The old Man Utd Thread

Saw the goal on the news, what beezer it was! Apparently "we scraped through 1-0" ;)

Depends what your definition of scraping through is. If it's scoreline, fair enough, as if they scored, you would've been out.

In terms of genuine threat and match incident, nah - they were very poor tonight and never really looked like scoring.

See, this is why Ronaldo should have the opportunity to play through the middle, or drift inside as much as he can. He's just so damn good at finishing. Even when he drags a ball it's low, fast and accurate. I mean, we've got plenty of players who can take a shot, but Ronaldo's strike rate is a little ridiculous. If he rests well over the summer, and doesn't have some transfer saga hanging over his head come the start of next season, I don't see why he can't get 40-odd goals again. He's hit 21 this season, without any particular praise.

Rio and Vidic back together and the defence is solid as fuck once more. Huge night for the rest of the season. Now if Sir Alex can just forget that he paid £30m for Berbatov so we can get the attack back to last year's level.

you are; defend like fuck and give it to Ronaldo when we get it back. ;)

hahaaa, na seriously, what a strike from Ronaldo! Porto looked kind of clueless around Utds box, after they lost Lucheo or whatever his name is.

We played so differently to the last game. When Hulk got it (or their other winger that had to go off, forgot his name) got the ball, they had miles of space to run into. Pulled our defence all over the place. Carrick was awful that game, but him, Giggs and Anderson kept it much tighter this time round. Even Ronaldo was chasing loose balls, so the defence wasn't left on their own. Plus Neville wasn't playing, which was a bonus.

There's no way Ronaldo will be at ManU next season. It's written on every line of Ferguson's face.

While we hardly scraped through, it was bloody nerve racking once we decided to settle for 1-0 (around the hour mark). Porto had so much posession in our half but just couldn't do anything with it.

Berba was dire. He looked completely vacant and I can't remember one pass, one move, that was in any way remotely special except for the very last move of the first half. He looks troubled to be honest - I think something is happening behind the scenes. His cantona posturing is probably going down like a tonne of shit when the end product is so vapid.

Anderson was very lively though. Really scrapped it and won alot of fifty-fifty situations. Special shout out to Oshea as well - did a very good job at RB and deserves praise.

Anderson gives the ball away far too much from what I've seen of him but he looked good in parts.

Anderson was great last season, if he'd had a proper run of games this season he'd be even better, but injury and the strengh of our squad made that impossible. He played as if he hadn't had a game in a while, but his running and strength were there. Berbatov held up the ball well, and wasn't exactly given much support by the ref. He was knocked about all game, played well enough despite. I dunno about Ronaldo either, Madrid seem a bit toothless at the moment and I don't know why he'd want to go there. There's plenty of other clubs in sunnier, more fashionable locations than Manchester that might want him, though.

The guy is one of the best players in the world. He has dreamed since boyhood (less than a decade ago) to play for real madrid. The only way he'd not go is if they were in such shit shape european football was in jeapody, which it isn't. He (perhaps rightly) believes he can propel any team he touches to greatness and wants the challenge. Look at Gerrard at Liverpool for a similar story. He's gone. End of. Sign here. Toodle-loo.

Some are saying he's definitely staying, and some are saying he's definitely going; but we can't know what's going on in the lad's mind, and everything to the contrary is just baseless speculation. After last summer, I'm not even sure he knows what he wants.

What do you mean? He wants to go and always has done - he's said it multiple times and got into a lot of trouble for it. He didn't go last season because SAF wouldn't let him go - no one wants to keep a player against his will, especially a player of his genius stature and foetal emotional maturity. The timing and way in which it all happened last season gave ManU the moral edge but that won't be the case now - SAF et al will be prepared for the move this time and will spend big to compensate.

As good as he is at what he does, if the figures being quoted are anywhere near realistic, then it would be just stupid not to cash in and bring in one or two players who can be just as effective, like Ribery for instance.

Most of the stories about him wanting to leave have come from Spanish newspapers though. Madrid newspapers, to be more specific. Marca, to be even more specific. Say what you want, but there's room for doubt (either way), especially how crap stories have come out in the past just to sell papers.

No. He's said it. With his mouth. So has his agent and various members of his familly. You only have to look at the complete silence from Man U on the matter all season and absolutely no word from Ronaldo on his future - not even the smallest of hints at loyalty to Old Trafford - to see which way the wind is blowing. But still, if you want to belive, believe. Stranger things have happened.

Hey, I'm not believing either way. All I'm saying is you can't know. There is nothing concrete here, just rumours and alleged quotes. His agent? Agents stir up shit all the time, they want the transfer more than anything because they get a cut.

Not really. He gets asked about his future at almost every press conference, and his reply is always the same: "I am very happy at United, I think this is the right club for me".

No one knows where he'll be next season, but I have a feeling he'll stick around.

It was a wonder strike, not many players even take the shot on never mind bloody score from there. Stunning!

Hopefully we can play like that to the end of the season, I'm just glad we managed to get a clean sheet - very pleasing indeed.

I think the clean sheet was the best thing about the result really. Ferdinand had a very calming influence on the defence and the first clean sheet since March is hopefully going to be a building block
