I think that puts our 2-2 into perspective as at least an outside chance

I agree. Then again I think it's more of an outside chance, though in fairness you did say at least.

Dunno, having calmed down and had chance to reflect it wasn't that atrocious a result or a cup ending thing when you reflect on how bad we were on the night.

1-0 sees us through, though a clean sheet is looking tricky after Tuesday. That said, if we get Rio back and somehow restore composure, it's not impossible given how we've defended for 90% of the season.

Even if we did concede we should be able to score again and at the very least take it to pens if not win 2-1. It really is Captain Obvious, but if we score first then it gives us a great chance. We proved in that spell in the second half we can score against them.

Definitely feel more optimistic now like I say, especially as a good win on Saturday and we can pop straight off to Portugal happy and have a mini break for a day or two before the Wednesday game.

If we can get some confidence back then we've got a great chance of winning at Porto, we've had some great results in the past when the chips are down so I wouldn't write of our chances in any game.

Hopefully, a win and a good performance at Sunderland will give us a bit of momentum to take into the away leg. We always play our best football when we know we 'have' to win, so I'm sure we'll make a good go at it at least.

I don't think Fabio is injured, he's not listed on Physio Room anyway.

I've just read in the Manchester Evening News that Rooney may be out tomorrow.

Personally, I think it's a load of bollocks, but they're saying that he picked up a knock to his ribs the other night and was in pain afterwards.

I think the Glazers have made the club a lot more profitable, if they find the debt unmanageable, then they will sell the club on. Of course, it'll be worth less as the debt still has to be serviced, but I think they'd still make a massive profit. Or they could sell some of their American properties and clear the debt with the resulting cash. Investment banks are hungry for cash, so they could probably negotiate a better deal if they were to repay it quickly. Either way, they'd be crazy to want to service such massive amounts of interest for years to come, and besides if they don't do something soon, the debt's rising faster than our profits which is a terrible situation to be in.

Liverpool are about £300m in debt, also due to a leverage takeover, and Chelsea are about £600m in debt, due to Abramovich giving his money to the club as a loan and not a donation. Sometimes it's nice to be Arsenal, isn't it?

Arsenal have debt too. The stadium has about twenty years left on the repayments but I think Arsenal renegotiated it into a much lower interest, long term deal a few years ago. But the thing is, and why I am so against any takeover of this kind for Arsenal, all the money is ours. It doesn't get used for anything else but Arsenal. Granted I would kill each and every member of this forum for Arsenal to win the Champions League but the long term health of the club has to be number 1 priority.

Yeah, but once they've sold all the Highbury apartments, and had a few seasons selling season tickets in the fancy seats (which bring in about as much as the whole of Highbury did), that'll be the end of that. They have a very comfortable financial future ahead of them, compared to the rest of the big four. Wenger talks a lot about being 'self-reliant' and they really are. I guess I'm not sure if Glazer is a good or a bad thing, but I do envy Arsenal for their finances.

How can you expect to sell a company that makes a £45 mill loss per year (and exceptional year at that, in which you both won the double and apparently made £20mill in the transfer market)? Surely their only option is to re-finance the loans so the rate of interest is below the club's operating profit, and begin to pay it off that way?

That's a genuine question, by the way. I don't have a fucking clue about anything like this beyond what's written in that there article.

The company itself is sound, it's the debt on it that's causing it to make a loss, due to massive interest payments. The debt was saddled on the company due to the Glazer takeover, which was something called a "leveraged takeover", which is fancy talk for them putting up nearly none of the money, and borrowing most of it. Then putting that debt on the company, rather than themselves, and the interest was really massive, presumably because the bank saw it as a risk. Highly leveraged takeovers by investment banks is one reason we're in this global financial mess, on a slightly related note.

If someone gave the Glazers back what they actually put into the company, along with a bit extra seeing as they have grown it a bit, then they could pay off the debt themselves (it's sizeable, so it'd probably have to be some conglomerate or something unfortunately), thus overall paying just about what the club's worth overall. I don't doubt that there's many potential investors who see how an already fundamentally profitable club could grow from here, so I think it would sell rather easily. They could also list the club, sell some shares and use the money from that to pay off some of the debt. If they wanted to pay back much of it, though, they'd have to relinquish some control.

Big game tomorrow (as they all are this time of the season!). Could really do with showing some, in fact any, improvement over the last couple of weeks. Doesn't look like we'll have anybody returning form injury so the team may be a little patchy still. on the upside Rafael and Brown should be back within 1/2 weeks so we will actually have some proper right backs (Neville aside) fit!

I also didn't know that Jaap Stam has rejoined the club as our South American scout!

He has been our scout for some time

I was just thinking how missing wes and owen hargreaves have really left us short in denfensive options but how strong we will be next season at the back !

I also didn't know that but it has warmed my heart. I fucking love Jaap Stam. He's a big Dutchman, don't you know. One of my favourite ever United memories is Ivan Zamorano backing into Stam in the 1999 Champions League quarter final against Inter, and bouncing straight off him while Stam didn't even flinch. An Ivan Drago moment if ever I saw one.

Foster, Neville, Evans, Vidic, O'Shea, Park, Carrick, Scholes, Rooney, Berbatov, Tevez.

Subs: Kuszczak, Evra, Ronaldo, Anderson, Giggs, Nani, Macheda.

Flabbergasted.

Interesting team - hope it pays off

To be honest Evra has looked like he needed a rest, he's been well below par for a few weeks now. I would have rested Carrick too personally, the two of them have been looking extremely tired lately. Surprised to see Scholes considering he's been poor lately too.

Well to be frank nearly everyone has been poor recently so....I'm a little surprised Fletcher isn't in there because he's been one of our only decent performers but I guess he's being saved for Wednesday.
