The old Man Utd Thread

I think Spurs were part of the reason we were so good today. They played a really attacking game (as usual) allowing us to match them for pace and tempo. The match was so open and there was so many silly errors, the scoreline could have been anything really.

However I think when we come up against teams without that mentality, teams who don't care about winning, rather their aim is to not lose, that we'll struggle. We are still missing that spark in midfield that will break teams down.

As much as Scholes was superb today (before the sending off) he wont be playing every week and his influence over the course of a season is lessening every year.

Only saw the second half, great by Foster from Jenas and lovely goal by Rooney. Going to 10 men seemed to really spur us on, some great play from Fletcher today who is really come on in the last season, kinda thought he was getting the Scottish vote from Fergie in the beginning despite being talented, now fully deserves a place in the midfield, dunno whats gonna happen whne Hargreaves comes back as our centre midfield is pretty stacked at the minute with Fletch, Carrick, Anderson, Hargreaves, Scholes and Gibson on the fringe.

He is in the CL squad at the expense of some fit players and is expected back training in a couple of weeks so I don't see any reason why he won't play again.

Anyway, excellent game today. The inclusion of Anderson showed again why Ferguson is one of the best, if not the best, man managers in the league. Anderson had an excellent game for the reserves and to be picked in the centre ahead of Carrick and when Fletcher or Giggs could just as easily be put there was a brilliant decision.

Thought Foster had a great game, you can't blame him for the Defoe goal as Ferdinand should have done far better. Games are coming thick and fast now, next weekend will be a big test.

Vidic was at fault for the Defoe goal, really shit header. Foster really couldn't do a thing about it - can't imagine it's easy reading where an overhead kick is going to go. Overall foster was great, that save from jenas was immense and he also looked comfortable with his kicking.

Giggs was outstanding.

They were all great yesterday, I thought Foster was really good too, made some ace saves. not sure what jon1 is getting at saying he is shit?

Into the news though: looks like Adebayor will maybe get a ban for at least one of his terrible behaviors yesterday, combined with the fact that Robinho is supposedly out for 2-3 weeks, Santa Cruz isn't quite back yet and Tevez might not be back by next Sunday, we might not see and of their 'galactico' strikers at OT. :(

I know we all like to have a little moan about our midfield but this fact from the guardian's minute-by-minute puts it into some sort of context

when Rooney scored a hat-trick on debut, against Fenerbahce, the midfield was Bellion, Djemba-Djemba, Kleberson and Giggs!

Those were the days...

He is, and it would seem that Sir Alex is confident that he's going to come back stronger than when he first joined. Bizarre to suggest at this stage that he won't be playing again.

I thought the same. He played like he had a point to prove. The goal aside I thought his general play was good too, he looked fit, sharp and hungry. Looks like the spell out of the team was just the kick up the arse he needed!

Foster had no chance what so ever for the goal. Defoe was only 8 yards out (if that) and the only way he'd have saved that effort was if Defoe had hit Foster! Can't really blame Rio either if I'm honest. The fault as to lie with Vidic on this one for me. For what ever reason he's headed it back into the danger area, should have put it for a corner in hindsight.

What a cracking game of football!

Defoes goal was just an awesome goal, no more no less.

As for Giggs, he played great and for him to have 17 years in the top flight itself would be amazing, but to do it at one club AND that club to be the most dominant team probably ever, other than Liverpool at their height, is truely mind boggling. He should be given the freedom of Manchester, a knighthood and made king of the World.

Apparently Anderson asked to play in the reserves which is pretty impressive of him.

I can't find the interview now but it was from a few days ago on the official website and he was saying how he enjoyed the International breaks as it gives hima chance to work on his conditioning and skills. You've got to admire the mans drive! There have been better players at the club and in the PL but I don't think there has been a player in this country, and possibly the world, who has maintained such a consistently high level of performance over such a length of time. It's not like he looks like giving up anytime soon either!

Yeah fair enough, after I had a moan he decided to play well. Maybe I should do that every game!

It's just overall I don't see him as good enough to be our first choice keeper. He still seems massively nervous most of the time, his positioning lets him down and he's really inconsistent.

I know everyone keeps banging on like he's the best keeper in the world, but I just don't see it. I'll be happy to be proved wrong though.

To be fair, he has had a couple of moments where a :( suits.

But then he's not played all that much for us in fairness, or for anyone in the last year for that matter. He's bound to be little rusty. not to mention he's played with 5 different back fours in the last five games which doesn't help at all.

He's shown character to come back form his mistakes/nervousness and in the last two games he's made some crucial saves at vital times.

Its too early to say but I'm sure he can go on to be our number one keeper.
