The old Man Utd Thread

Seems to me that Rio is hardly ever going to be fully fit again, every game he plays he seems to pick up another injury. With the chance that Vidic might be poached away to Spain its probably worth looking at some more centre-backs in the short to medium term.

Hangeland might be a suitable replacement for one of them should we loose one for whatever reason, alongside Evans of course.

Yeah, I am slightly concerned that Vidic might go next summer but his agent has come out saying the complete opposite of what he was reported to be saying earlier in the window.

It might all depend on how much money Barca have to spend as I would be fairly surprised if they didn't try and sign Fabregas. I suppose Real is an option but as cordial as Ronaldo's transfer ended up i'm not so sure Fergie would willfully let another player go there.

I think that Fergie might do another 'Blanc' and sign someone experienced on the cheap (who doesn't have injury problems) to just tide the team over. We've got Cathcart and Chester is out on loan. Evans younger brother is very highly rated too. Although there doesn't seem to have been any official confirmation, that Brazilian defender (Dodo) looks like he'll be joining us in the new year. Lets not forget that Brown is actually a decent central defender, albeit with worse injury problems that Rio, that with a few games would be a good enough cover in my opinion.

Some great play from the highlights i saw, lovely touches from Berbatov lots of energy and work to, which was missing from the whole team against Burnley. Good for the strikers to get some goals each, Rooney looks to coming into good form aswell. Though Gary Nevill, looked abit past it at times, though it sucks to say it as he's a been agreat player over the years.

I think Berbatovs contributions are fantastic. Its testament to how effective he is that Fergie keeps mentioning his languid style (which I understand grates when things are not going our way) to remind fans of what he does bring to the table as his vision and touch are second to none. He created 4 clear chances yesterday with some moments of magic.

This was the perfect response to tuesday. Foster is looking more assured and all the strikers look like they are finding their feet with some lovely goals. Bring on Arsenal.

I'm not a Berbatov hater, but I think he should be influencing the game more. Instead he pops up every now and again with a little bit of magic, which is fine when we're winning but not so fine when we're losing to the likes of Burnley.

When he came on against Burnley he seemed to be the only one trying to create something in the final third. Everyone else looked flat and deflated in comparison.

I don't get this, if you watch him, I mean realy watch him, off the ball moving around dropping off, creating spaces, a lot of the time its brilliant. Hes just more memorable for the moments when he pops up and scores a goal.

I'm not saying hes truely settled yet, and he has a lot more to give, but I think he deserves more credit for the other things he does on the pitch that seem to go bizzarely un-noticed by some people.

Harry has just been on Sky Sports News denying that Fergie has made a £10 million + Carrick move for Modric!

I'd love Modric at United, but not at the expense of Carrick. Were some strange rumours going about today that Fergie was trying to offload Anderson and Carrick after an argument. It sounds like bullshit, but who knows, see if they are in the squad on Saturday. :(

I saw the one about Anderson but it does just look like papers making a story out of a player being left out. Especially as Anderson played against Burnley, although the Mirror said his starting position on the left was 'punishment' rather then being down to injuries.

It is interesting that Carrick has been left out too but instead of trying to constantly rotate all these midfielders maybe Fergie is trying to build 2 or 3 solid partnerships instead of mixing them up all the time. Doesn't neccisarily explain why Carrick was left out as well though.

As you say though we will see at the weekend. Anderson has done very well against Arsenal when he has played so you would expect him to be on the bench at the very least.

I love the Mirror's 'punishment' angle. They don't seem to have considered that Fergie probably wouldn't play someone out of their normal position just to spite them as it clearly wouldn't have a particulalrly good effect on their playing in the match and would affect the team.

"Right, I'm going to intentionally make us less effective but at least he'll have learned a valuable life lesson!"

As I recall, Andy likes playing on the left, although I think he favours left back, oddly.

I think I would too, I definately did last year. Hopefully they won't have settled into their potantial city destroying form by then so we can have a chance at beating them home and away.

I would be a little worried though, as even if they aren't in form their one weekness I noticed from playing Liverpool last year was their lack of pace and creativity going forward, especially on the flanks, with Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema and maybe Robben up front with Alonso feeding them they have pretty much filled in that gap.

Aye, all the British teams have done well realy, although it depends so much on when the games fall, we don't want trips to Russia or Turkey the same week as we visit Liverpool or Chelsea.

Wolfsburg are definately no pushovers either, one of the best teams in a very competative German league and it was no fluke that they won it last year.

In saying that the match in Turkey is on the Tuesday and the City match on the Sunday. A decent break. It would be different if it was Wed/Sat, although the Moscow trip is Wed/Sun, but still a good enough break.

Lets hope Fletcher gets a game today, I think hes going to be key to breaking them up in mid-field. Anderson too would be good although i'm thinking either Giggs or Scholes will start.

I'd give Nani and Valencia a crack at them too, although we haven't seen much of Park so far this season and hes done well against them in the past. Shame Rafael is not fit to hit 'em with another stunner. ;)

I would be very surprised if Fletcher didn't start, he'll be in there to hassle Song and Denilson and make sure thy don't get any time on the ball. If he can do that then we'll restrict Arsenal's midfield by quite a lot, especially as they haven't got any out and out wingers. I am a bit worried about Arshavin, especially if Neville plays on the right. He got bummed by Nasri last year and I fear the same would happen again. I fancy us to be dangerous at set pieces though, the game could well be won around them.
