The old Man Utd Thread

In terms of value to the team Beckham probably set up as may goals as Ronaldo scored. Thus you can compare the two.

That's not how you do statistics. Either get some proper numbers or shut up.

Don't forget Ronaldo's assists (if there were any) and Beckham's goals.

The thing I'll be most worried about with Ronaldo leaving is that he had the ability to turn over the lesser 11-men-behind-the-ball teams. It was our ability to always beat them that has won us the league these last two seasons. It certainly wasn't our performances against the rest of the big four. Ronaldo was better at that than anyone else.

I think Rooney's good enough if we can get him back in the centre to double his goal tally next season. I concur on Valencia, Ribery and Benzema. A world class goalie and right back in there somewhere too.

I think Ferguson wants to build one more incredible team before he leaves and this will give him the opportunity.

I don't think it's fair to say he had no love for his team. He stuck around ages and eventually seemed to mature quite well. I was his biggest hater originally.

United have sold 'irreplaceable' players before, it's no problem, they'll come back stronger.

They need to replace Scholes as well don't they?

We didn't win anything last season either, but we pushed on and did vastly better in the league. Next season, if we have a fully fit Gerrard and Torres all season and Man Utd are minus Ronaldo... who knows?

We know. You'll win fuck all. Again.

The numbers are not easy to find so fuck you pal.

While obviously "fuck you" is universally regarded as the ultimate comeback, and for me now there is no possible retort, your previous Beckham/Ronaldo argument is still rendered utterly invalid by your inability to back it up with anything whatsoever.

My two cents:

£80m is too good to turn down, obviously. This has been on the cards for a long time and Ferguson will have been planning for it for months. He knows who he wants, and he knows how we're going to overcome losing the best player in the world. We wont go for a replacement - how do you replace the irreplacable? - I see us adopting a new forward strategy. If we bring in Valencia, a centre-forward (Huntelaar?) and some more Brazilian slave wonder kids, we'll be okay.

I was getting sick of defending the sulky twat anyway. :(

I think we'll be playing 4-4-2 next year, with forwards being forwards and wingers being wingers. We need another first-team winger, right now we have Park and... yep that's it. Nani is likely to get more opportunities next term but we need to have an alternative so Rooney isn't always shoved out there.

Right now........

David Beckham scored 62 goals in 265 premiership games and provided 152 assist

Ronaldo has scored 84 goals in 196 premiership games and provided 36 assist

If my calculations prove right, Ronaldo during his tenture has provided 0.61 goals per game for Utd. Beckham provided 0.81 goals per game for Utd. I had to take premiership statistics only as goal assists by Beckham were not provided for all other competitions. Thus looking at the stats David Beckham was actually more potent during his Utd career than Ronaldo. The stats say Beckham was better than Ronaldo for Utd, thus Utd have got rid of a better player than Ronaldo previously.

They are as proper numbers as you are gonna get. My argument is validated. I hate myself for letting you have annoyed me so much but you know what. Im gonna shout from the fucking roof tops. YYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

So this is why Ferguson said Nani would definitely be here next season. :(

Well, according to the gossip Sporting want him back on loan at least for next season for some reason.

Offering Joao Moutinho too in some sort of deal.

Although Moutinho is still young and looks interesting, i'm not sure he would add too much to the team we have at the moment.

You're probably right fatbob, but having watched Moutinho since he hit the scene for Sporting and Portugal, he's a lovely little player who seems to have it all. With Scholes nearing retirement I think he would be a good addition to the squad.

Doesn't it feel better now? Stunning figures for Beckham there, if they're accurate.

Of course, I'll have to ask you to go back and get the figures for Beckham prior to the age of 24 only, since Ronaldo hasn't yet reached his best years as a midfielder, whereas Beckham had his best years at United.

(I jest)

Yeah, like I say, I find him interesting and he seems like a nice chap, but with Anderson, Carrick I think we are ok at the moment in that department, although it didn't seem right as our mid-field was taken apart in Rome.

I would be interested to see this go ahead, but wouldn't want to spend too much on him, but if it was part of some loan + money + swap deal with Nani it seems like a good deal. But thats the problem, why would Sporting want to virtually offer up tone of their best players (and Captain at that) in exchange for Nani?

I confess i'm not up to scratch on the state of the Sporting squad, but assume they have an even younger player coming through from the accademy to fill Mouty's shoes?

On another topic, what does anyone think about the idea of Glen Johnson coming in at right back? His performances over past couple of seasons have raised him up a lot in my opinion, watching swing in perfect balls to Rooney on Wednesday night reminded me of the Nev of old.

Nev is pretty much done now, Rafael is a great future prospect but not even 20 yet? and I think Johnson has the edge over Brown for me atm.

He would also bring one of the occasional best afros to the table.

Well we do rather need to shore up the RB position a bit as we seem to have an injury curse there these days. Could do much worse than Johnson TBH and I know you love your players with afros. Maybe we should have seen if we could have gotten Sergio Ramos thrown into the Ronaldo deal.

I was going to mention him too, I like him. He's not quite the finished article but if we could get him for a decent price I think he could do really well under SAF's guidance.

I know everyone's talking about who might replace Ronaldo etc but I really hope some of this £80m goes on a world class defensive midfielder. I hate to say it but I think Hargreaves is going to struggle to be the player we bought two seasons ago, and Fletch is great but we need another option. Someone in the mould of Essien, or Mascherano, or Makalele. There were far too many occasions last seasons where teams were literally running through our midfield and we looked way too exposed. As much as I love Anderson he's never going to be able to do that job and I don't think we should be trying to force him into that role.

So yeah, defensive mid, Johnson, Benzema and Ribery please Fergie.... :(

I would be nice to have another right-back. Then Brown is officially cover for centre-back. Yeah, Anderson doesn't mind getting stuck into a tackle, but like Rooney he should be reminded that this is not his focus. He should be scaring defenses, going on runs and making incisive passes.

Best Player in the World my hole!

Best Player at getting the ball and shooting no matter where he is on the pitch, or what foot its on, despite any other options that might be there. Oh and scoring 1 out of every 10 shots against any team outside the top 6.

The thing is though, that has been Utd's tactic for the last 2 years, so what the fuck are you gonna do now?

I expect to see Rooney back at his best again or even better, he seemed to be stifled recently with Ronaldo there. That still leaves the problem of having no wingers, central midfielders (well Anderson could push on), right back, or keeper. That £80mill won't go far.

Ronaldo will make Real no where near what Beckham did. And Beckham is and was by far a better player.

You lot make me laugh, it's like the only players that exist are attackers or something? Considering the amount of time you spend sitting behind the ball against any decent team, I'd have thought you'd be more inclined to acknowledge that a footballer who can defend, or pass for that matter holds as much importance as one who can shoot and score.

So you missed ALL those posts above yours about right backs and defensive mids?
