The old Man Utd Thread

I still can’t believe we didn’t get Haaland. I always forget how shit Woodward is at sorting transfers during the season, as I get caught up in the rumours, but I always comes crashing back to reality, when he lets another slip through our fingers. I knew it wouldn’t be long before they made Ole come out and say we didn’t want him anyway.

Who do you lot think we’re going to get then, if anyone?

What made you think United were in pole position to sign Haaland in the first place? Was there anything concrete to go off or just paper talk?

Just the fact that we need another striker (Martial just isn’t right for me) and the club had been making noises that we’d definitely be strengthening in January. A lot of stuff I’ve read has been from Ole’s press conferences, so I just put two and two together and threw in a bit of hope. Serves me right for believing their bullshit, yet again.

Why would you think (unless Utd were overpaying which is surely something you’re trying to get away from) that he would go to Utd over Dortmund?

Guaranteed first team action. Him already knowing Ole. His dad playing in the premier league and hopefully telling him what a good move it’d be. Ole’s comments about him knowing which club he was going to choose. Our need of a world class striker meaning we’d be giving him a decent wage. Him being in a young team that’s building for the future. It’s Manchester United. Etc. Etc.

Why would you think he’d go to Dortmund over United?

I’ve not seen any reasons why, but a lot of it seems down to United pulling out because Raiola wanted further payments if we moved him on. I dunno though. I need to try and catch up with it all.

I’m pretty disappointed though to be honest.

It has nothing to do with United does it? Young player who plays in Austrian Bundesliga chooses to sign for second best club in Bundesliga which is renowned as being the best club in the world at developing young talent. When deciding to blame Woodward and United why doesn’t the player have agency here? I really dislike the entitlement that just because United are linked to literally the most wanted young striker in the world that they have the devine right to him. It’s like blaming United for failing to sign De Ligt, even though we know he chose Juventus because he said he has always been fascinated with the Italian way of defending. There are some great players, annoyingly all the ones Man City got who don’t care which club they play for and have no real boyhood dream they want to live out and are just attracted and flattered by a contract offered to them. De Bruyne said the offer to him was just so ridiculous he couldn’t say no.

No outfield player who joins United flourishes. They go backwards, their value plummets, they become targets for fans dismay. Pogba returning was freakish, i still don’t understand it. United are where Liverpool were 7 years ago.

I didn’t think we had a divine right to him. I just thought they would have pulled out all the stops for such a talented player. Whether it was his decision, his agent being a prick or Woodward being useless, it’s still a big disappointment.

That would be the same bloke that effectively had his career ended by a snarling Irishman in a United shirt, no? I'd think that might have been in his mind if he had the choice of signing for United.

It would have been nice to see him play in the Premier League, but it's not as if he's signed for some backwater no-hopers, he'll push on at Dortmund and do really well for himself.

How do you know they didn’t though?

Why include agent being a prick and Woodward being useless as possibilities over his decision? I think it’s disappointing if you ever really thought the most sought after young striker in Europe would choose Man United over every other club at this stage in his career. What is he looking at that might appeal to him? Struggle against shit teams, never be fed the ball because there’s no midfield to provide, waste years then get moaned at for being lazy and not trying hard and not caring then eventually being classed as not good enough by the exact same people who were wishing your arrival?

It plays out the exact same way every time. Like Di Maria, Martial he’d probably show his innate class straight away before the gloom of the club swallows him. Before he arrives he’s the hottest striker around who was a fantastic buy. Give it a few years and he’s not involved enough, he doesn’t track back, and why did we ever think someone who scored loads in the Austrian Bundesliga would be ‘Man United quality’ anyway? Oh yeah he scored in the Champions League but lets reframe that based on the absolutes now being made.

And I thought I was down on how far we’d fallen as a club!

There were good reasons why we would believe we were in with a good chance of signing him. Solskjaer and Woodward went to Austria to have talks with the player. Raiola has said that United were very much in the race to sign him. This clearly wasn't just paper-talk, no matter how many Liverpool fans stop by to question why anyone would want to sign for United.

What might be paper-talk is the reasons why the deal didn't happen. We apparently pulled out of the deal to sign one of the hottest properties in Europe for a cut-price £17m. This is being widely reported, which of course doesn't mean it's true, but supposedly we didn't want to pay a percentage of a future sale to Raiola and Haaland's father. Also, they apparently wanted a release clause, which is a pretty rare thing in the Premier League and it's unclear how enforceable they are anyway.

We're now supposedly going to try to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin, which is pretty uninspiring. I doubt there's much truth in that one anyway.

It's days like this you need John O'Shea to find himself somehow alone with the ball on the edges of the 18 yard box with an onrushing keeper he then chips the ball over to cap a 4-2 win. As someone who has AFTV as part of his entertainment fixture of the week, nothing less than a battering of an Arsenal that always find new ways to collapse will do, and i hope every Man United player before they run on to the pitch reminds themselves of the gloating someone like DT might do if Arsenal win.

an arsenal fan reading this thinking; look at the state of this.

its on bt i get to watch it!

I want Lingard to score and do a moonwalk so badly just for the AFTV meltdown.

I see you edited this! Not even on the bench then. Nice one Pogba.

He's been out for 3 months, he played 45 minutes 2 days ago, we're playing dirty dirty Burnley and we have arsenal in a few days.

Or he's injured again.

Or he's off to sunny Spain next week.
