The old Man Utd Thread

Apparently we played O'Shea and Neville at centre-back, and Abonglahor destroyed them with his pace. Pretty embarrassing, seeing as Liverpool just thrashed them 5-0, but we did have some key players missing. Nothing better than a win to get your confidence back though, especially a win that takes you back to the top of the table with a game in hand.

Everton beat a very good Wigan side by a large margin, they'll certainly give us a good game in the cup.

We need to start a song for Macheda based around Tequila. That was one of the greatest goals of Sir Alex's reign, totally up there with Giggsy's run and blast against Arsenal in the treble winning season in terms of timing and magnitude. Before Ronaldo levelled it was a totally abysmal performance, never really looked capable of getting an equaliser never mind a winner, season draining away. Then BAM, motherfucker, BAM!

We started that way, then when Fergie came to his senses and realised Carew was taking the piss out of Neville we shifted O'Shea to centre back and we looked better, but fuck me Gary Neville is well and truly past it. I know he's just come back from another injury but he's been shit all season. Tevez was woeful, Nani produced his usual fucking shit, the passing was laughable and the movement non-existent. The win papered over a dysmal display.

BUT.

FUCK ME IT WAS GLORIOUS. MACHEDA!!!

I haven't celebrated a goal like that since we got an injury time equaliser at home to Wigan in 2006.

Now the euphoria is wearing off i think we need to look at clearing some of the deadwood. We need to sell Nani while we can still get something decent for him. His sole contribution seems to be to score a goal from outside the box every 10 games. Tevez's endless running is easily coped with by any half-decent team. Neville is clearly past it. Van Der Sar surely only has one season max left.

Whatever happened to Tosic? Is he playing in the reserves?

I thought Neville did OK, it's not like we had any other choice. He did better at RB than in the centre but it was a case of picking the lesser of two evils, lack of speed against Young or lack of height against Carew. Unfortunately Fergie got it wrong at the start, we looked far more solid with O'Shea in the centre.

I think Nani will probably leave, he did whip in a couple of lovely crosses but whats the point with Tevez and Giggs up front. I won't complain about Tevez's performance in the game, he ran the entire time he was on the pitch after playing at altitude less than a week ago.

No idea about Tosic, I think he may be injured, or at least short of fitness.

As much as Fergie cocked up sticking Neville in the centre at the start you have to give him credit for bringing on Macheda when he could have easily bought on Park or Wellbeck. Fortune favours the brave after all. Fucking brilliant goal too, Mrs Phresh was upstairs and I think she thought i'd been shot I screamed so loud!

I noticed we were linked with Ribery. I certainly think Nani will go in the Summer along with one or two others - Fletcher maybe. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Gary Neville. I can't see him getting many games next season so wonder if he'll go elsewhere - how old is he now?

What game were you watching? He was shit. He's forgotten how to defend. His backing off before Villa's second goal was infuriating, he should have closed down or got a foot in.

And Fletcher's going nowhere, he's one of Fergie's favourite sons and rightly so, he's been brilliant not only this season but for quite a while now. Really matured in the last 2 years.

Yeah, Neville was pretty bad unfortunately, he should have had a say in stopping at least one of Villa's goals. Both cam from unmarked headers which should/would have been marked by Rio of Vidic.

Concerning Nani, he is annoyingly wastful most of the time, and never seems to be able to pull in the same direction of as the rest of the team, pretty selfish player. Saying that, he does have flashes of amazing skill, and is worth keeping around for another few years ust to see if he settles down and learns to think more. Thats what happened with Ronaldo after all.

Am likeing the Ribery rumours, for me he is potentially the only replacement out there for Ronaldo if he goes. Hes our kind of player, love to see him here.

I don't think thats fair at all, he definately should have done better for the second goal but apart from taking out Carew he could have done little for the first. After initially coming back from injury and playing a few games he was pretty good but he seems to havegone backwards with the recent injury. I suspect he'd have done better with Ferdinand inside him too.

Ahhh ODB I have two great loves. I was raised a United fan (4th generation in my family) but growing up in Blackpool of course I had a season ticket for many many years at Bloomfield. I still think we're pretty safe, there's only one spot left for relegation (bar another last day of season escape by Southampton) and Norwich are woeful. Hoolahan back to Bloomfield if they go down?

I still can't get past those many many years where whenever he got the ball he'd give it away. He was SO shit for SO long and the only explanation for his constant first team drop ins was cleary some homoerotic tie with SAF.

WHAT?!?

Anyway. So, what a game it turned it out to be. First half was very poor, played like a team with no confidence not to mention we seemed very very nervous. The second half was such a turn a round though. We dug in and Ronaldo's second goal was vital for me, once that went in we had the belief and we started to look a lot more dangerous. I was very proud of the team in the way they fought they way back into the game even though the chips were down.

Neville didn't have the best of games, but I thought he got better as the game went on. He's had no football of late and could of done better on one or two occasions but overall I wasn't too displeased with his performance. Think we all know he shouldn't really have started at centre back, he was much better and right back.

Special mention for the match winner too, thought he was busy when he came on without really doing anything, was always looking for the ball and wasn't shy in getting involved, which for a 17 year old kid you can't ask for more. But oh how he gave us more, simply stunning strike for the winner and I was over the moon for the lad. If its one thing I've seen from him from watching him in the reserves is that he knows where the back of the net is. Ole was full of praise for him not too long ago, he'd have been proud of that strike himself.

Hopefully this will give the momentum now for the remaining games, key players coming back from injury/suspension now too so we're in a great position to push on.

Nani's crossing was poor I thought, rarely did he clear the first man at the near post. Gaz wasn't great either, but there aren't many defenders who cope with Gabby's pace or Carew's strength particularly well and despite the two goals, how many clear cut chances were Villa afforded despite their superior play at times?
