The old Man Utd Thread

I watched the cerimony, the were showing it on every single tv channel here in Portugal. He looked genuinely happy and, which is rarer, humbled. My heart sank seeing him in the kit but who can blame him? It suits him. He feels at home now, and has made a childhood dream come true. I honestly hope he has a cracking career, I have no doubts that he will. You can't help but appreciate all the success he helped bring to the club, he's a legend in my books.

Who knows? Hopefully we'll stumble across another 18 year old kid with masses of potential and even bigger determination.

Who then wants to leave us for somewhere more glamorous. The cycle continues.

You catch any of the ceremony at Madrid today on Sky Sports?. Hugely impressive, I'm mightily jealous. They're filling stadiums to show off a corking new player and we're... well, you know what we're doing. Kinda only just sunk in he's gone and what it means. :)

The idea of selling the best and using to buy a stand really is folly, aint it? In honesty I have huge doubts over the South Stand. I can't see the cost of moving the train line anything over than hugely prohibitive, and maybe I'm being unduly suspicious and negative but the talk of a new stand only seems to occur around season ticket renewal time.

The implications being cheaper tickets, singing zones etc etc but all I see is more price increases and the incredible decision to make registering a credit card mandatory to being a ST holder. Never officially confirmed the Stand talk, but it's been as regular a pre season story as the Fabregas to Spain story.

I haven't seen the ceremony so can't really comment on that but if I was a Real fan i'd cheer for fucking anything after their performances in Europe the last few years. For me the most exciting moments of last year were seeing Rafael, Wellbeck and some of the others emerge from the reserves. It's like when you just start a new relationship, the most exciting thing about it is the unkown and thats the way I feel about United at the moment. We're going into the unknown and I cannot fucking wait.

Regarding the stand I don't really know a lot about the issues surrounding it just that a 95k stadium would be pretty cool.

If he gives us another 6 great seasons like Ronaldo did, would you really complain? That's football.

weve been linked with a move for Klaas Jan Huntelaar 20 million (pinch of salt as its reported in the sun). what are peoples thoughts on this?

i wouldnt mind signing Huntelaar we should do a double deal for him and sneijder

What 'proposed stadium expansion'? It can't get any bigger. We're not allowed to move the train line, it's not a question of money.

I don't know about the moving the train line thing, but it definitely can get bigger without moving it. Not by much though apparently, last time I was over I brought my wife on the tour of OT. They pointed out the last extension and said that we can extend in some of the corners but it will only add about 5k to the capacity. They also said for us to expand beyond that we would need to dig down, a la Nou Camp.

Now I know this was a tour guide but I'm sure he wouldn't talk about it unless he was briefed.

It is, the landowners want way way way too much for it to be moved (or, presumably it could just be made into a tunnel under the stadium?). Or so people who run the stadium have told me before anyhow.

Agree with all of that. Good luck to him, except when he plays us of course when I hope Scholes "tackles" him.

Yeah, I'm surprised by how little that video pissed me off. Maybe I'm almost... happy for the guy. Part of me still wants all these galacticos' styles to clash and end up playing like Newcastle, but still.

Tunnel under the stadium, with possibly a new "old trafford" station built-in? Yeah. I read somewhere that all this would cost just shy of 100m, but it would add 15k seats... so would probably pay for itself in a few years time. Plus it would be awesome.

I'd be far more interested in sneijder, but quite frankly if Madrid want rid of two great players, we can get them on the cheap and there's a place for them in the team, why not.

Not a bad idea that, I mean its already set beneath the ground level of the statium, so it shoulnd't be too hard? Would it need to go lower?

Huntelaar, Berbatov and Owen; all good players but giving you zero pace up front. Macheda and Welbeck better turn out to be absolutely amazing if that's Fergie's thinking.

Yeah, I doubt Huntelaar is on the cards since we picked up Owen. I imagine we asked Real what prices they were quoting and said no thanks.

Would be interested in Sneijder if the price is right, still like Ashley Young or David Silva though.

Obertan Has Medical.

Blanc admitted his surprise that a club of United's stature had come in for Obertan and added that the youngster needed to improve in a number of areas if he is to be a success at the Theatre of Dreams.

"I was surprised too, but it is an unexpected chance for him to play with one of the best clubs in the world," he told Europe1.

"Manchester United have been tracking him for a long time. They certainly hope to advance him, something that Bordeaux and Lorient have failed to do.

"He has the potential, but he must overcome psychological and mental challenges so he can express his true value."

:blah:

Nice, I think he should get his shot this season now. In all fairness to VDS, hes done a great job and has been far and away our best keeper sincer Big Pete, but I think hes realy starting to loose it now.

Seems we're gonna buy Obertan. I know nothing of him, but what the limited stuff on t'internet he seems to be pretty good on the ball, quite sturdy and strong also.

According to some places the fee won't be that high anyway

8m did sound too high. Not sure if I said it in here before but I expect he'll go into the reserves for a short while with Tosic (and Wellbeck) moving up to the first team.

Regarding free kicks there must be loads of players in the squad who are half decent at them. Ronaldo scored some absolutely spectacular free kicks over the years but was his strike rate from them actually that good?

Rooney is a quality free-kick taker, I expect he'll be practising them a lot more now. Seriously, I think he's gonna be amazing next season.
