The old Man Utd Thread

Yeah, fair dos, perhaps not a fair comparrison. I still like the charity option best personally, but I don't realy think it matters where the sponsor's market is, its their money, so its their loss if advertising doesn't make any impression on the foriegn markets (in this case UK). Look at AIG, i'd honestly never heard of them before the shirt deal, and I couldn't be less interested in their trade atm. Its like Samsung advertising MRI scanners between Coronation Street ad breaks. But, to be honest United are probably making as much, if not more money in Saudi Arabia/Asia already anyway, so in that context the deals make great sense.

From my point of view, if they aren't going with the charity option, as long as the shirt doesn't look too awful and they aren't advertising something dubious which has potential to badly influence people (kids), like all the alcohol and gambling stuff in the premiership (not having a go) i'll be happy enough.

They have both Bud and Smirnoff as pitchside sponsors already, not to mention Betfred. But they do seem to have been keen to avoid such things being the main sponsor, apparently that was a reason they jilted Mansion last time around.

When AIG were announced they kept it well under wraps right up until it was official (we work closely with their commercial team and there wasn't even a hint) so I'm not even gonna guess I don't think.

I think my main concern with betting and alcohol advertising is with replica shirts. I know that when I was younger I and my parents were getting a new TV I would pester them for the Sharp one etc.

I think hero worship for youngsters of the players means that anything you slap on a shirt is likely to have an effect on the kids who wear the replica shirts or see Ronaldo on TV. Its not quite the same thing with billboards in a stadium.

But anyway, this is another debate altogether.

Mixed New on the Injury Front

Sir Alex has revealed Brazil midfielder Anderson is expected to miss three weeks of football after injuring his ankle against Derby County.

Fans feared the worst after the 20-year-old was stretchered from the pitch at the final whistle.

"We sent Anderson for a scan and there’s no break," Sir Alex said. "But there was some ligament damage. We think he’ll be out for three weeks."

That prognosis will come as a relief to United supporters, although the boss did have some other, less pleasing, news to report.

"Nani suffered a groin injury and he’ll be out for a week. Jonny Evans will be out for three weeks."

In fact, United will be forced to field a patched-up side against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday as further injuries have severely limited the manager's choices.

"The ones who are out [for the Spurs game] are Rio Ferdinand, Anderson, Nani, Rafael, Patrice Evra, Wayne Rooney, Jonny Evans and Ji-sung Park [hamstring injury]."

More to follow...

Leaves us with 9 players not available for selection now I think, good news regarding Anderson though as most expected a break of some sort. By the same token, a blow regarding Evans.

No mention of Wes Brown so maybe he's close to being to get some first team action!

Jesus, we're really down to the bare bones in defence now aren't we?

It's a good job Redknapp's said that the league is the priority for Spurs now, so tomorrow shouldn't be too bad. West Brom on Tuesday shouldn't be too much of a hassle either.

Will Rooney be available for the Everton game the following week then? I'm off to that and I'd love to see him play against them.

Didn't mention Hargreaves either though, and we know hes out for the year.

But i've never wanted Brown more in my life at this stage!

Imagine if Vidic got injured?

So who do we have now to fill in?

The other night it was:

Raphael/Fletcher--- Neville--- Evans/Chester--- O'Shea

Sooo...

Neville--- Chester/Carrick--- Vidic--- O'Shea

?

Well we did off load Silvestre and Pique so it has taken it's toll. I guess if Fabio was fit he would be getting some games and O'Shea could move into the centre? I hope he gets fit soon - I really want to see what he's like

Fabio is fit now and as been brought into the squad, as has Eckersley. So we might see a back four of Neville, Vidic, O'Shea and Fabio. Or we could always bring in Fletch at right back move Neville to the centre and keep O'Shea at left back.

Rio and Brown both on course for a return for the Everton game on 3rd of Feb too by the looks of it (baring a change to the date).

With Nani and Park both being injured Tosic might get a chance too at some point over the next 2 weeks.

Fergie continues....

"We still have Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo fit. But we will have to call on some young players.

"I could play Darren Fletcher at right back, with Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic and John O’Shea, which would give me an experienced back four. But I’ve called in Richard Eckersley and Fabio [da Silva], who could be involved."

There was another good news story to emerge from Friday's press conference: Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown are expected to be fit to face Everton on Monday 2 February. (If either United or Everton require an FA Cup fourth round replay, the game will be brought forward to Saturday 31 Jan).

"Rio and Wes could be back for the Everton game, if the match is on Monday," the boss said.

"It’s not the best position to be in. January is a difficult month. We’ve talked a lot about having a winter break to get rid of the strains you pick up in January. But it’s not to be. The result is that the strains become injuries and the players miss games."

Would be great to see Fabio play if nothing else!

Can't wait to see both of them prowling the wings. Getting up to hilarious twin japery ;)

I imagine Neville will play in the centre with Fletcher at RB and O'Shea on the left. Fabio on the bench in case we need an attacking option. I think the gap in defensive cover is possibly due to selling Shawcross to Stoke, Ferguson never wanted him to go. Silvestre was never a great CB and we didn't need the cover at LB. Pique always had concentration issues and Ferguson never seemed confident in him.

Great news that nobody seems to be out for more than a few weeks. With any luck, and we might need some at this rate, we should have a near full squad come the run in and CL games.

Spurs first team are playing shit at the moment so who knows what kind of team will show up, and how they will play, tomorrow.

I seem to remember him throwing Pique in against Chelsea and he looked comfortable enough. I think it was more of case of Pique wanting some first team football and the chance of going back to his beloved Barcelona being the factor in deciding to sell him. Also the fact that Evans does look the better defender.

I think we'll play a strong team on Saturday, I know we've got WBA on the Tuesday but I expect Vidic, Tevez, and Berba to play. The one thing we don't want is a draw, fitting in another game in already hectic scheduled would be a bloody nightmare!

I'd like to see a lineup of VDS - Nevile - Vidic - O'Shea - Fabio - Ronaldo - Carrick - Scholes - Tosic - Tevez - Berbatov.

I don't think it's likely we'll play that team, but its some thing I'd like to see. Someone on the Caf mentioned that Tosic as played left back on a number of occasions in his career too so I guess that might be an option if need be.

Not much, that was just a snippet from the BBC live text thing:

Team news: A bit of call my bluff from Sir Alex Ferguson and Harry Redknapp ahead of the Man Utd-Spurs FA Cup tie was it? Both hinted at reserve teams, but while Manchester United field nine full internationals, Spurs make just three changes from the side that limped past Burnley in the League Cup on Wednesday. Fabio da Silva makes his United debut, while Vedran Corluka, Gareth Bale and Roman Pavlyuchenko replace Jonathan Woodgate, Jamie O'Hara and Jermain Defoe for Tottenham.

Edit: oh, there you go then. Berbatov, Tevez and Wellbeck? Carrick as our most defensive midfielder? Excellent, should be an exciting game.

Why, oh why does Ronaldo still look unfit? Seriously, it's becoming really frustrating to watch him this season. He looks promising for the first 35 minutes of the game and then it seems like the can't muster the energy to run with the ball any more, passing the ball back EVERY single time he gets it. He was injured in the summer, the fact that he had no pre-season is no excuse any more. He looks a shadow of the player he has been for the last 3 seasons, and it's killing me to watch :o

Tell you what, seeing that interview with him before he's a greasy sod. He needs to exfoliate and get a good skincare regime
