The old Man Utd Thread

Bit of a crap performance and a crap result though.  This is the sort of game we need to improve in.  I'm not distraught or anything though, it was great to see Greenwood score again, and at least we did fight our way back into the game.

Where we were great was winning the ball back quick - Fred and McTominay were great at that.  Where we were poor was doing anything with the ball.  None of our attackers played well.  Martial and Lingard were peripheral, Rashford erratic, and James had no end product.  A lot of the passing was really sloppy, although Everton deserve credit for the way they pressed tirelessly in packs.  Wan-Bisakka has been one of our best players this season, and his tackling was again amazing today, but he doesn't give us much going forward down the right.  He could learn from someone like Gary Neville, who had no natural ability going forward, but who learned how to make the right run at the right time, and turned himself into a good crosser of the ball.  Shaw on the other side was pretty terrible, apart from one moment when he went on a charge into the box and had a shot.  Perhaps he should do more of that.

I wonder if a proper centre forward is what we need.  It's kind of difficult to know what kind of chances Martial is looking for us to create for him.  We're after this kid Haaland, and he looks the type of player I'm talking about.  I'm not completely convinced by him because he looks clumsy as hell sometimes, but he plays right up there, occupies defenders, and is a fantastic finisher.

I agree with this. I honestly don't think Martial is good enough/has the right attitude/works well in our system. He's another I'd be looking to replace as soon as possible.

It's so frustrating watching them at the moment. It feels like we get on a bit of a good run, but their confidence levels never seem to rise and then, when the opportunity to really close the gap arises, we bottle it.

There are still so many areas that need sorting, but I'm hoping we can get Haaland and a decent midfielder in January. But that's just a start. Next summer will need to be a good one for transfers as well.

It's the lack of options and support for passing in attack that bothers me, every player in the final third is isolated, and you can see the incoherence every time. They dribble but can't decide between left or right, take a heavy touch, get intercepted. They know how to run down the wing and cross it in, every player knows that. I don't know why it's so difficult to move in triangles and give an option every time a player is in possession (so he has two) to enable movement in the final third to be fluid. I guess sticking to formations and positions, tiredness, lack of communication/being on the same wavelength prevents it. Every team has the same problem most of the time.

I want the team to create goals, not snatch at them. All proposals for a striker is just saying steal goals. That's good as well when you can't break down a team, when you are having an off day. But overall i want to see the team play.

Creating a clear cut chance against Everton feels like getting blood out of a stone though. They make for dull games i think. I didn't expect a late winner. I'm not that disappointed because i didn't think the spurs and city win changed anything and expect to struggle against all but the top 6 sides. Which is a weird place to be. It depends on Rashford having the support of Martial and Pogba coming back. 4th is still achievable and would be good.

Pogba coming back

I honestly can't see it happening.

I also don't think Martial supports Rashford very well either. It looks like an attitude problem to me - where he just can't be arsed, but it could be down to lack of quality around him as well.

Happy to be proved wrong on both, but I don't think I will be.

That's not what I'm talking about personally, I think a good centre forward would help the team create. Someone who plays right on the last defender forces the opposition centre backs to mark him and creates space between them and the midfield. More to the point, at this level, the creative players need to know where the goalscorers are likely to be. They need to know that if they hit that ball across the six yard box that the striker will be there to put it in. Martial is too unpredictable. Dan James gets into good crossing positions but always has to take a second to check where his teammates are, and they're usually not in the right place. Lukaku failed to give us this for a number of reasons. He wasn't great at attacking crosses or finding that bit of space in a penalty area. We need a Van Nistelrooy. An insatiable guzzler of goals. Having that will allow us to play better football, I reckon.

I do wonder why Ole has come out and said Haaland has made his mind up about his next club. Surely that’s a hint it’s United. I can’t see him saying that if he’s chosen a different club, as people like me will read too much into it. I guess we’ll find out in January.

Haaland also has Raiola as his "adviser". Expect lots of fun and games before he does confirm where he's going :)

I would guess if we do sign him it'll be with the condition that we loan him back to Salzburg for the rest of the season.
