wellbeck did well, linked up play and in the first half at least was infinitely better than Nani. The most frustrating thing with Nani is that in the second half he began to play more directly and actually started to look good. Won't last mind.

How many more chances does Foster get? I have to say that was pretty much it from me. Taibi got shipped off for less.

Berbatov's goal was beautiful though!

Lucky.

Our wings are diabolical. How did we go from having world class players like Ronaldo and Beckham to Nani and Wellbeck? Not that I have anything against Wellback but he's young, inexperienced and isn't even a proper winger. It says it all that, when chasing the game, we resorted to bringing on bloody Carrick and Valencia.

Still, it seems mean to pick on them when pretty much everyone was terrible.

Let's all suggest a decent formation for the next few games, shall we?

           Berbatov

         Rooney

Park                  Valencia

        Anderson

           Fletcher

Evra                     Rafael

        Vidic  Evans

          Kuszczak

I think we have to have attacking full-backs on both sides. Yeah, Ronaldo could terrorise teams on his own, even if they were sitting deep. Realistically, we can't expect any of our current wingers to do that though. Whoever's on the left gets Evra's help, but O'Shea or Neville aren't great. We need Evans back in the side too I feel; he's an excellent young centre-back, and if our other choices lack form or fitness, we shouldn't hesitate to use him. I haven't actually seen the game, but this is just musings on why we have been a bit tame recently.

Both Rooney and Fletcher were poor today (as was Scholes) so it's not fair to blame it all on the usual suspects. I though Wellbeck did better than Nani, with the added bonus he sometimes actually passes when bringing the ball off the wing. Rafael should be fit soon but O'Shea has done pretty well, wasn't it his cross that setup Berbatov's goal?

I also thought Anderson did well in the second half, was much more of a driving force than Scholes in the first.

Completely agree on Evans as per my previous post. I actually think he'll be our next captain, and I don't think that will be too far away.

I said the other week that I'm of the opinion that he's going the way of Garry Pallister. He's not been out with a back injury of late, it's other minor niggles like calf, thigh and groin... think it's like December was the last time it was officially his back. But, yeah, Pally- basically the back injury led to a million minor niggles that he never recovered from and the theory was he was throwing other things by trying to do stuff differently to protect his back.

Regarding the performance, it's all good and well slating easy targets like Wellbeck and Nani, even if the latter is a total waster. You have to ask just what the manager is playing at in never playing the same side, does he really think swapping near enough the entire midfield every week is a good idea. A thousand wingers at the club, so lets play a striker out of position was my favourite, probably. Well, besides the total contempt we met Sunderland with today ignoring their form this season and the fact for the last few years at home we've struggled against them.

Still, a point gained is more than we deserved after the worst performance for years, could have even stole it at the end.

Yeah, this is the worst thing, with a stronger team selection it may have been avoidable. They're an established premier league side, we shouldn't underestimate the capability of teams like them and Bolton, Fulham or Wigan to embarrass you, even at home.

Foster. LOL. Why the fuck he keeps playing ahead of Kuskzac who always performs professionally and seems much more assured of himself, is beyond me.

Careless team selection by Ferguson against a Sunderland side who have started really well and have two in form strikers, not to mention are progressively gelling as a team.

Meh... incredibly disappointing.

To drop him after his first mistake (this season) would have destryed his confidence making him even more useless thus leaving us with only one keeper with any experience. The problem with Kuszack is that his distribution is utterly woeful, he never seems to be able to get the ball out quickly or kick it with any accuracy. As it stands though i'd rather that than the calamity goalkeeping that has now cost us points.

Believe me, this has been a bugbear of mine for ages. He needs to pick a midfield and stick to it. I've been saying this for ages. He needs to keep Berbatov in the team and stop leaving him on the bench for random games. Anderson has been looking pretty decent recently and he's probably the best central midfielder we have in terms of picking up the ball and driving it into the opposition's half. Why not stick with him and Fletcher, our two best midfielders recently (even though Fletcher was poor today) for a while. I can understand resting Giggs and Park is injured, but why play Wellbeck out of position? Why not just play Valencia. I don't have a clue what he's playing at with his team selections but it's really starting to piss me off. Imo the best performances of recent times was in the 2006-2007 season when our midfield was practically nailed on as Giggs, Scholes, Carrick and Ronaldo. Arguably there was too little rotation that season because I remember us flagging near the end of that season but his tinkering nowadays is just bordering on laughable.

But still, the sad truth is that Giggs and Evra are better wingers than any of our current lot. And we can't play Giggs every game, and it's incredibly obvious how much we miss him when he doesn't play, and Evra is a defender ;) I'm frustrated with the whole thing to be honest.

You know you are spoiled when your club has won three Premiership titles on the spin, reached the last two Champions League finals and won nine of their last ten games, yet you still feel frustrated by them. ;)

Yeah but to be honest, last season we played really badly for most of it so it felt hollow. And this season we've had quite a few slices of luck already (Arsenal, Man City, Sunderland). Whatever our successes, our performances and squad have been getting progressively and noticeably weaker. But yes, of course I appreciate that compared to almost any other club we're still hugely successful but it's a case of differing expectations and I don't think what is said in here is any different to what gets said in the other 'big 4' football threads.

I haven't read any comments from today yet, as I've only just got home from the match, but does anyone still want to challenge me on my point that Foster is absolute dogshit? I mean really poor. I wouldn't even be happy if he played for my Rochdale boys. Anyone?

Nah, didn't think so.

My god, the sooner we ship him out the better. Yet another assured display. Jesus.

By the way, what the fuck was the team selection about today? Since when has Danny been a winger? The boy's not even a very good striker.
