The old Man Utd Thread

That was fucking great.

The players seemed to know what they were supposed to be doing. They had licence to play football, be brave in possession, get forward, express themselves, find space wherever it was, even if that meant moving out of position. Even the defending - we kept nicking the ball, something we hadn't been doing under Mourinho because he wanted them to set up in position and wait for the opposition to make a mistake.

As @Gabzy pointed out, Lindelof striding forward and adding another attacking player was fantastic. He's got the technique to do it. What I particularly liked was the one where he came forward, played it off, then continued his run, ending up in the centre forward position. He looked a good player today.

Even Fred. Poor old Fred, who was last seen panicking in possession, not looking up to it. He came on and got involved, looked assured on the ball, and reinjected energy into the team.

It felt like Manchester United again.

Plus Phil Jones got to close to scoring, as well.

Bit better eh?

I must admit I’d been drinking the Jose kool-aid of ‘these guys aren’t good enough’ when they clearly are, but need a bit of man-management. I think it served to prove that whilst Jose’s tactics may appear to be antiquated, I think with the right type of player they are very effective. This lot aren’t really built for that type of cautious football.

Everyone was getting forward and it was refreshing to see a proper United performance for once. Transitions were quicker, passing was quicker, I actually think we defended better from the front too and didn’t really offer too much to Cardiff in terms of opportunities.

Yes, it was Cardiff, but quite honestly with the shit football we’ve been subjected to over the last few years, I’ll take that performance over any opposition.

Ouch!

I know we are only Cardiff, but only your neighbours have taken us apart like that this season (not just in goals, but where we've not been remotely in the game).

I worried we could get a beating and that very very early goal was a disaster. Fair play - the third goal was very impressive.

Make sure you do the same to anyone else in the bottom half!

I enjoyed the initial United collapse after Fergie left but eventually missed them being a quality team. With Ole at the helm it was a pleasure to watch them today. As fun it was in the short term, top level football without United just doesn't feel right.

There have been many false dawns and all three post-Sir Alex managers had a honeymoon period but this feels different. Mourinho and LVG were brought in to win no matter how tedious the football inevitably was. Even if Ole isn’t the long term solution, the past week felt like a club rebooting.

It's crazy what a little bit of confidence and belief can do, isn't it. Actual runners in front of the man on the ball, passing into tight spaces with quick combinations, revolutionary stuff. A lot of the key moments that led to goals are things that under Mourinho we usually wouldn't bother trying until we're 2-0 down. I think there's a decent chance we'll see many more performances like that this season, as long as the players continue to be instructed to take risks and make things happen. It just suits the players we have much more.

I know the players probably felt a lot of relief with Mourinho gone and it’s too soon to judge after just one game, but I think it goes to show just how much he was stifling the players abilities. I can only assume he was purposely being so negative for his own personal gains. It makes me wonder who would be crazy enough to employ him now though. I wouldn’t want him anywhere near another club, after seeing how destructive and self-serving his attitude can be. He really shouldn’t be in management and should take the full responsibility of the mess he created. What a horrible person.

I hope we can continue to keep this freedom of expression up and the players gain a new level of confidence. It was a great start to Ole’s tenure and exactly what we needed. Good stuff.
