The old Man Utd Thread

Whenever he gives interviews you can always tell he's thinking about something else.

Anyway, was a good performance in the end. Shame we had to wait for them to score to really put the effort in but there was some really lovely play at times. Nice to see Carrick put in a decent performance too.

Carrick's passing was the minimum level required, just no vision at all, until the last 20 minutes or so where he seemed like his old self. He didn't press or tackle too much either. Berbatov and Rooney were both great. Giggs had flashes, but I think this was one game too many for him. Valencia didn't try to take the ball with him once in the first half, even though he showed he can do it in the second. He's strong and can shield the ball, so even if he doesn't pass a man, he can still keep the ball. I've no idea why he doesn't try a stretch teams like this more often.

I think that just about covers it.

He also said "well done" to the interviewer after receiving that exact complement.

Fergie always says 'well done' to the interviewer at the end, don't you watch Sky Sports?

Anyway as for the match, did what we needed to do. Valencia is looking like a waste of money so far. What's that, 9 games so far and produced fuck all? Very poor. And although he didn't really have that much to do Kusczak looks far more assred in goal than Foster ever does.

Berbatov did not have that great a game. He did a few fancy passes and helped with the final goal, but he was also poor off the break, conceeded possesion too much, was off side too much, and did not make anything of a bunch of chances he had on goal. For me he is just not good enough, even on a relatively good day like today.

And Valencia - he is not going to be in a man u shirt next season. At a push, in a shell suit on the subs bench, but no way on the field. He simply cannot shake defenders. Not even close.

Its the first time I've seen him say it purely through not seeing him interviewed that often.

I cant believe people think Berbatov isnt good enough for Utd. I'm completely happy seeing his name on the team sheet. I thought maybe I was missing something last night through the Budvars so had a quick look on the various news sites to see what they have said about his performance.

BBC: "His replacement, Dimitar Berbatov, had a dramatic impact on proceedings, immediately enlivening United with his clever touches and visionary passing."

Guardian: "It was usually Berbatov who had them flailing"

Times 'graphic': here

Just some snippets. There isnt any part of me that thinks he isnt good enough for Utd. Frustrating at times but awe-inspiring in equal measure.

My trouble with Berbatov is that he looks amazing when things are going well and we are outplaying teams. Gorgeous little flicks and the ball just sticking to him with what looks like little to no effort.

However, when we are struggling he just doesn't look like he'll win the match for us - I dunno maybe RBC will come along and state how many times he got Spurs out of a hole. I just haven't really seen that since he has been with us.

Valencia hasn't been with us that long so I'm prepared to give him more time before I start calling for his head  Fletcher was in that category a few seasons ago and look at him now!

It's a shame our team came up with the goods and battled against bad decisions from the officials to go on and win the match. I was looking forward to getting to moan about referees and conspiracy theories and making excuses like Liverpool and City supporters. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to forget about the away team getting given everything at Old Trafford and wait till the next time we get a bit of luck before the debate can continue.

It's also disappointing for Owen, but it matters little to the team. Always good to have Macheda getting more opportunities.

Giggsy isn't far off the season of his life in terms of end product. I think he's about to displace Cantona as my all-time favourite footballing idol.

I didn't think Valencia was particularly bad, he made some good runs, linked up well with Rooney, Berbatov, Giggs and Anderson and got into some good positions surely having the vision to link up effectively is a positive sign?

I thought Anderson had a good one last night too, seemed to be going forward a lot more than previously and with a lot more confidence

Fletcher has already said that with Ronaldo leaving it means players aren't having to hold back covering the gaps he left.

I thought Valencia was quite good yesterday, the problem is we haven't played with proper wingers for a while now. I can't rememeber many times last season when our centre mifielders would gamble on a ball coming into the box and make a late run, when the team get used to Valencia out on the wing I think we'll see a lot more of it.

Anderson showed a lot of strength in midfield yesterday, didn't lose the ball when in posession and his passing was a mix of the brilliant and decidedly average. The ball he looped over the defence for Rooney in the first half was Scholes all over, at least if Rooney had carried on his run anyway.

What can you say about Giggs? Everybody says you can't rely on a 35 year old much longer but when he is playing this well why worry about it? I loved it after the game when the interviewer told him he'd scored is 150th goal for United and he looked like he couldn't give a shit. The mans drive for success is incredible.

I'm undecided on Valencia. He can cross the ball and he can beat his man, so who could ask for more?

The problem is that he's not ronaldo, and he's not as direct but he could still improve.

One thing andy townsend said last night was that perhaps he's just not used to having the space and time he has been getting

I know what you mean, he's shown in fits and spurts that he's more than capable of beating his man and producing a good final ball. He just hasn't done it enough and I think the main reason is he needs to get used to the team and find his confidence and belief in himself. I think he'll come good though and as fans we'll just have to patient.

He just needs a bit of time once he's got his first goal, and/or a few more assists then that can only improve his confidence
