The old Man Utd Thread

I heard on the radio that the other clubs came out with a press release confirming they wouldn't sue Man U for it, and I thought to myself - what the FUCK business is it of theirs what Man U do?!

I mean seriously, its not a bloody charity its a fecking competition for christ sakes!

It's absolutely ridiculous. Why would Man United give a shit about any other team's predicament except their own. A meaningless (for them) game just days before the biggest club game you can get.

Precisely. We need to worry about ourselves, sod what anyone else thinks.

I am SO hyped for this CL final. Oh man.

To be honest, I hae people who live in a big footballing country and don't have a legitimate reason not to support their local team. I go see Crusaders play week in, week out in Northern Ireland. I also support Southampton. I can understand it through familial links or whatever, but supporting Liverpool and being from somewhere else in England with a decent local team is uncool. It's worse in Italy actually, nearly every arsehole supports Juve. I don't know, it just gets up my nose. I know if I lived in England I'd love to go see the local team and feel part of the club and the whole structure that is English League Football.

You probably know about the very similar situation with us and Sheffield United (well, Neil Warnock); we fielded a weakened team against Fulham and lost. I can't even remember if that result directly sent SUFC down, but he blamed us, and still holds a grudge to this day.

Neil Warnock has a grudge with everyone and everything, the bloke is a fucking plague on legs.

That is the stupid, verging on tribalistic view that makes a lot of local fans the arrogant cunts they are.

Where I grew up (south west Oxfordshire) I supported Swindon, as passed down by my dad, but the closest Premiership club was possibly Portsmouth (at the time) and after that it would be the London clubs. Quite frankly at that distance it doesn't matter who I would have supported as I had no more of a geographical link to one club over the next.

Newcastle are in a position where they themselves are not in control of their own destiny, which is their own doing. No-one does other teams a favour in this league. We'll probably beat Hull anyway.

Exactly, and I'm sure that Newcastle know that as well. To be fair its not them going on about any kind of ridiculous legal challenge its media dicks looking for a nice juicy story out of nothing.

I really have a burning hatred of the culture of football speculation in the media, some papers just continually take the piss with the bollocks they spout to fill column inches.

Fairplay to you I guess. I'm also from N. Ireland and I wouldn't pay to watch Irish league football if it was the last league on earth. It's total and utter shite and I don't care if they are local or not.

Back to the Hull game, I always find it amusing how teams like Sheffield United and people like Neil Warnock think it is the final game of the season that got them relegated. What about the other dozen games they lost during the season, they don't matter?

Yes, every game has equal weight. I suppose it's more difficult to say what would've happened if a result had changed earlier in the season, wheras if it was a particular goal that finally condemned them it's easier to make the case. Still completely barmy though.

Interesting how the people (nobody in the disscussion in this thread by all accounts) people who are pre-emptively critisising United for playing the team we want aren't doing the same to Aston Villa or Chelsea, both of which will have just as much impact on the way it goes down (pardon the pun) and have literally nothing to play for let alone a Champions League final 3 days later (okay, Chelsea have a final the following week but still).

Its barmy I tell thee. :o

The most ridiculous suggestion I've seen about the rammifications for us fielding an under-strength team is that Benitez will lobby for a points deduction for breaking the rules :o And from the guardian of all places

it would be no surprise if a certain Liverpool-based Spaniard urged the authorities to impose a deduction of, oooh, four points.

Yeah I'm sure it would be a surprise actually

:( The bit about Liverpool in that Guardian article is one of the worst pieces of baiting by a Journalist I have ever seen. Hilarious.

Apparently the Sun have a copy of a leaked team sheet which comprises of the team that everyone expects to play anyway. Also ignoring that Ferdinand isn’t guaranteed to play either. Great work! With Giggs in the centre I imagine we will play slightly differently than against Arsenal with Anderson and Carrick playing alongside each other in midfield and Giggs ahead of them.

I’m getting really quite hyped about the final now. Barcelona are starting to big themselves up, Iniesta has said he will be fit and Messi says they deserve the title. Guardiola has said he knows what our weaknesses are, although any research he did on Chelsea clearly didn’t help him then. It could be a really awesome final, there is no way United will play open attacking football but the pressure of Barca with the counter attacking ability of ourselves should make it intriguing. My only worry is that we get a ref as gash as in the two semi final second legs.

This final could be, should be, EPIC.

I don't know where I'm watching the game yet or with who, but regardless it's going to be one of the scariest and most exciting moments of my life, I'm sure. I can't wait. I can't bloody wait. :(

I don't think (like the rest of us) he expected Chelsea to defend quite as much as they did during the tie.

Maybe, but after the first tie you'd think he would have told them to at last have a crack from distance now and again.

It's very interesting watching how the build up to the game is unfolding, from both the Spanish and English sides.

The Spanish claim that it's the English who are bigging themselves up, with quotes from Terry Venables saying that Barcelona can't hold a candle to Ferguson's team, and that they don't have a chance in hell of winning on Wednesday. Barcelona fans are perfectly happy with this - they want to be the underdogs.

And now I read your post where you say there are quotes from Barcelona squad members saying they know United's weaknesses, etc., seemingly wanting to make themselves favourites. This from a team which has been down to earth and almost downplayed their entire season up to now, by the way.

This is my take on the matter: the Spanish and English media are fucking shit. Roll on Wednesday!

Quite agree, it does seem strange that Barca have been saying these things, but as usual they are only likely to be responding to stupid questions form journalists. Not entirely sure what Venebles was banging on about though!

It's a funny game in that there really isn't an underdog. Both teams will be confident of winning and equally fearful of losing.
