The old Man Utd Thread

Yeah but Man Utd are worse off. None of the other big 4 have sold anyone significant (yet), all of them have made additions to their squad. Although its a big 'yet', so we'll see. I think Ferguson probably knows what hes doing but it does seem a risk to have an obviously weakened team going against a team that was only 4 points behind last year and has strengthened.

If you keep Alonso then yeah, otherwise you are in the same position as us because you'll have lost your best player from last season. Chelsea have added what, a left winger? I would consider Chelsea improved were it not for another new manager and an already old team another year older. Arsenal were poor last year so it could only get better for them really.

I completely agree that our first team has been weakened compared to others but our squad is as strong as ever and over the course of a season that is what will dictate who wins the league.

I personally find it amazing that United are being wrote off before a ball has even been kicked or the transfer window shut, I'd of thought there were enough examples of this kind of shit blowing up in peoples faces to stop any kind of giddiness. Really recent ones, too. I mean pre Xmas the manager says "That's it, I'm done for shopping". Boxing day, well it wasn't then but it was before January, Lilly Jack and Tosic sign.

See Ferguson lying about Tevez and phoning him, offering deals by text etc? Totally contradicts what Gill said, and Jorarararararcharrrrin too boot. It'll be funny for Tevez though, should City get another striker like they're trying to, he'll have the same situation as at Utd where he won't play every game and feel all lonely and unloved. Only this time he won't have trophies to partially cheer him up :)

Talking of the manager lying, I really, really hope he's exaggerating or outright lying on the role that the little scrote Owen will play. The way both the manager and player are talking it suggests to me they think he'll be a lot more than an impact sub as first suggested. If that's the case then I fear once again Rooney will be forced on the wing as there's no way on earth the manager will play Phresh's 4/3/3 against anybody but the weakest of teams at home.

Hope to god Rooney isn't seen as a left winger, but I get this horrid feeling he is.

I will bet anyone £20 we dont win anything major next season.

I dread to think where the goals are going to come from, Ronaldo not only scored loads but he was also our most potent creative talent. Id love to know how many goals he was directly involved in last season. Fergie is taking a lot of risks on Owen and Valencia and I remain unconvinced.

We need Rooney to have his best season of football if we are to have any chance at all.

I remember when Van Nistelrooy left, everybody then quested where the goals were going to come from but it wasn't a problem.

I wouldn't write our season off just yet, Ronaldo is a loss, of that they is no doubt. But losing him doesn't automatically mean we won't be competitive or successful. The team and players will move on, and I'm confident that'll we'll still be in the mix come the end of the season to be in with a chance of getting a trophy or two.

I wouldn't rule out any more additions to the squad despite what Sir Alex as said. I've never forget him saying in no uncertain terms that Veron will be a Utd player next season, I think he sold him with 3 days after that statement.

I wasn't happy with the Owen transfer either, but I have to say if he stays fit he could become an vital player for us. The one thing he will do is get goals.

I pray to god that we don't see Rooney on the left/right side midfield this season. Although I guess he will play parts of the season there due the fact that at this current moment in time he's far and away our best left sided winger.

Writing off the team you claim to support before a ball has been kicked - actually betting against us winning something- you do us all proud.

Who was it that bet we would loose matches last season? I guess it takes the edge off if we do lose but I don't think I could bet against my club, I don't have a problem with feeling anything but pissed off if we loose, its the way it should be.

Yeah. Last season Ferguson said Rooney needed to be played as a striker, but he got shunted to the left. He's saying the same things now, hopefully now he means it.

He's bought in two wingers to replace one winger/striker and that doesn't included Tosic/Wellbeck being used out there. It would be madness to build the team around anyone other than Rooney so he should be used in his best position unless it is absolutely desperate.

Percentage of goals involved in

Cristiano Ronaldo 47%

Roque Santa Cruz 47%

Fernando Torres 42%

Elano 39%

Emmanuel Adebayor 37%

Thats why im worried!

Where'd you get those mate? Nice to see three City players in there...

He showed promise in the few games he played for us last season. Plus he was voted the reserve player of the year IIRC.

I think that was the season before last. Shame to see him go but Rafael is clearly ahead of him in the pecking order and with Brown back fit he was unlikely to get too many chances.

What does involved in mean?

I assume it means 'touched the ball in the lead up to a goal' so hardly surprising he had a high percentage. Part of the problem seems to be that people just look at the goals Ronaldo scored/created and because we haven't replaced him directly just assume that we will lose all those goals/chances completely. I expect Rooney/Berbatov to increase on last years tally, Valencia will get a few goals and Owen will beat Tevez's tally from last season. It really wouldn't surprise me if next season we score a similar number of goals to last, the problem will be if we can get them in the big games.

Looks like Gibson has signed a new contract too, clearly shows Ferguson's intent and we may see him in the first team a bit more.

EDIT: Those stats are for 07/08 anyway, I doubt they were that good for last season. I wondered why Torres and Adebayor were in there too!

And RSC, who had a terrible season last time round compared to his debut season under Sparky.

Looks like we'll have a new striker come January. Mame Biram Diouf seems to be name doing the rounds as the mystery striker Sir Alex mentioned in Malaysia. Still no announcement as yet.

Never seen him play, but he did score 3 goals in 9 minutes in his last game - he must be good right?

EDIT

MEN as now published a story.

United sign young striker

JULY 17, 2009

UNITED have signed young Senegalese striker Mame Biram Diouf from Norwegian club Molde - the same club that gave the Reds legendary striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website: “We signed a young player yesterday from Norway, who we’ve been looking at for two years.

“We weren’t intending on signing anyone else after last week – we feel we have a full squad – but the situation accelerated to a point where other clubs started to make bids, so we had to decide whether we acted or didn’t act. We decided to act and he’ll be the last person we sign.”

Chief executive David Gill added: “He was signed yesterday and he needs a work permit. He’ll stay on loan where he is and we’ll look to bring him [to Manchester] in January.”
