I’m so relieved. We could really do with getting rid of a couple of defenders now though. 7 in total I think we have? Jones and Bailly would be my call, but can’t get rid of Eric now. I’d rather keep Tuanzebe if we can, he looked good in pre-season.

I reckon by the end of the season Maguire, Lindelof and Tuanzabe will be our first 3 choices. 3 defenders who can actually play the ball out from the back. No more Smalling panicking and passing it sideways to Young.Plus with Maguire the number of goals we seem to concede from corners and set plays should be significant less while the number of goals we score from similar plays will hopefully increase. Can't wait :omg:

If we do stick with the high pressing 4231 we've been playing in every pre season game so far I can see Fred and Perira looking like "new players" rather then having them play as defensive midfielders in a stodgy defensive side like under Mou. They are both pretty high energy players and I'd like to think they would both thrive in a more active and technical side. Those two along with Pogba, Matic and future captain Mctominay and I'd feel pretty confident going in to the season without having replaced Herrera. We also have Garner who might get some game time as well. If we do get Bruno then that's a bonus.

Baily is a strange one. huge confidence player. he's either top of his game or a fucking liability.

I also read this is the last year of his contract if we don't trigger the usual one year extension. Can see him going for a free in the summer.

Excellent! Dybala and Fernandes now before next Thursday. There’s plenty of time!

I’m not massively arsed about Dybala, but I think it’d be good for Pogba. Not that it should matter and he should be professional whoever’s in the team, but I think it’d definitely lift him and keep him with us.

however we're getting old man manduzic. just what we need...

As an alternative to our current pacy strikers who is happy to mostly play from the bench why not? We've missed someone who can header and be a pain in the ass since Fellaini left. Lukaku is no target man.

If the news about Dybala is true, then it's probably quite a positive step for the club. Paying through the nose for a star that doesn't really want to play for us? Sounds like Di Maria all over again. I would take it as a sign that the people at the top of the club are thinking in terms of the long-term health of the sporting side of the "business", rather than simply what will make headlines and fulfil short-term commercial goals.

Mandzukic would be a great option for us. If we sell Lukaku we'd be asking a huge amount of the forwards left at the club, to produce on all fronts all throughout the season. Plus he is a different option to what we have currently - an actual target man. Maybe his ability to harass defenders won't be something we can always rely on with the greater pace of the English league, and him not being on the older side, but I could definitely see him coming on late in games and causing problems.

Let's hope they still want Lukaku

In all seriousness, they might not. Apparently all this selling they're doing was motivated in part by wanting to stay the right side of FFP. If they want to buy they might need to sell first.

Knew that... what’s happening in terms of midfielders?

Something maybe. Or nothing. Depends how Ed feels.

One overpriced transfer deadline deal for Sean Longstaff coming up!

I see this be mentioned a lot in the Woodward bashing, the denying Mourinho a defender thing in his 3rd season. The 'why is Maguire good enough now but he wasn't last season?' thing. (I've been on the guardian this morning)

Mourinho was given £124m in 3 seasons for 4 defensive players. Are we supposing Mourinho had no say in those? Because most managers don't either. Klopp and Pochettino have admitted as much.

Given Mourinho wasn't getting the best out of any of the defenders he brought in and was bullying a young talent that was there before he arrived (Shaw) why would Woodward trust Mourinho with more money?

Mourinho also sold Blind who was adaptable across the back and who i thought was reliable and who seems to be doing well for Ajax, he scored his first senior hat trick whilst playing as a centre back last November and that Champions League run as well.

United have needed a proper right back for years but Dalot was brought in and Mourinho let Tuanzebe and Fosu-Mensah go out on loan again despite them impressing in the few first team games they played in.

It seems more like Bailly got another serious injury and pushed this move. If next season or the one after Solksjaer is still here and throws a tantrum in pre season because he's not being given another £30m+ for a centreback i don't think it'd be unreasonable to point to the amount spent in this window and say it's enough.

If you hire a famously defensive coach, then sign some defenders who apparently can't defend you either need to fire the coach or buy better defenders. Everything good Mourinho has done has come on the back of having great defenders, Phil Jones and Marcus Rojo aren't quite Carvalho, Terry, Ramos...Etc.

Cunningly, they did neither and had to pay a fortune to get rid of him, and have ended up signing the defender anyway. Genius.

Presumably they thought Bailly and Lindelof and Matic could defend though. And i think they can.

...They just choose not to. To maintain the element of surprise.

There have been murmors in the background for a little while about Eriksen coming to us as he's in the last year of his contract and Levy would rather get some money for him instead of letting him go for free. It's started to pick up a bit in the press since yesterday and James Ducker, who has been a pretty reliable source of Utd transfer news this summer has just tweeted about it.

People also think Woodward briefing the press about not wanting Dybala yesterday is to try and get their demands down and that talks are still ongoing.

Plus there is all the weird Bruno will we/won't we thing going on.

We might still sign another player :omg:
