The old Man Utd Thread

I don't think I've ever watched us get beaten in as humilitating a fashion as that. 4-0 flatters us.

Ole's results initially were good enough that they pretty much had to give him the job permanently. But this single performance, particularly in the context of our recent results, puts his credibility very much under question. I'm not sure they can really continue with him as manager next season. So appointing him permenantly (and presumably calling off the search for a longer-term replacement) feels like yet another decision taken half-cocked by the Glazers / Woodward, only taking the short term in account, and not showing any vision for the direction of the club. Add it to the pile, I guess?

I can understand how pissed off you are, as I’m exactly the same, but I’m not convinced this is down to Ole.

He may lack experience and be naive as a manager, but the players have to take full responsibility as far as I’m concerned.

We’ve seen that they can perform, but over the last month most of them have reverted to their attitude under Mourinho. They are lazy, lack any kind of fight and appear completely entitled. They just don’t look like they want to play. There is no belief in them or pride of the position they are in being able to play for United.

Now, I’ve no idea why that is, because I’m sure they’re getting some of the best coaching in the league, they’ll have some of the best facilities and they’ve got an incredibly privileged lifestyle with the ridiculous amount of money they earn, but something is seriously wrong.

Whatever that is goes back before Ole’s appointment, so I don’t agree that it’s down to him, or he should take the blame for this. What exactly could a different manager do?

It has to be something amongst the players and until that is weeded out and the squad is rebuilt we are going nowhere.

I still stand by what I said earlier, that nobody on the pitch (bar two or three of them) are worthy of playing for us. Whoever is causing the problems, whether it’s one, two or ten of them, need to get shipped out immediately and a new culture needs developing.

We have to stand by the manager through this and hope the club give him the backing he needs to put things right. Whether Ole can do that is obviously open to debate, but it has to start somewhere and I want it to start now. This summer will show how serious the club is about correcting the years of mistakes, so let’s hope they do it.

Get rid of the really big, highly paid players in the summer that aren't putting in the effort and look to the youth squad.

Forget big marquee signings and go with the ones that are coming through and will hopefully guide us to success for the next 6 - 8 years.

I was just looking at the first team and I’d honestly axe 90% of them.

Where has this come from? Put your toys back in the pram pal.

I’m absolutely wound up because of today’s result. I’ve been following United all my life and it’s a subject that is close to my heart. I’d like to discuss it with like-minded people without pathetic trolling of the discussion.

Nothing personal, but now’s not the time.

Tbh if you think 1 neg on a post complaining about getting negged is trolling then you’re a bit weak minded.

You are the one investigating who has negged you then mentioning them in the thread. You want to talk about Man Utd then talk about them and not who has been negging you maybe?

So who would you keep?

I’m just a bit busy at the moment, but I plan on listing them all out in a post. I think it could be a decent discussion of who we all see as being problematic and if we agree.

I'm up for that.

Was just looking at the first team on the Man Utd app and there just looks to be so much to clear out.

Couldn’t resist! There you go. I’m being ruthless. I honestly don’t think the players I’ve marked as Sell are either good enough or their heart isn’t in it. I was on the fence with De Gea as well because of his recent performances and the talk of him stalling on a contract.

Yeah I'm not saying it is either, just saying giving him the job permenantly was another example of the lack of long-term thinking by the people running the club. It may have actually undermined Ole, in a wierd way. Thing is, if we have a big clearout, do we trust the current management of the club to carry that out? The long term aim seems to be to implement a more modern structure where there is a sporting director, but in the meantime there seems to be no vision at the very top of the club, so it could just go deeply wrong again. I think the situation is this:

Definitely going - Rojo, Herrera (unfortunately), Mata, Valencia, Darmian

Might be going - Sanchez (probably depends on whether he wants to earn money sitting on the bench or play - I think his pride will make him want to seek greener pastures), Pogba (for all his abilities, he seems like a uneeded luxury for a team in our position)

Should be going but probably won't - Young, Jones

That's a lot of players leaving. For the sake of squad cohesion, and also being able to say no to clubs who ask for crazy transfer fees, we really probably don't want to bring in more than 3-4 players over the summer. So in the short term, we can probably only fix the obvious problems in the squad - right back, right sided attacker, and a central midfielder. Hopefully it would be a leaner, more balanced squad. Maybe Solsjkaer is the right guy to oversee that?

I do wonder if Mourinho is watching this and feeling somewhat vindicated. Getting 81 points with pretty much this squad seems like quite an achievement in retrospect. Although he kind of fucked himself by signing Sanchez though.

Oh I see you've already started playing this game.

@JPL why not just form another club entirely

@teddymeow Seem TFM play lately? He really doesn't look like making the grade as a top-level footballer. He's barely played for Fulham this season and look where they are, surely if he had kicked on at all they'd be using him. I think I'd like us to get Tuanzebe back though - I remember his performance in midfield for us against Arsenal fondly, and he seems to be doing well at Villa. I'd rather have him on the bench than Jones, put it that way.

Okay, in roughly the format that everyone else is doing:

Spoiler

Red means to sell / release. Orange is to listen to offers. Green is for new players that we will need.

David de Gea

Lee Grant

Sergio Romero

Joel Pereira

Victor Lindelöf

Eric Bailly

Phil Jones

Marcos Rojo

Chris Smalling

Ashley Young

Diogo Dalot
Matteo Darmian

Luke Shaw

Antonio Valencia

Axel Tuanzebe

Tim Fosu-Mensah

Some kind of brilliant right back

Paul Pogba

Fred
Andreas Pereira

Ander Herrera (already off, I'd want him to stay personally)

Juan Mata
Nemanja Matić

Scott McTominay

Central midfield all-rounder

Jesse Lingard

Alexis Sánchez

Romelu Lukaku

Marcus Rashford

Anthony Martial

A forward that will stretch the play on the right

We’re not that far from each other. To be honest, I reckon some of the players I’ve marked to sell could come good with better support around them.

Either way, it’s a massive job that’s going to take multiple season to correct. Let’s just hope the club make a statement of intent this summer now and start rebuilding in earnest.

Yeah, mine are essentially the same as yours. I don’t agree with Ole that we should build a team around Pogba, I think he’s far too inconsistent and a fair weather player. Happy to get rid for the right offer. It’s going to take a long time until we’re back where we want to be to be honest, but we have to start re-building now. No point carrying on.

If we were a bit further down the table I'd go so far as to say that the big players who aren't giving their all be benched and the young up and comers be given a chance.

There's no way that Pogba is the linchpin for the future and the next long-term captain. He just doesn't seem as determined and do-or-die as previous Utd captains.
