The old Man Utd Thread

Don’t you also think that waiting to sell Pogba and Lukaku before buying anyone else (as has been said in a few gossip articles I’ve read) seems unbelievably stupid? It gives the club who we want to buy anyone from complete knowledge of how much money we have in the transfer kitty and they’ll undoubtedly increase their selling prices. Which then leads to Woodward moaning that all our targets cost too much.

It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest though, with the business acumen of Woodward. It’s like a masterclass in how not to conduct yourself in a transfer window.

If you buy all of the replacements and everyone knows Pogba and Lukaku are going to be sold, why will Madrid and Inter then agree to pay the price that we want? They'll just wait until the end of the window and get them at a massive discount because they know we have to sell them.

What's more likely happening is stuff in the background that isn't reported in the papers. It seems like we know Lukaku will be off to Inter this summer. While the two clubs are trying to sort that out we will have identified replacements and maybe even have agreed offers and contracts pending the Lukaku sale.

Of course it's Woodward so none of that might be what's happening but I don't think you can just read what's in the papers and assume that's all.

Premier League proven right back. 21 years old. English. He also seems to be regarded as one of the best right backs in the league. Potentially our right back for the next 8 or 9 years. He was also our first choice right back. We passed on Meunier to get him.

Plus it means Young won't be our first choice right back any more. Bargain!

I thought the £30m paid for 18 year old Shaw 5 years ago was extreme. Don't know if £50m now for a 21 year old in post Neymar/Dembele/ Coutinho/Walker world is as extreme.

I would like to say something pithy in regards to this cycle of spending, hoping, then discarding. I hope this time we haven't identified players from the Lazy Footballers list of targets, there's obviously a Not Lazy Footballers list out there we're not looking at that everyone else uses.

I can't word it right at all. :(

So... 50mil...for wan basaka... That's fucking madness... Should have signed max arrons, he would have cost half that, and then had him and dalot battle it out for right back!

Statistically, Wan-Bissaka was the best defensive right-back in the league last season. Barely anyone went past him all season.

One thing I keep thinking is, surely someone can get Sanchez playing well again. You don't go from being one of the best attackers in the league, to completely useless in two seasons. He's still a top class footballer, someone just needs to coax it out of him.

You’d like to think so, but he always seems so disinterested when he plays. I still think we should offload him because of his ridiculous wages though. It’s totally broken the club’s structure and they need to address it.

When’s Wan Bissaka getting unveiled anyway. Typical of United to keep dragging it out.

Fernandes and De Ligt next and I’ll be a lot happier going into next season.

3pm probably. He's currently trying to quickly learn how to play the piano for his announcement video.

De Ligt next

Didn't he just agree terms with Juventus but still have PSG trying to persuade him? It'd be a bit unusual nowadays for Man Utd to be getting too involved in that mix.

He had pretty much signed for Barcelona. Then he had pretty much signed for PSG. Now he has pretty much signed for Juventus. His agent is Raiola who is the biggest agent wanker in existence to the point where the likes of Pep and Madrid tend to stay away from his clients because it's just not worth the drama and added hassle that comes with him.

De Ligt may well be off to Juventus but it's also just as likely he'll end up somewhere else instead. Until he is pictured holding up his new clubs shirt I don't think you can really be too sure about anything that gets reported about this saga.

Will we get him? Maybe/probably not, but there is an underlying level of (probably quite misplaced) optimism that we might pull it off.

Hasn't the club officially said we're not in for De Ligt?

I mean of course we're not. He's the kind of quality that would improve our defence massively. Of course we're not going to bother trying to sign him. We'll just flap about trying and failing to sign Sean Longstaff instead.

Actually, does anyone know anything about Longstaff? I watched Newcastle a few times last season and didn't notice him at all. The YouTube compilations I've seen have had to pad out the running time with clips of him hitting shots miles over the bar, getting fouled and committing fouls, and at one point playing a pass that bounced back off the ref. His first touch doesn't look particularly good. Is he a Man Utd player?

One of those Twitter thread things on Longstaff.

Edit. Carrick like but with more mobility. Sign him up! :omg:

He's 18 and has 1 minute of premier League experience. He may well end up being brilliant but I don't think you can just throw him in at the deep end and expect him to swim. I don't know much about Longstaff but if he's been identified and they think he has tons of potential I don't see why we wouldn't sign him up!

The logic around signing him is very similar to Shaw, and that worked out, injury aside. It's good to get someone who's known for being defensively solid first and foremost too, means having Dalot isn't suddenly pointless, gives us options. Of course Wan Bissaka will expand our attacking options anyway, simply by being a natural right back and also not being in his mid thirties.

Fernando Torres cannot score in Japan. Sure he is 35 now but he has been hopeless for ages by his own standards.

Sanchez could just be done. It can happen.

I suspect with Sanchez the problem is miles on the clock. He's been flying back and forth to play for Chile for 13 years. He didn't look great in his last season at Arsenal. He might just be in terminal decline now. There is also the factor that he's apparently a bit of an odd character, and his style of play is all about doing it all himself, making runs and dribbles, taking shots from distance. As his physical powers decline, he's not going to be able to play that way. He seems completely unable to adjust.

He (Rooney) has found his level. Fair do's, the clips you post are great - even Sanchez has had a couple of decent moments in the last year. I'm as happy as anyone for Rooney, but let's remember he's playing in MLS.
