Oh, and another thing. Poor show the Arsenal 'fans' who left after 67 minutes. Shocking. You support the team, not go to see them win.

Liverpool 4-1 *cough*

Still maybe Flletchers sending off will shut up the biased conspiracy nobs for oooh a week

Fletcher :D

The arrogance of UEFA making a rule which never takes into account the possability that a referee could be wrong. Seriously, what is the point in making sure you can never overturn a red card? What if the ref went mental and sent everyone off? ;)

Given the extreme circumstances, I think maybe Cesc should have spoken up for Fletcher too, he knew he got the ball. With 13 odd minutes left there was no way they were going to get 5 goals, penalty or no. I dunno, its not his fault, I just feel terrible for Fletcher.

Awesome attitude you have there ;)

To be fair, it's commendable that Fletcher showed the commitment and bravery to take the chance of making such a last ditch tackle (and the skill to pull it off, even if the referee didn't see it that way). With the game dead, there are plenty of players who would have thought twice. Although I suppose with Ferguson's beady eye on your performance, thinking of his team sheet for Rome, maybe going for it would be the safest option.

I bet if the same thing were to happen to Messi tomorrow (who admittedly is half the player Fletcher is when up against Chelsea), Platini would suddenly demand a change to the rules.

Also noteworthy is that Fletcher didn't burst into tears over it. Watch and learn, JT.

Just been going through the Uefa regulations:

Article 23

Reasons for protest

23.01 A protest is directed against the validity of a match result. It is based on a player’s eligibility to play, a decisive breach of the regulations by the referee, or other incidents influencing the match.

23.02 Protests concerning the state of the field of play must be submitted to the referee in writing by the relevant officials before the match. If the state of the field of play becomes questionable in the course of the match, the team captain must inform the referee, in the presence of the captain of the opposing team, orally without delay.

23.03 Protests cannot be lodged against factual decisions taken by the referee.

23.04 A protest against a caution or expulsion from the field of play after two cautions is admissible only if the referee’s error was to mistake the identity of the player.

Fletcher was a straight red. Interesting...

Even if we could somehow appeal I reckon the ref would say the sending off was because Fletcher was tugging on him or something.

I think Fletcher's a very big loss no matter who we end up playing. He's been great in the big games like against Chelsea and Inter off the top of my head and is the most effective enforcer we have in midfield. Note he didn't play in the heavy Liverpool defeat. If we play the same formation in the final it'll probably have to be Anderson, Carrick and Scholes/Giggs which will just be lacking that bit of bite.

The point is to try to hold the line about refs' decisions being final, so football doesn't end up like Formula 1. Which is a worthy aim, but it's hard to swallow when it leads to injustices like this. When the stakes are so high, it seems to me that making an exception is warranted (like when the powers that be rightly broke the rules to send Zidane off in the World Cup Final). A policy of exceptionalism probably wouldn't be a sound position for a governing body to take, I suppose, especially if they ever had to defend their decision making in the court of arbitration for sport.

I suppose there's no good reason why there's no appeal process for bans following red cards: you could change that without breaking the principle about the ref's decision being final in the actual match.

Yellow cards cant be rescinded, which is silly because they can still cause suspensions when they accumulate and therefore unjustly affect future games. Red cards can be overturned and often are, though, so I've got high hopes that Fletch will play in the final. He's definitely in our first XI for me, so it would be a loss, not a huge loss because our squad's so great, but a loss.

Yes, we should push for this. It's not the referee's fault at all, mistakes like that happen, bloody stupid rule though. How many other chances will Darren Fletcher get to play in a champions league final? Very unfair to him, as I've said before it's not a terrible blow to the club as we have such excellent stand-ins, but he deserves to at least play his part.

A mate of mine was just on Sky Sports News giving off about the Fletcher decision last night. They asked him about a petition he set up, "Justice for Fletcher". I thought he did rather well in explaining why UEFA should adapt the FA's approach for rescinding unjust red cards. Fletchers last night was certainly unjust!

If you want to sign up go to http://www.petitiononline.com/qwerty09/petition.html

<_<

EDIT: Oops fixed link!

Graham Poll reckons Fletch deserved to be sent of. What a fucking dickhead.

Poll probably thought he deserved 3 yellow cards.
