The old Man Utd Thread

I know I say it every year, so I don't want to disappoint, but god, we've looked so shit so far this season.

I think we're lacking something still. We need more strength in the centre of the pitch. Rooney still seems to be running into midfield to pick up the ball, leaving our striking option as Owen. Poor.

Well, not the best half ever. Owen has a perfectlygood goal ruled out for 'offside' at the start too. Poor defending for the goal, why Carrick (I think) just stood there watching the ball go to Blake is beyond me. His penalty was fucking gash too, if you hit it where he did you only have a 1/2 chance of it going in, utterly pointless. We've looked like scoring all half though so i'm still confident we'll win.

I'm not convinced we were worse than Burnley, we created loads of chances but if you don't put them away you don't win. Ferguson took a gamble today and it failed, the only player who I think came out of today with any credit is Evans. He led the line like a player 10 years older and came out of defence with assurance. Stayed calm despite Brown on a suicide mission for most of the game too.

What really worries me is that despite an entire summer and pre-season to try something out we are playing exactly the same as last season. The balance was all off in midfield. If we'd have took our chances (or Carrick scored the penalty) then maybe it wouldn't have appeared quite so bad but there we go. Hey ho, thats football!

I disagree - Utd were putting barely any pressure on whatsoever for large swathes of the game. From here, with this incredibly jerky feed - so I may be totally wrong - it looked as if Bunley controlled the shape and pace of the game. Utd were purely reactive, snatching opportunities rather than creating them.

Thats mental, there was a period of 15 minutes in the second half where Burnley put some pressure on us but for large parts of the game we were parked in their half.

I was wondering what happened to this thread...

Eammon Holmes, Richard Ashcroft, Michael Atherton, James Nesbitt, Mick Hucknall, can you hear me mick hucknall?

Your Boys took one HELL of a beating!

That's some shocking trolling you should know better.

I, for one, won't be a part of such tomfoolery.

(You missed out Angus Deaton)

I didn't see any of that. Just Utd constantly having to chase the ball down while Burnley controlled the midfield... and when the ball was in Burnley's box it was just pure panic. Sure, a scattergun approach was used against Utd, but it worked.

Phresh you definitely hitting the nail on the head. Midfield was poor tonight. Lacked shaped and it was very reminiscent of last years play indeed. I think when Park is on he comes inside too much and reduces the width. I thought Evra did and well Giggs in the second half. Berba looked good when he came on as well. Should have been on the from the start.

United really could have won the game. Had enough chances but it's all about taking them and Burnley took theirs so fair play. I really think Utd lack a midfielder if the 'old scholesy' mould. Rooney drops too deep as a result. Someone like modric who always gets forward and unlocks the opposition defence with killer passes. Anderson is still unconvincing for me in there. Has some cracker games but looks very ordinary in others like tonight tho what he was doin on the left I will never know.

Oh gawd I just got back :D

Why didn't Anderson and his bum take the penalty?! If he had picked it up between his arse cheeks and wheel-barrowed it over the line it would have been better than letting Carrick take it (in all fairness it wasn't a terrible penalty, but it was only ever going to be 50/50). :(

Anderson was on the left down to injuries I imagine, the list is longer than I thought.

I still believe that Carrick was bought in to replace Scholes with Hargreaves to play behind him but injuries and form (predominantly of Scholes) forced us to play a different way that worked exceptionally well for a couple of seasons. Fletcher then came in and did well, Anderson has played well when given a run in the centre and then of course Giggs has found a new lease of life in the centre. The problem is it lacks any kind of consistency because it's not like any of the players are similar in style either. I do love Anderson but even I'm starting to wonder if Fergie really knows what to do with him.

It's scary how flat and slow ManU play in the final third compared to say... Tottenham. It's like having flair on tap from the likes of the Ronaldo has dulled thier collective senses.

They need a motivator, a Cantona, a Keane, BADLY. Giggs is not it. Scholes is not it. A man to give players like Nani and Carrick a kick when they start to wander.

It's looking a little scary right now. When was the last time ManU strung together a proper in your face back of the net rampage?
