The old Man Utd Thread

I can't see past Ribery personally, they were strong rumors weeks ago that we were interested in him. He's a quality player and he's the type of player we should be looking at, one of the few wide players out there who come close to Ronaldo.

James Milner? Really?

Ribery and maybe David Silva are the only wide players who come close to being an instant replacement. Silva's a tough bugger but he is quite small so Ribery might be able to acclimatise to the Premiership a bit easier (although neither player is ever going to be as powerful and adept in the air as Ronaldo).

You have to be kidding.

I don't want Valencia either, just not a Utd-level player. I don't know if I'd like Ribery, mightn't suit our play, Silva might be an option. I hope though, that we get Benzema, I don't mind if Tevez stays or goes.

We do also need a defensive midfielder. Senna is too old (33), but if the reports are true, and Yaya Toure is available, then he might be worth a shot. Hargreaves doesn't look like coming back any time soon.

Sneijder can play on the wing, he'll probably won't get a look in now they have Ronaldo and Kaka. Actually, I'd think we could get him on the cheap as part of the deal. He's clearly a top, top player, who gets an okay amount of goals from midfield.

We don't need Senna or Toure, we have Fletch. Terrific holding midfielder.

I really rate Sneijder and Van Der Vaart, I wish we'd gone for him before he went to Hamburg actually

True, with Ronaldo leaving I can't see where you would be able to fit in a pacy, penetrating winger who takes on defenders and scores goals.

ZING.

Also to Liamness: Sneijder isn't really a winger really and he's not especially quick. He is a class player though, I just wonder if United really need someone else to occupy that space between midfield and attack when Rooney and Berbatov drop so deep already. Sneijder would probably suit Chelsea more tbh with the way their midfield and attack is set up.

He's not that quick and I reckon he'd take a battering from Prem defenders.

Erm...Have you seen him play before? He's fucking rapid mate. He's also a pretty physical player and, in spite of his size, relishes a tussle. Unlike David Silva by the way who, for all his skill, is a bit of a mincey little dancer.

Nah no way, Silva's a tough little sod who works hard and isn't afraid to get stuck in. Smaller than Ribery though.

I'm still not convinced that Ronaldo leaving will be the worst thing ever . If Berbatov became a proper out and out striker and you had someone who was more of a straight playmaker then I don't really see Man Utd missing him. I kind of feel that Rooney has been isolated by Ronaldo dictating the formation.

Ribery is a tough cookie, I don't think he'd have a problem settling in England if I'm honest. Germany is hardly a walk in the park and its a very tough league to play your trade. Especially as a winger. For me Ribery is the most obvious replacement.

David Silva is also a cracking little player, but I see him as more of a central player as opposed to a winger. We did have a bid rejected for him last year if I remember rightly so I wouldn't rule that out.

The replacement doesn't have to score the number of goals Ronaldo did in the past 2-3 years as well, other players will have to step up to the plate as well as any new additions to the team. I'm expecting Tevez to move on so the replacement for him might prove crucial for us in the goal scoring department.

One thing is for sure, its going to be long a summer!

The talk of Downing and Milner is all jokes right? Surely!?

Where are you going to get the other £50m you'd need to offer Barca to part with their best player from?

Who wouldn't leave Barca anyway.

Ribery has go to be the obvious replacement.

Whoever says Milner is pacy clearly hasn't seen enough of him. he's turgid. And he can't cross.

Ashley Young on the other hand.

He might work hard but I don't recall ever seeing him "getting stuck in". I do, however, recall seeing him getting shunted off the ball with consumate ease on plenty of occasions. There's no doubt he's fucking talented, but deprive him of the space and time on the ball you get in La Liga and I suspect he wouldn't be quite so effective.

Are you lot gutted or do you think this could work out well?

Replacing Ronaldo is gonna be almost impossible, his 30+ goals per season especially, but I can see you buying Ribery, Benzema & Valencia and still having change left over.

Good business???

Surely SAF knows what he's doing.

Looking at it as an Arsenal fan, yeah it's weakened your team, for now, but come the beginning of August it's quite scary what you could do with the £80million plus what you had to spend already.

Not quite sure if this is good or bad for the rest of us who are chasing you.

I'm gutted, obviously. But in business terms, there is no better time to do this deal, when Real obviously have mountains of cash to spend, Ronaldo is still worth a lot and he wants to go.

Whatever, onwards and upwards. As long as we bring in at least 2 top TOP quality players then I will be happy enough.

And hope Madrid fall to pieces next season, obv.

I'm happy he's gone. He dived too much and his attitude sucked compared to just about every other player at the club (that's not to say I don't appreciate what he did for the club or his skill as a footballer). I think I'd actually be happy if we just dumped the money into paying off the debt and brought some young players through like Macheda and Welbeck.

I'll laugh my socks off when Barca win the league next year.

He's obviously a great player and we'll miss him, but the fact is his attitude is poor and we were building the team around him, at the expense of Rooney.

80m is a great bit of business and Rooney, who's our best player by far, can get back to doing what he does best.

The thing is it's hardly surprising news is it? Plus Ronaldo lost the backing of a lot of fans with his behaviour last summer and his petulance all season. No-on is saying he won't be missed or it will be easy replacing him but if he wants to go best get him out the door i say, and you can do a lot with 80 million.

Interesting to compare Messi and Ronaldo isn't it. They are viewed as the best players in the world at the moment. Anyone who likes football loves Messi even opposing fans applaud him. Contrast that with Ronaldo where most of his own fans are sick of him and opposing fans hate him. It's nothing to do with his ability and all to do with his attitude.

Ribery isn't going to be leaving Bayern on the cheap, and that's even less likely now that everyone is aware how much Man U will recieve in the Ronaldo deal. If Man U do get him I fucking hope they have to pay well over the odds.

That one signing alone would stop me feeling that your squad had really been weakened that much.

I am pretty surprised that you some of you guys don't feel like Valencia would be a good signing. Considering some of the performances he has pulled out in a team like Wigan with players of your calibre around him he could be fucking fantastic.

Rons gone :D

He was a cock, but he was our cock.

80 million though! Cripes! Perez doesn't fuck about.

As i've said before, I think someone like Ribery is the only replacement, if we can out-bid Chelsea and probably still Real...

I'd like to see Young or Valencia too, I think both sides need strengthening now, David Silva is a good shout also.

Maybe Tevez will think more about staying now too, hopefully. Depends on who we buy to replace Ronaldo...
