The old Man Utd Thread

I'm pretty sure this is the sort of crap that you get all indignant about in your thread.

Not really - doesn't bother me too much. It bothers me more when people rise to it.

Anyway, sorry for stinking up your thread. I did look around for Hodgson's pre-match comments before the Prem game with you and how defeatist he was before a ball was even kicked, but had no luck.

Not wanting to start a debate about it - just an attempt to convince you that my original post wasn't a completely baseless comment.

Anderson had a poor game by his standards but he still has all the qualities to be a truly exceptional midfielder. I've said it before as well but if you look at a lot of his 'missed' passes they are actually incredibly clever it's just that the other attacking players aren't on the same wavelength. If he was given a consistent run I would expect the attacking players to learn more about how he plays and more passes would come off.

His shooting is appalling, when's he gonna score?

I watched him at Old Trafford once and during the pre match warm up he was having a few shots on goal against Ben Foster, he rarely hit the target and when he did it was easily saved.

His shooting isn't that bad, I think its very much a mental thing. He'll get it eventually and then hopefully he'll get the confidence to score more often. In terms of technique and everything he's fine, so maybe its just a mental block thing at the moment.

He'll be a fantastic footballer in the future, I'm sure of it. He's got everything in his locker to succeed, the thing he lacks is experience. He's only 20 years of age, and has played less than 100 games in his professional career. Even less for Man Utd in the more traditional central midfield role. So he has loads to learn, central midfield is probably the hardest position to play, and experiance is vitally important.

I personally think he's a great prospect and should he fulfil the obvious potential he has he'll become one of the best in his position. I think we just have to patience with him.

I was at the game yesterday as a "neutral". Well, as neutral as you can be as a Liverpool fan watching Man U. And it was an absolute slaughter. They had no idea how to keep Tevez under control, he just did whatever he wanted.

Materazzi and Burdisso were Mourinho's first choice for the big match but they both got injured in the first half hour yesterday. I'd argue that Maicon-Zanetti-Cordoba-Maxwell is still a hell of a back four, if a little weak in the air. Jose seems to like Santon though so I expect he'll be targeted again mid-week.

He can't possibly play Titus Rivas again...

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been passed fit for Wednesday's Champions League return leg against Inter Milan at Old Trafford. He limped out of Saturday's FA Cup tie at Fulham with an ankle injury but returned to training on Tuesday.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Ferdinand and John O'Shea, back after a heel problem, will play as United look to progress after a goalless first leg. "They both trained for the first time today and that was important," he said.

Ferdinand should partner Nemanja Vidic in central defence, with O'Shea filling the right-back slot in the continued absence of Gary Neville, Wes Brown and Rafael da Silva. But the remainder of Ferguson's squad are available for selection.

...and Mourinho knows exactly how to deal with it, if you don't think having a manager who was highly capable in the Premiership (indeed enough to win it) will make a difference compared to one who was an abject failure and had not clue 1 about how to play in it then you're mad.

I'm not saying you won't win, but you won't thrash them because Jose knows how to play against Premiership teams and will know what he needs his players to do to attempt and grind out a result. I don't expect it'll be pretty tonight.

I'm not disagreeing about Mourinho, it's the players who have no experience of premiership football and I don't think any amount of coaching or whatever from Mourinho can solve that. You only have to look at the chump he put in the centre of defence for the first half of the game in Milan for that.

I'm pretty terrified tonight. I dreamt twice about the game last night, the third time in total! We were losing 10-2 in the first dream and lost 2-0 on penalties in the second so I won't be looking too much into them. I didn't see much two weeks ago to make me think we should be scared of Inter but the away goal issue looms large and I just hope we haven't missed our chance. I find it hard to believe they'll be so lacklustre again.

Interested to see what the team will be anyway, mainly the midfield. I wouldn't be surprised to see Scholes or Giggs in there considering they didn't play Saturday, and with Rooney back I could see Park maybe being dropped.

The two starting line-ups:

VDS

O'Shea-Rio-Vidic-Evra

Ronaldo-Carrick-Scholes-Giggs

Berbatov-Rooney

Cesar

Maicon-Cordoba-Samuel-Santon

Zanetti-Stankovic-Cambiasso-Vieria

Ibrahimovic-Balotelli

I'm interested to see how Balotelli does, he's clearly got potential. It looks like it's United's attacking midfielders vs Inter's defensive ones...

Inter have clearly missed a trick down our right. O'Shea isn't the best RB in the world (nor the worst) but there is no way Cambiasso and Viera are going to offer any pace or width to test him. If we can keep the midfield tight we should control that area easily.

Surprised there's no Park or Fletcher in there, very attacking I suppose. It's a big, big pitch, not quite sure about the wisdom of playing such a narrow formation. With Berbatov and Rooney dropping deep as they like to, or drifting out wide, it'll be difficult for them to keep their shape. I'm quite hopeful, to be honest.
