The old Man Utd Thread

Yeah fair enough, after I had a moan he decided to play well. Maybe I should do that every game!

It's just overall I don't see him as good enough to be our first choice keeper. He still seems massively nervous most of the time, his positioning lets him down and he's really inconsistent.

I know everyone keeps banging on like he's the best keeper in the world, but I just don't see it. I'll be happy to be proved wrong though.

He looked like the most confident guy in the world, until that alcoholic-faced twat McClaren set him back 2 years!

This is shit. What's the point of trying to get Berbatov and Roomey to form a partnership when we just stick Rooney up front on his own in the big games. Also Nani isn't fit to lick Giggs boots.

Yes. If we need to be defensive, let Rooney withdraw and Berbatov stay up, who as we all know holds the ball up beautifully. He releases it to a player advancing from midfield, and we have a break on. Done.

*edit*

I realise that I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about, but is a football thread if not tactical musings?

Boring game but it was exactly what needed to be done. No point sending the team out to press and play a high temp game in what looked like a pretty hot stadium. We were never really in danger, Valencia had his best game in a United shirt and we got 3 points in what is a tricky awayy fixture withough having to get out of 2nd gear.

Tbh, I thought Valencia did ok but the final ball from himself and Nani was pretty poor. Im sure it was hot but the midfield looked a bit sluggish I thought. Utd were more menacing when they reverted to 4-4-2. You obviously play the opposition but at times Besiktas were able to breeze through midfield unopposed.

Still not gonna be all doom and gloom. A draw wouldnt have been too bad. A win as phresh said, pretty much at a canter, is a great result.

Why is that? The tactics you've mentioned make waaaay more sense than the bollocks Fergie employs in Europe these days.

The tactics he has employed 'in general' have got us to two finals on the trot so they can't be doing that bad.

The tactics he employed today were to simply get us through the game without expending too much effort, resting some players for Sunday and getting 3 points if possible. With the quality of the CL league stages so poor these days you can take as much from these games as you can a Carling Cup game sometimes.

The thing is, we almost always look better when we switch to 4-4-2. Besiktas looked extremely lacking in quality going forward I thought, so did we really need 3 central midfielders and Rooney isolated again? Burnley, Arsenal, Besiktas... all had Berbatov dropped and Rooney struggling on his own and yet Fergie continues to go on about the importance of Rooney and Berbatov forging a partnership. Why spend 30 million on a forward if you're going to drop him for every tough game or away game in europe, or sometimes just bloody random games because you're terrified of not going out with a 4-5-1? Without a Ronaldo in the team 4-5-1 suddenly seems much less viable this season than it has in the past.

Anyway Valencia did quite well today although the final delivery from him wasn't great. Still not at all convinced about Nani. Didn't seem to do much but run into trouble repeatedly. Compare him to someone like Giggs and he's completely witless. The scary thing is that, even though they're close to retirement, Giggs and Scholes are both far better creatively than any of our other midfielders.

If you draw away and win at home you qualify, with the overwhelmingly strong chance you'll top the group.

I think too much is being read into last nights game. I'm fully aware of the managers caution, or negativity, when facing anyone of quality away from home.

That said, last night was turgid because there's a bigger game at the weekend and we're going to qualify whatever the performance or outcome of last night. The group stages are weighted so heavily towards leading teams that it's almost fixed- this really isn't a Champions League, it's a commercial exercise that sees weaker teams knocked out like the fodder they are by half hearted, disinterested clubs.

The small clubs can never get better as they're guaranteed to get drawn against better teams with the way the draw is done, and it's exaggerated by the fact that the third and fourth best English side get tiered higher than smaller nations champions. It should be straight knock out from a none tiered draw, but there's no way on earth that'll happen for obvious reasons.

I personally didn't give a shit about last nights game and haven't done about the CL Groups for ages. Personally don't really expect the manager or players to feel too differently, either. Well, Rooney apart, he gives a fuck. It's kinda shitty on the traveling fans, but fans needs have long since been deemed irrelevant.

Quite probably more interested in seeing the kids play Wolves in the League Cup actually, will be good to see more trafficked, enslaved youths than last nights pre season friendly.
