The old Man Utd Thread

Those two players were exactly the players we were missing that night! We had no-one to hastle Barca when they were on the ball, we were always backing off and then booting it up-field. Fletcher and Hargreaves are the best players we have at running after balls and breaking up opposition play.

Agreed, when they had long spells of possession, we missed those 2 to break things down. Whereas every time we had the ball they closed us down with several men immediately. Even Carrick and Scholes were making stray passes.

Interesting article/interview with Fergie here.

Talking about how Owen will be played,

20 minutes every 10 days! Sounds fucked to me

Seriously though, if he keeps to his word and Rooney is played upfront then brilliant, magic. Hopefully he's played just off the main striker, I really do think he'd thrive. It'd improve his consistency if he constantly played there. The manager also has a habit of trying to match teams in formation, certainly in big games. If Rooney does play off the front man, there's also the option for him to occasionally drop a bit further back to make up that 5 man midfield, albeit from a central position rather than wide when he attempts to match the opposition.

I know Berbatov likes to drift deep and be a ballerina in midfield, but he showed at Spurs he's not afraid to get in the box and score though even then he liked to link and was a 1 in 3 guy... I don't think either he or Rooney or stupid, but they did get in each others way at times last year. I think that's largely the reason that there's that ridiculous stat they linked up for literally two goals. But yeah, I think both were told to try and start play deeper with Ronaldo given free reign to basically attack from where he liked.

So, yeah, threaten Berba to stay up top and we're laughing. Or threaten Rooney to stay up top, but I think he's better than Berba so that'd be slightly counter productive. If Owen does do as well as some of you think, there's no way he won't be playing every week. Which means my biggest fear of Rooney out wide, or the slightly unthinkable dropping of Berbatov and an all Scouse midget front line

Going to be a big, big season for Rooney, Anderson and Nani though. Fully confident of Wayne, Anderson I have my concerns. He can be brilliant and had that patch of games towards the end of last season where he was ace, but over a full season? Nani... it really is his last chance.

Which sounds kind of negative, but you have to remember the reason we won the league last year was a brilliant defence and the adaptability and consistency of "squad" players. The likes of Giggs, O'Shea, Fletcher and Evans where every bit as important as the others.

I mean on paper

VDS

Brown Vidic Rio Evra

Fletcher Carrick

Valencia Rooney Nani

Berbatov

is potentially not as strong as some others starting XI, certainly in terms of goals from midfield. But you then remember we can name a second team of:

Foster

Rafael Evans O'Shea Fabio

Tosic Anderson Hargreaves* Park

Macheda Owen

And I've deliberately omitted Scholes and Giggs, possibly Neville, who all can do more than a job, not forgetting the likes of Wellbeck and Gibson who are biting to get in. Who knows what Obertan will be like.

Clearly Hargreaves would play instead of Fletcher, but I don't see him making this wonder recovery. I mean even if he is back for October, he's been out for a year, won't have had a pre season and will almost certainly be slightly tentative.

But, yeah, like I said it was the squad and defense that did it last time and those haven't changed. Just hoping Nani isn't such a shit head and Rooney is played in his best place.

Ramble over.

I actually think Rooney's best work a lot of time is right up top on the shoulder of the last defender. He just hasn't played there enough and him been moved all over the place to accommodate other players, namely Ronaldo hasn't helped in the slightest.. With Ronaldo gone I really hope we build the team around Rooney, and a Rooney who players as a striker.

Personally speaking, I think a Rooney and Berbatov partnership could be fantastic. Both intelligent players with and without the ball and both equally adept in a withdrawn role or playing further up top. Add Owen to the fold, who looks very much up for the season (from his brief performances in pre-season and all his interviews he's given since his arrival) and will undoubtedly get goals should he stay fit. Add to that Macheda and Welbeck who I think both have fantastic potential to succeed at United.

Just can't wait for the bloody season to start now!

I think we should set Gabzy with Ji. Take one for the team so to speak... ahem

Wonder who is going to take Tevez' place in their gang? Big John? I guess they will still see Carlitos almost as much as usual so in that way i'm happy for them. :)

I remember reading an interview with Fletch, where he said Park, Evra and Tevez were basically inseparable, but that he had no idea what language they spoke together. Seeing as Tevez won't even need to move house, I suppose they won't be broken up too much.

-_- That interview is ace. Not quite as good as the Ronaldo-Anderson one mind!

The U19's has started in Ukraine with both Wellbeck and Ljaijc in action. I'd completely forgotten about it until I though i'd check the UEFA site for fixtures and the first round had already been completed. From the brief match reports I couldn't say much about Wellbeck but Ljajic did get the assist for the Serbia goal. Both teams drew 1-1.

I'll try, grainy stream while at work but here goes;

Kiko's was very well taken. We broke up the Koreans play on the half way line (not sure who it was) and the ball found it's way to Rooney who lofted a 40 yard ball over the top for Kiko who kept his nerve, took it round the keeper and calmly slotted it home with his left foot. Very well taken and kept his composure very impressibly for a 17 year old.

Berba's was a header on the near post, Gibson was down the right side, got to the byline and crossed to the near post which was inch perfect as Berbatov didn't need to move or jump and powered the header to the near post beating the keeper with great placement and power.

Thats about as much as I can remember/saw. Might not be 100 percent correct but it'll be near as damn.

Rooney, all good goals.

The broken leg was a Seoul player yes, he fell awkwardly after trying to tackle Evra and it looked like an above the knee break. :blah:

What I saw look disgusting with the leg bending wierdly and the skin bunching. But it was a stream, so my head might of made it up, but the doctors hurridly got him off the field.

How the fuck do you break your thigh playing football? o_O

edit: surely if he'd badly broken his leg they wouldn't have hurriedly got him off the field at all? They'd spend a decent amount of time treating him and making sure it was all strapped up and so on. Are you sure he actually broke his leg and you didn't imagine it? :blah:

Yeah, some streams I could just as well be watching a pepperoni pizza going round in a microwave.

Nice that all our strikers have got on the scoresheet now. Good to get a bit of confidence up. Macheda's had a fair bit of game time now too.

I actually didn't notice anything when watching it or any of the replays. He sort of fell backwards and dropped to the ground. Although when he was lying on the ground his skin above his knee seemed to "bunch" (no otehr way to describe it). It was weird.

Yeah, it was disgusting, it seemed to bend and bunch on the bend, but above the knee. :blah:

The more I see Kiko play the more I think we have a future star on our hands, as everyone keeps saying its hard to believe hes still 17. Looks like he'll be our 4th striker this season, and I hope he scores a hatfull for us.

He took his goal incredibly well. He's got a lot to learn in terms of general play but I think he's got a future at United if he continues to progress the way he is doing. Another thing, he looks big already so I expect he's going to be fecking huge by the time he stops growing!

I think along with Welbeck we've got the prospect of bringing through two very gifted strikers.
