The old Man Utd Thread

Our starting eleven have looked a bit tired in the last couple of games though and most of their potential replacements are either not really good enough or don't quite fit into the system we've been playing recently (thinking of Mctominay and Fred here).

I think James could do well today against a team who presumably won't be sitting back too much and he offers a bit of defensive cover but I can't really see any of the front 3 being told their sitting out today.

I think we should be the favourites.

It's not as straightforward as that, though.  The 4-0 was a strange result and the first game for Lampard's new-look Chelsea, including several young players making their debuts.  They're a different prospect now.  The 2-1 I can only really remember Rashford's worldy free-kick.  The 2-0 at Stamford Bridge we were lucky, with three close VAR decisions going in our favour.  You'd probably have to say Chelsea are due a win in the fixture, even.

The main reason I'm pesimistic is that I think we'll rest players, and resting any member of out first eleven seems to massively reduce the effectiveness of the team overall.  Against Palace, we were without Shaw, and rested Matic, and suddely we were comfortably second best against an average Palace team with nothing to play for.  2-0 flattered us there.  I think we'll have to hope Chelsea also rest players and it becomes a battle between two disjointed teams, and that we have a bit of luck.

i still woulda sacked it off and played the 2nd team, especially with that Leicester result! We need to rest the team for the league games, which we really need to win!

But come on... it'll be an Arsenal / United FA Cup final, it's like we really are back in the day :D

I see the BBC are just making shit up then!!

I'm quite confused by this sequence of posts.   None of those players are in the starting line-up?

Anyway, it'll be 3-5-2/5-3-2 today, as I think we've played a few times this season against the top teams.  It tended to work better with Shaw in there as he can shuffle round and make it a 4-4-2 with Williams pushing forward.  Chelsea seem to be playing their strongest team.  Our line-up is incredibly negative, right down to Fred being prefered to Pogba and James to Martial.  We've got a grand total of two players on the pitch that regularly contribute anything attacking to the team.  It's a bit worrying, and I think it's going to be a painful evening.

well, they had  an extra two fucking days to recover! but thats not an advantage according to lampard. Yeah, it is, and it calls into question the "fairness" of the competition!

Bournemouth are basically gone arnt they, bah, i quite like them.

I don't think it's that bad! Pogba, Martial and Greenwood can't play every single game, especially when they are coming every 3 days. They have looked tired in the last couple of games and the results and performances have shown especially compared the the previous games since the return. James, Fred and Williams (plus Mctominay ) are probably the best of our non starting 11 so having them step in gives some important players a much needed rest.  James will definitely have a chance to do some good unless Chelsea just sit back which they won't!

Players hopelessly doing a dummy in the penalty area with no awareness of a team mate behind them when they could have taken a shot, weak foot, unprepared or not is one of the things i hate most in football.

matic

especially in a game you're being outplayed in, and a shot can deflect anywhere, and helps build pressure you can build onto turn the game around.
