The old Man Utd Thread

Just noticed Foster is on, Fergie was talking about him again today in that interview, saying he would be the England GK at thw World Cup, if he means that then surely he has to play at least 2/3 of the games this season?

I imagine he will play all the Carling Cup, FA Cup and some of the early CL games with a few PL appearences when fixtures get congested. It could all depend on whether any other English keepers have a good season. He's said that Wellbeck will be going to the World Cup too so maybe he knows something we don't. Wouldn't be any more ridiculous than Sven taking Walcott mind.

Promising quote from Fergie after todays game;

“I also expected the form we’ve seen from Berbatov. Last season was a strange one for him and we maybe didn’t use him in the right way, but we know exactly how to use him now – further up the pitch, playing as a centre forward.”

This should hopefully mean we won't see him dropping into midfield too much as we did last season. He showed some absolutely beautiful touches today with some of the creativity around the box that we will need next year.

Getting increasingly excited about the start of the new season now. With the yougsters coming through and at least 4 players joining us through the year (including Hargreaves and Obertan from injury) there is a massive amount of potential in the squad. Shit, we could field an U21's team that would probably finish in the top half of the league! Our next game is in the Audi cup around tea time on wednesday I think. We should get to see Valencia which will be nice.

I'm so excited by the idea of us playing two centre forwards with two wingers. I really think we're going to have a fantastic season, while losing Christiano Ronaldo could never really be a good thing, at least it's made some of the roles of our players much clearer.

Seriously, if he didn't know that was how best to play him he needs to actually start watching players before he buys them :)

Yeah, its a surprising thing to say, given that this guy probably knows more about football and footballers than pretty much anyone. I guess its a nice way of saying 'I had Ronaldo doing whatever the hell he wanted last season so had to tell the other players to fit around him'.

I think he is just avoiding saying 'we played him out of position to accomodate Ronaldo'. Berbatov's ability on the ball does make him good in the holding role it was just at times last season he ended up dropping so deep he was unable to play the kind of ball that Owen scored from today.

EDIT : Beaten by fatbob! Curse you, will this be a running theme this season!

So then Mourinho to succeed Fergie?

Jose admits United desire

Jose Mourinho has revealed that he would like to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Ferguson, 67, has stated his intention to step down at Old Trafford before 2012, but at the moment he shows few signs of giving up the reins after 23 years in charge.

But former Chelsea boss Mourinho has admitted he would readily consider taking charge of United.

"I would consider going to Manchester Unitedbut United have to consider if they want me to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson," the Inter Milanchief told the Daily Mirror.

"If they do, then of course.

"I like England, where the fans are very passionate and make the game a beautiful occasion with such an incredible atmosphere."

Mourinho left England two years ago when he quit as boss of Chelsea and he returned to football last season as he guided Inter Milan to the Serie A title.

It has not passed Mourinho by, however, that Chelsea have failed to win the title since his departure.

"I had many conversations before Chelsea and I decided on a divorce," he continued.

"It was difficult for me because we loved each other but the relationship went in one direction and it was best for everyone.

"Since I left I became a champion again but they have not been champions again. I keep on winning and they don't."

What are peoples thoughts on this then? Personally, I'm undecided I think - although in times gone by, I'd have said no straight away.

I've said all along that I believe it will be Mourinho who replaces Fergie. He is the only manager out there with comparable man management skills at the highest level and he's confident too. The last quote in that interview says it all really.

Fergie wants 19 titles. If Man Utd beat Liverpool's record then his life's work is complete. I would imagine Fergie is almost immortal at Manchester United anyway, but knocking Liverpool off of their perch might mean that the inevitable statue that gets built outside of Old Trafford when he does retire might get gold plated or something.

Mourinho is such a good choice for a replacement though. An absolutely first class manager, knows the English game inside out, knows how to win the league, knows how to win in Europe. Even if you dont like the bloke, you have to respect him (and guess what, thats how the other 91 clubs feel about Fergie.)

It wouldnt surprise me if informal talks had already been held.

Pretty sure I said in another thread but I fancy this'll be Fergie's last season. (if Utd don't win da Prem)

Do you realy think Fergie will retire on a season without winning anything? Rubbish, hes already repeatedly said he wants to surpass Liverpool's league record and get at least one more European Cup.

Hes what, 67/68 now? I think he'll make it a round 70 tbh.

Concerning Jose, we all admire the man, hes a winner, charismatic and all, but is he realy our style? Its more likely that SAF will want someone closer to himself, and although they are pals, do you think he sees Jose as the man for the job?

As a very, very long shot, I wonder what the odds of Darren Ferguson getting the job? Hes done wonders at Peterborough, if he got a Premier League job in the next couple of years and does well he could probably be in line 5-6 down the line depending on who comes in imediately. Maybe he would even take a #2 job behind Jose or whoever comes in?

I think David Moyes is in with a shout too.

Whoever it is, you know it will be Fergie himself who has the biggest say in it, which can only be a good thing.

Can't we just give him a robot body and let his football brain live on forever in the dugout?

Mourinho should take his own advice, (about Ibrahimovic)

I spoke to him a few days before the final decision. I told him that if he wins the Champions League with Barcelona he won't be doing anything extraordinary, seeing as the Catalans have won it twice in three years. I like doing something extraordinary, not what's normal.

So winning titles at United will be something new?

Dunno, the landscape has changed so much in the last 12 months that if he doesn't get the Prem next season he might look at it and think it's a tricky ask for him to get it again.

I guess, I still think we have as good a chance of winning the title as Chelsea and Liverppol this year, it will just be closer. Don't forget though that if things don't work out, he will have a bumper rollover transfer kitty to change things up next summer (assuming that the market isn't as batshit crazy as this summer - although it likely will be). And if that is the case he will want to leave the team in a stable position of power rather than a transitional one, which could set us up for a few years of winning nothing.
