The old Man Utd Thread

Players like Pogba depend on the players around him, though.  Put some real genuine quality alongside him, someone with real intelligence and quality in front of him (someone like Ibrahimovic would be nice) and a solid plan for how to harness his talents and he'll look amazing again.  I'm kind of glad some of you aren't in charge of the team, angrily selling off fifteen players as if it's even remotely possible to replace them in one window!  Sell De Gea because he's made a few mistakes?  Madness.  I don't think you can question his attitude, either.  A few years ago he was a botched fax away from joining the champions of Europe, and what did he do after that fell though?  Got his head down, played better than ever, and repeatedly won our player of the year award.  He's shown more loyalty than we can reasonably expect a player of his ability to show to a basket-case of a club who keep playing Smalling and Jones in front of him.  Step back, stop looking at it from a fan's perspective, and you can see exactly why he might be stalling over a new contract.

I think we need to buy at least one, probably two centre backs.  They need to be genuinely good as well, I'd blow most of the budget on them.  We should compete for De Ligt and get Alderweireld.  We also need a right back, obviously.  I'd be in the market for a proven winner in midfield, an upgrade on the departing Herrera.  God knows who this would be.  Could Sarri be persuaded to sell Kante?  It's not as if he uses him properly.  Another attacking player would be good too, someone with quality and experience.  Oddly, this might be the time to get Bale in.  My departures list would be similar to Liamness, although I'd keep hold of Pogba if possible.

We need to get a solid system, and the players need to be much more determined, much less flakey.  They need some belief.

Jesus, some of you lot are clueless. Let's sell our only world class outfield player because he doesn't bust a gut every game. Pogba definitely needs to produce more against the big teams but he's had a solid season overall. He is great for France because Kante and Matuidi provide the legs in midfield, we, on the other hand, have Matic who is clearly past his best, Fred who hasn't had a single outstanding game all season (what is he meant to be good at?), Herrera who works hard but is positionally suspect and Mctominay who has impressed recently but still has a long way to go before he is in the same league of the French pairing.

The problem is who can we realistically buy to do the dirty work for Pogba? If we don't make the CL then we're going to have a hard time attracting the best players so I would suggest putting faith in the youngsters like Mctominay, Pereira and Tuanzabe.

Honestly, I think we should go all out and get Sandro from Dortmund as he would definitely give us a more balanced attack coming in from the right. He's young and English too.

Finally, if you think we should sell De Gea then you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Who the fuck sells their best player after a couple of mistakes? Madness.

But if he keeps stalling on a new contract then sell him at the end of this season for £££ rather than let him go on a free in summer 2020.

I think unless it's going to be a crazy amount, £50mil or above, De Gea is so good you'd want to keep him for as long as possible. There aren't any replacements that will slot right in and his value to your lot right now is pretty obvious.

He could be the difference if we somehow end up challenging for the top 4 next season.

Worth the risk.

I genuinely don’t know what I want to happen tonight. I’m going to hate the result either way. Either we turn up with dignity and fight and hand the title to you lot, or we continue the shameful performances, get humiliated AND help City win it.

Might just not watch it!

I couldn't give a shit who wins the league between City and Liverpool. We're not in that fight, so I'm not interested. 4th place is of greater concern for me at the moment. Maybe in a few years, once we've rebuilt the squad and we're back, then I'll be interested, but not at the moment.

I want United to win tonight, but I honestly have absolutely no faith in the team after Sunday's pathetic outing. If they can't muster any enthusiasm against Everton with a Champions League spot up for grabs, then why would they put any effort in tonight?

Yes you are, 29 years since Liverpool won the league. You win tonight and you hand them their first premier league title on a silver platter. Your most hated rival throughout the seventies and eighties.

Go and read rawk for ten minutes...

Best outcome would be for Utd to smash City tonight and then Liverpool lose against either Huddersfield (lol) or Newcastle (Rafa lol).

This is great reading! How can you go from "Ole's at the wheel" to.... "I dont understand what he is doing, clueless..." etc in less than a month.

It must be horrible having to decide the fate of which 'rival' wins the league. I didn't know you could be rivals to Liverpool and City as most of those fans live in Manchester and Liverpool. That's a bit far to be their rivals?

Anyway, ignore me I'm having fun reading this.

Interesting to see the team sheet.

We need speed and quick thinking. That means no Lukaku up front. I'd also look to leave Pogba out and go with Herrera and McTominay.

An espn guy has said if the rumours are true then no one would have guessed the starting 11.

Leaky roof instead of leaky defence hopefully.

You know what I mean though. I just don’t care who wins the league because we aren’t up there scrapping for it. My only hope now is we win our last 4 games and one of the other teams around us slips up. Yes, I did just type that!

If we are talking about what I'd rather happened, I'd rather we won tonight, showing some of the fight and desire they were lacking against Everton.  Sod whether it hands the title to Liverpool.  To be honest, the idea of City potentially ending this "quadruple" season with just the Carabou Cup amuses me no end.

Thing is, I don't think what we would "choose" will come into it at all.  We're going to get battered.

Edit - Oh, it's that wingbacks and two up front system again, then.  I don't think that works, personally.  I liked us playing 4-3-3 with three pacey forwards like we did for Ole's first few games.  Or is it?  I've just realised I misread it and we're actually playing three full-backs.  Hmmm.  4-4-2 with Young on the wing or something?  Young or Darmian as a third CB?

I had a dream that Phil Jones scored the winner.

Get your money on. 100/1

He's not in the matchday squad, so I reckon it's a bit unlikely.  I reckon it's still vaguely possible he might somehow still manage to score a game-winning own-goal despite not being on the pitch, but I wouldn't bet tooooo much money on it.
