The old Man Utd Thread

I'm not really too disappointed tbh. Reaching the CL final the year after winning it is pretty good going. We could have easily lost in both the 1999 and 2008 finals were it not for the opposition hitting the post; Solskjaer and Sheringham's late goals and John Terry missing his penalty. Barcelona are worthy champions, I think if we played to our best, we would have given them a real good game. Maybe if we'd scored first.

a pretty decent match, dominated by XAVI + INIESTA, and our defence seemed to cope well enough, i guess united never recovered from ETO'Os' goal and i thought after XAVI's post hit u might come and 'punish' our 3-first choice missing defence

still i'm glad united played an anti-chelsea way even if the ball retention and pressing were ultimately similar in this case,

as some ppl mentioned we took our chances, and an unlikely superb header by MESSI(!!)

finally united have an excellent squad, probably the strongest one, and my heart was beating with haste and worry til we got our 2nd,

so well done, and hope to meet u next year again (with David VILLA^__^*)

Totally right.

I couldn't believe the Messi header when I saw it! Barca and especially Messi aren't suppossed to score amazing headed goals like that! It looked like it could have gone anywhere mind as it slammed into his face, but i'd like to think he picked his spot inch perfect. It realy showed that Messi is the total footballer the doubters said he wasn't.

Van Der Saar was helpless all match. I think he realy needs to be phased out sooner than later, Foster needs his chance to grow and proove his worth.

I feel sorry for him, Giggsy, Scholes and Nev. Chances are thats their last chance at the final, although hopefully we will have another decent go next year to stop Barca doing the double. :)

Couldn't have lost to a better (and nicer) team.

Congratulations again.

yeh man, our crosses aren't supposed to work(!!)

across the other side, this was probably also HENRY's last chance to win the only thing he needed to complete a legendary collection for a legendary player,

i guess i'll say that this is one-off match, u could draw ultimate conclusions but such is football also is transient things change quickly even within a match, within a 10mins; both squads are awesome and man u's is more complete (if with RONALDO, TEVEZ),

it just shows how against the odds it is to have won the treble (united '99, barca '09) a once a generation or two thing

COPA LLIGA CHAMPIONS

i like being 'tri-campions' ^ ^*

thanks again and let's continue next year^__^

Personally speaking I think we had a very, very good season this year - League Cup winners, World Club Cup winners Premier League winners, Semi Final in the FA cup and runners up in the Champions League. That is a very good return for me, and I think we're in good shape next year and I fully expect us to be there or there abouts when it comes to handing out the trophies.

Especially considering we didnt play very well for a good few weeks with a string of late wins and kinda iffy performances.

I don't think there was much wrong with the tactics. The team they put out and the way they approached things was what I was expecting, but I think the goal was a killer and I don't think the players coped with the set-back well enough.

They had a plan to press Barca high up the pitch and put the pressure on (similar to how they dominated Arsenal) and it looked like it was working to some extent. If they'd have scored that early goal, I think the players would have settled down and played to their potential a bit more. As it turned out, the goal knocked the stuffing out of them, and it was really disappointing to see them react like that. They looked totally lost.

Anderson and Park looked out of their depth. Ronaldo was too greedy. Giggs and Carrick didn't impose themselves on the game and didn't keep possession well enough. The defenders looked nervous whenever the ball was in their half. Rooney and O'Shea looked the most confident (despite the latter being out of position a couple of times), with Rooney in particular showing glimpses of why he's been Utd's best player this season (IMO, although Vidic was awesome). Fletcher's absence was glaring, which highlights how much of a good (and still underated) player he's been.

Looks like a lot of people are in for Ribery.

As much as Ronaldo has done for the club over the past few years, I think if he is going to go at some time, then now is the time while we can cash in and possibly replace him with a player like Ribery who is looking to move on.

His attitude in and after the final was bugging me t'other day, even more so than usual. I don't think i can put up with another summer/year of him flip flopping. Its realy time for him and Real to put up or shut the fuck up.

The last 5 seconds of this made me laugh: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/t...utd/8071216.stm

Ronaldo is clearly all about himself - which he showed by shooting at every opportunity in the final, even when a pass was clearly the better option. He's the polar opposite of Rooney in that respect, who was willing to play out of position for the team not for the glory.

The problem is that 90% of the transfer saga is created by the media so you can’t blame him for all of it. His somewhat non-committal attitude is frustrating, but hey at least he is honest. Better than Tevez who has managed to become progressively more of a bellend as his transfer saga has gone on.

I really don’t think Ronaldo will leave, and I hope he doesn’t. Ribery is a wonderful player but he doesn’t score the goals that Ronaldo does. He’s only 24 so any notion of ‘cashing in’ is daft. Madrid were happy to pay nearly 30million for a 29 year old Beckham so we could easily keep Ronaldo for a few more years and sell him when we’ve got a suitable replacement.

We’ll probably be linked with Benzema and Valencia most of the summer but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Fergie go for one or two experienced players. We’ve got more than enough youth players coming through at the moment so I can’t see too many young players being bought in this year (not to the first team anyway).

I still think this year has been something of a transition and I expect next year to be the same but you only have to look at the squad to see how much quality is there. I’ve said it before but I think there will be a lot of work this summer in trying to determine a more consistent team and style of play. It’s great to be able to mix and match for particular games (the Chelsea one springs to mind) but it’s been fairly obvious that it has restricted the teams ability to build up any momentum at times.

A mate of mine who is a City fan said that Hargraves was a bad signing before the deal actually went thro. He noted how you cant cure tendinitis. Looks like he was right and that Bayern got a brilliant price for him. Utd could really do with him as well for next year.

Here's who I've had printed on the back of my shirts:

Kanchelskis - left that summer

Butt - only got because he was the cheapest

Cantona - retired a few weeks later

Fortune - yes, Fortune. Played about 3 more games for us and left

Ronaldo - the shop did it in the wrong font

Heinze - turned out to be a right cunt

Hargreaves - dead?

My shirt printing curse has struck again.

It's not a confirmed story though is it?

Yeah, but James Ducker is usually pretty reliable. And its on the official website, so I doubt its an outright lie.

I doubt anyone realy knows when he will be back, but its not looking good.

I always avoid this by just having 'fatbob' on all my shirts.

Get some funny looks in JJB mind.

Also: Fortune lol. :)

Well it's in the 'What the papers say' section so it's far from gospel. My understanding with an injury like that is it would be hard to say how long recovery would take in the first place

Real shame if he won't be back for the start of next season. Will be interesting to see if he does go for another central midfielder, with Scholes on the way out (:() and Hargreaves injured it doesn't actually leave us with too many options. I wouldn't be surprised to see an experienced midfielder come in but he could of course go for someone younger maybe even sticking with Gibson. He has looked promising and scored a couple of absolute corkers.

I think the gossip was that Fergie liked the look of Palacios, but hes not realy likely to move after going to Spurs.

Definitely.

It's got to be a tricky decision really, how many defensive midfielders do you need when you're never going to play more than 1 in each game (as a DM of course, Hargreaves was excellent on the wing) and chances are none of them will play in over half the games we are involved in.

I've said it before but I wouldn't be surprised to see some experienced players come in for a couple of years to help move things along without competing too much with the emerging youth talent. Not sure who that would be mind! Apprently the Tevex deal will be sorted (or rejected) tomorrow, will be interesting to see how that one goes.
