The old Man Utd Thread

I'd agree with most of that fatbob. Certainly think another top class striker would complicate matters like last season and tbh, could really do without it. I have no doubt Berba and Rooney will be formidable next year.

This is exactly why Owen would be the perfect replacement for Tevez in next season's squad. If he starts moaning about not getting enough games, that can only be a good thing seeing as he'll only be expected to start Carling and FA Cup games for the most part. And then after next year's world cup, he can go to Hull anyway. Owen won't make up for losing out on Benzema, but grabbing him on a free fills the gap left by Tevez and allows Sir Alex to wait for the right man to come along. Some are describing it as a panic move, but I see it as anything but. It's a win-win situation. He might even come back to life with a World Cup around the corner.

Benzema would have been great but I suspect Berbatov would make a shit £30m impact sub.

I'm amazed we're going with Owen, considering they announced the policy of only buying young players earlier this year.

However, Owen can still score goals and he'll get chances laid on a platter before him at United.

It was said that we won't be buying players over 26 for big money, but seeing as Owen will be for free he is allowed...apparently.

If we sign Owen, which I don't want, that most likely means that we aren't signing another striker. Not particularly what we wanted.

I'm undecided on Owen. If he's not going to cost anything to sign and is being paid peanuts relative to other players which he surely will be then it doesn't seem that bad an idea but even if he doesn't get injured I think he's probably a little past it now due to injuries in the past. I don't see him as a decent replacement for Tevez either as he won't have the work rate.

I'm probably weird in that I'd prefer us to stick with what we've got and let the youngsters play even if we don't win anything. It's been far too long since players like Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, the Nevilles etc. came through and it looks like we might be in a similar position again if we just give them a chance.

Which striker would you go for now though? There are rumours we might go for Luis Fabiano this morniing but he never did well on the big stage in Italy. I've made my feelings clear on Villa and that excludes the fact that you'd end up paying over 35 million for a 27 year old.

Possebon is going on a seasons loan to Sporting Braga. Will be interesting to see how he develops but I don’t think too many people will be expecting him to return. Has always looked more comfortable playing the game at a slower pace.

Are you sure we talking about the same Fabiano?

Absolutely, this is why he could be a success. If we need a goal, send him on as an impact player.

Yeah, because last season a really shit team decided not to start him when it most mattered. You couldn't even blame the manager as Baldy loves the guy and gave him a shot. They brought him on as a sub and he scored so many goals, didn't he. When he did start, again he scored so many times. Sure Newcastle are shit, but he had chances and fucked them up.

The only impact he'll have is of depriving a place on the bench and one of the allocated substitutions for somebody much, much more deserving and talented.

Out of interest, how did the whole Robbie Fowler experiment go? You know, the whole "if we get him fit and scoring he'll be mint"... "if he gets us 10 goals from the bench" etc etc. That smack head was not only a better goalscorer than Owen, but probably less fucked than him too.

Why exactly did we release Saha again?

Yeah I don't recall Luis Fabiano ever playing in Italy. Porto and Sevilla are the only clubs he's played for recently IIRC.

God knows who i'm thinking of!

..Owen hate...

You really don't want him at United do you? ^_^

Wouldn't they be better off using Macheda and Wellbeck as subs/Carling etc players so they gain this all-important experience and are one day more useful? Owen seems like a pretty bad idea for the club to me. Not that I know more than Ferguson about management.

Newcastle have several players I'd imagine would be desirable to Birmingham and Wolves. I'm talking Nolan, Guthrie, Butt, even Joey Barton. And this has got my laughed at by everyone I know, but I'd love to see Michael Owen in a United shirt next season.

Well, well, well.

There's no real indication we were ever even seriously bidding for Benzema other than tabloid speculation - if you read the papers they make it sound as though we were beaten to signing Benzema and Kaka and that we had Ronaldo stolen from us. The truth is we were never in for Kaka and probably never made a serious bid for Benzema and Ronaldo, well Ferguson has a habit of letting players go when it suits him and the time is right.

As far as Owen goes I can't see a problem, for one he's free, and the wages certainly won't cripple us. The problem last year was trying to work in 3 top quality, and expensive strikers, and it back fired really with Tevez getting the hump and Rooney playing in a role that didn't make the most of his abilities. This way we have a reserve striker, like Sheringham or Larrson, who is happy to be the back up striker. We get an experienced striker to act as back up and it gives Macheda and Wellbeck a chance to ease into regular first team action this season.

Hopefully we get another player to replace the hole that will be left by Scholes/Giggs at the end of the season

Thing is, Owen will probably end up playing in mid-field somewhere, linking up play, I can't see him being played as an out and out striker for us most of the time.

I get the argument that we were never in for Benzema, as we didn't ever bid for him, but there isn't often smoke without fire and i'm pretty sure people have said we were in at least talks with Lyon, but it went no further because he said he wanted to go to Spain.

This signing is a reaction to not getting the man he wanted, an oppertunity came up to take on the guy Fergie has always liked for free. I think Benzema was our only target forward, and thats why we're getting Owen, because he can be a stop-gap untill the Fergie can identify someone else he wants and when the market is not crazy. Its a good move in terms of the fact that we aren't panic buying and frittering away our warchest on some over-priced player with no Premiership experience.

He lives a mile and a half from my house, and hes famously obnoxious to the other people in the village (northop Hall). I was talking to a neighbour of his the other day who was telling me how he recently threatened to run over her dogs if they wandered in the lane. When she replied that she would do his horses then, he said that most beautiful of phrases (Don't you know who I am?)....One of the other villagers who was nearby interjected with "Quick "sandra" (or whatever her name is) phone the ambulance, this blokes doesn't know who he is"

Michael drove off like a bloke put in his place.

Have to laugh at Ian Rush....

"Personally, I'd like to have seen him at Liverpool but they haven't lost their best strikers. Rafael Benitez will be happy with what he's got".......

I think what he meant to say was 'striker'.

This signing is seriously like something from the twilight zone tho. My head is pickled by this.
