Phresh's midfield formations fill me with dread. The european cup final showed exactly how shit our midfield is against a good team. it was all well and good playing anderson and fletcher as main midfielders against 'boro and newcastle, but it's a joke. I'm really nervous about it.

nani is a complete waste of time,

fletcher i'll give it is a great workhorse but he's got nowhere near the quality id expect us to have in our first team

scholes / giggs are past it now no matter how much of an ardent utd fan you are.

Carrick i do like, but i reckon he's finding himself far too stretched and when he's feeling as though he's the only one putting any effort in, he lets far too many poor mid-long range passes not hit their target.

lets not get started about that joke of a brazillian Anderson.

Tosic from what ive seen doesnt look a bad little player but im not convinced this season he'll do it for us.

Ive not been this uneasy about our midfield since we had to replace Keane. Theres no quality in there. it just seems a hollow husk at the moment. ;)

On the assumption that Hargreaves is out most of the season or an attacking option?

In the knowledge that Hargreaves is out until January and probably longer and Anderson still isn't good enough.

And if Owen's number 7 I wont be happy. That number means something at this club.

I disagree with the large majority of that but I suppose we'll know how it all turns out rather soon.

Apart from the games against the big 4 it's unlikely we're going to encounter many games before xmas where a defensive midfielder will be required though. Gibson doesn't look like being shipped out so maybe Ferguson has him in mind should he be required. I agree that Anderson hasn't performed to a level that we expect but he won't get there by not playing consistently which is what I want to see next season.

The number 7 thing doesn't bother me, when we bought Ronaldo there was absolutely no guarantee he was going to achieve the heights he did, likewise with Cantona. It is a bit unusual to give it to a player who may not neccisarily be a first choice player but other than Valencia which signing will? People will have complained just as much if Valencia got it and then you end up with the #7 shirt just sitting waiting for the next big thing.

Yeah, takes a bit of pressure off Valencia not getting the #7 shirt and being compared to Ronaldo imediately. Owen can take the pressure and will not be directly compared to Ronaldo anyway. Owen will probably only be with us a few seasons, in which time if Valencia has become the new big thing he (or whoever steps up or is brought in) will assume the number when Owen leaves/retires I suppose.

It wouldn't surprise me if they do a deal with Gremio to bring Costa over in January, it's something we've done a few times recently.

At the end of the day we've sold 2 first team players and bought in another 2/3 (if you include Obertan) and Ljajic makes that 4 in January. With Wellbeck, Owen and Macheda I believe we've got more than enough players to compensate for Tevez leaving and from the looks of things Fergie has done the right thing and instead of trying to replace Ronaldo is looking to build the team around Rooney. It at least looks that way with a number of wingers being brought in anyway.

I think the most difficult thing for the team will be a complete change in the focus of who the play goes through. For the last couple of seasons a lot of our play has been focussed through Ronaldo and there is no direct replacement in the team. Seeing as our squad is now essentialy set for the forth coming season how about a few potential team sheets we will see?

I do expect we'll see a lot more of Foster this season as if he is going to be our number 1 keeper next season then he needs to get some serious game time this year. When certain parts of the media (cough Alan 'Cunt' Green cough) are suggesting that we won't even challenge for the title this season that looks like a pretty decent side to me. I'd love to see Anderson get a real regular run in the team, he sufferered from injuries last year and with a regular starting place I think he'll come on leaps and bounds. When you add in the other promising youth players and the experience of Giggs and Scholes we've still got an absolutely cracking squad. It looks increasingly likely that Chelsea aren't going to make any big signings and Liverpool are going to lose their best player from last season so it doesn't actually look that bad for us at all. Hell, i'm excited!

I like both line ups a lot but I think Welbeck will be used a lot more than people think - fergie said he would be a full international at the end of the season so he must have big plans for him.

I am happy we have not got anyone else our youth needs to shine!

Wow. So the number 7 shirt, a shirt that some of the greatest ever United legends have worn, Best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham and Ronaldo has been given to Michael Owen. What a fucking joke.

But they all became legends at United. I'm not saying Owen will but it's not like any of those players were guaranteed to become legends. And hey, Fergie gave the shirt to three of them so who is to argue with him?

Redcafe also said that Fergie said 'everything's possible, don't rule anything out', not to mention this time last year he said 'our business is done'. I think if someone he really wanted came up we'd go for it a la Berba

You need a workhorse type to give Carrick the space and time to play, so Fletcher would probably be the best to partner him.

You guys all seem to have forgotten about Park as well!

The squad is still fantastic with some of the best players in the world at OT. Why so worried?

I like times like this, it really shows up those who actually know anything about football and the plastics.

"I phoned him on holiday and he never got back to me and I texted him twice and he never got back to me then either, so obviously he had made his mind up a long time ago.

I've actually got Fergie's phone right here... Let's check the Sent Messages.

Absolutely. When he gets a run of games, everyone seems to be like "shit, he's awesome isn't he" and then just forget.

As for the strength of our midfield, Fletcher is a very good holding midfielder, Anderson and Carrick are more about making runs and final incisive passes. All can do the box-to-box role, but I've always thought that tactically that's a poor use of such great players. We all know about Valencia, and hopefully with some games Nani can show more than just promise.

Our best midfield partnership in the last 5 years was Carrick and Scholes, neither of whom do the 'workhorse' job. I think Carricks problem last year was having to constantly switch between the two centre midfield roles depending who he was playing with. I'd like to see him consistently in one of the roles next season which is partly why I like the idea of a Fletcher/Carrick/Anderson midfield. There is enough defensive nous there to cover the majority of games and everyone one of them has attacking qualities too.

I think some people forget that both Anderson and Nani had very decent first seasons. That last seasons performances weren't as good isn't just a case of the players not performing as quite frankly the majority of players didn't.

We do forget about Park a little which is a shame has he probably had his best season last year but at 28 (I think) he isn't one fo rthe future anymore, especially on the wing.

I will bet anyone £20 we dont win anything major next season.

I dread to think where the goals are going to come from, Ronaldo not only scored loads but he was also our most potent creative talent. Id love to know how many goals he was directly involved in last season. Fergie is taking a lot of risks on Owen and Valencia and I remain unconvinced.

We need Rooney to have his best season of football if we are to have any chance at all.

But thats it though isn't it, as good as Ronaldo was and as many goals has he scored he wasn't the player that made the team tick. I'd be far more worried if Rooney left.

As long as Rooney and Berbatov can improve on last seasons haul and the other strikers add a few then i'm confident we'll do well. Will we win the title? Who knows, it's not like the other top teams are any better off at the moment.

I'll take that bet, what do you count as major? League, FA Cup, Europe?

A lot has been made of Fergie (perhaps rightly) drawing a line under spending this summer, but he does actually say at the end of the interview that anything could still happen in the next 1-2 months.

Yeah but Man Utd are worse off. None of the other big 4 have sold anyone significant (yet), all of them have made additions to their squad. Although its a big 'yet', so we'll see. I think Ferguson probably knows what hes doing but it does seem a risk to have an obviously weakened team going against a team that was only 4 points behind last year and has strengthened.

Liverpool will probably loose one, if not both of Alonso and Masch though and Chelsea could still loose major players too. Its already been a crazy transfer window, and there is still quite a bit of it left.
