The old Man Utd Thread

Although some of the passing has been a bit off, we look quite slick and fluid up front tonight. I think that's why Berbatov doesn't always look entirely convincing for us. He's undoubtedly technically excellent but his more ponderous style doesn't always seem to totally gel with the way we attack best.

Anyway I hope we don't rue all those missed chances.

Just came back. I spent most of the evening wishing that Tevez or Nani would come on, they must both really be wondering where they'll be next season. Instead, Giggs and Scholes play the full ninety. Makes no sense to me. No Nani meant Rooney had to cover out wide. No Tevez meant Rooney was up on his own a lot. Good result, mediocre performance. I hope these two players get a game at some point in the future.

Anderson made a great pass for the first goal, but he was a bit iffy with the simple stuff. Still, used his bum to great effect throughout.

I think people should be a little easier on Berbatov. It's his first season at the club, the entire team has been out fo form for large parts of the season and he's played while not fit as well (have to question Fergie on that one!).

Just watched highlights of the first half and Anderson was awesome! Was showing up all across the front, making runs and being a real nuisance in midfield.

Decent game. We looked dangerous going forward and reasonably solid at the back. Anderson and Giggs were immense. One hand back on the trophy now.

Nani has come up again. I hope we sell him, he's been shit for us and wont cut it. Tevez is a guy we need, but sadly he thinks he'll be moving on now. On the subject of Berbatov I read this earlier,

Berbatov has been responsible for setting up a sixth of United’s 54 goals in the Barclays Premier League — only Frank Lampard, the Chelsea midfield player, Robin van Persie, the Arsenal forward, and Steed Malbranque, the Sunderland midfield player, have as many assists — while four of his 13 goals in all competitions have been winners.

Dig a little deeper, though, and the picture becomes less flattering. Only one of his goals has come against a team in the top six — in the 3-0 win at home to Chelsea in January — while he has found the net once in his past nine matches and has not scored in the Champions League since October 21, the one arena in which Ferguson felt the forward would bring an added dimension to United’s attack.

Delve farther still and an alarming trend begins to develop, one that helps to explain why United have failed to replicate the fast, free-flowing football of last season.

Partnerships have been a fixture of Ferguson’s teams, but in the 20 games that Berbatov and Wayne Rooney have started together, they have combined to score only once, in the 4-0 demolition of West Bromwich Albion in October. Rooney has not set up one of Berbatov’s goals, while the Bulgarian has been involved in only one of the England forward’s 17, a troubling statistic that becomes all the easier to understand when you consider that of the 551 passes United made against Sunderland in December, only four were between the front two, Berbatov and Rooney. That was by no means an isolated statistic. No wonder this may be the first time in four seasons that United do not finish as the league’s top or joint-top goalscorers.

Remember how fucking good we were last season with Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo all throwing themselves forward interchanging positions? We've totally lost that this season. I don't think he's a good fit at United and ironically, I think Macheda is exactly the (type of) player we need. A real centre forward.

Remember how good Scholes and Carrick were last season? How awesome Evra and Brown were? If the entire team is playing well and Berbatov isn't cutting it then I would happily agree that he hasn't been good enough but I just don't think this seasons perofrmances have warranted undue criticism of a single player.

We were also very very good when Saha was fit in the first half of the season before that. The second half of that season, when Saha was mostly injured, we started to struggle a bit. I've defended Berbatov a lot but I do wonder if he is really the right player for our style.

Don't get me wrong I think the guy's an amazing player but he was an extravagant and maybe unnecessary purchase. We were just fine last season, a more dynamic player to suit the already unstoppable formula we had last season would've made more sense. He's had flashes of brilliance and the odd fantastic game but on the whole I don't think he's suited to us, or us to him.

I made specific reference to our style of attacking play, which has completely changed since Berbatov's introduction. Your examples are meaningless.

It's all about how much influence the other players had on the play of those 3 then isn't it. Would they have scored so many goals if our midfield played like they have this season? I just think that comparing the two is a futile task as there are so many different variables.

This article is a bit old but I think it does a good job of arguing why Berbatov may not be the best fit for us. I think the first three paragraphs sum it up really well actually.
